Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: garymuchow on 02-07-2009

Each year the promise of spring was confirmed as the first keg of Schell's Bock rolled onto waiting delivery wagons. And since 1860, Schell's Bock has continued in the true German tradition. Completely reformulated for 2009, Schell's Bock has replaced Caramel Bock as our late winter seasonal. Brewed with a harmonious blend of 10 different types of malt and noble hops, Schell's Bock is fermented slowly, and then lagered for an extended period of time to ensure a smooth finish. Perfect for passing even the coldest winter day.

This dark amber colored beer sports a robust malt character.

Yes!

Appearance : caramel colored, candy-like. Head is frothy and full, leaving lacing on the glass.

Aroma : butterscotch, caramel warm pretzel - reminds me of the warm pretzel shops with sweet pretzels; roasted caramel malts, sugar plum, faint hop. This smell is terrific!

Flavor : tasty beer, malt forward with hops coming in towards the finish. Caramel barley malt, plum, burnt orange peel, banana. Easy drinking.

Mouthfeel : creamy, medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Ends nippy and slightly dry.

Overall : sign me up for more, this Bock rocks!

From a single into an imperial pint

A: deep dark glowering garnet with a 2 finger puffy beige head that sticks around for a a couple minutes
S: sweet caramel, lots of toasted grain, yeast, dark fruit
T: like the nose, but even more pronounced and developed. Layers of malt, fairly sweet and very toasty, but not at all cloying. A tinge of herbal spicy hoppiness in the back half that provides an edge to the malty savoriness. A little iron in the water?
M: medium body and carbonation, creamy but lively, slightly warming.

Overall: Excellent. I think this is Schell's best offering (except for the sadly departed Emerald Rye). There aren't a lot of quality American bocks that I have access to, but this will do nicely. I look forward to it every year as much as I look forward to just about any other beer.

Pours a brilliantly-clear, golden-brown in color, and topped with a pale tan head, which recedes at an average pace, leaving behind some sparse Brussels lace.

Nose is one of a lighter, malty complexion, and a very neutral profile all-around. No yeast or hops, just a lightly-sweet, somewhat dry malt character to it. Clean and unassuming, but with a subtle richness.

Sweet and lightly tangy on the first sip, this one also coats the tongue and palate rather well with an almost viscous sweet, malty character. Finish is dry, but with a lingering roasted malt character. Biscuit malt character, too? Yep... it's in there. There is a hint of a very deep sweetness, but it never gets to the point where it's cloying. There's a very light cheese or dairy-like character to it which is hard to describe.

Easy drinking and seemingly lighter in body, it's also pretty full in the mouthfeel at the same time. Well-balanced, and neither cloying nor too light.

Not too strong, but sort-of an all day sipper.

Aroma came across as mildly stale. Initial taste had a really nice bock flavoring
(the right balance of malts and very low hop bitterness). Some "irony" taste evident that
eventually dissipated. Nice copper color and a good foam head. Very smooth and easy
drinking bock. This was definitely much better than I was expecting.

Sampling right now on 7/7/14. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a tulip glass.

Pours a deep amber in color with a good finger of a off-white head that settles back down to just along the sides of the glass. Some spotty lacing is seen. The aroma is of sweet malts and caramel for the most part. The taste has even more going on with the sweet & caramel malts coming together nicely with a hint of spice. Goes down very easy with no bitter or harsh aftertaste at all. Perfect carbonation. A great brew!
