Notes/Commercial Description:
Each year the promise of spring was confirmed as the first keg of Schell's Bock rolled onto waiting delivery wagons. And since 1860, Schell's Bock has continued in the true German tradition. Completely reformulated for 2009, Schell's Bock has replaced Caramel Bock as our late winter seasonal. Brewed with a harmonious blend of 10 different types of malt and noble hops, Schell's Bock is fermented slowly, and then lagered for an extended period of time to ensure a smooth finish. Perfect for passing even the coldest winter day.

This dark amber colored beer sports a robust malt character.

Went over the cheddar curtain hunting for Maibocks, found Schell's previous seasonal in abundance and since I'd never given it a try, here goes.

Since finding some of the better Bocks from micros and imports I haven't been a big fan of the old-fashioned, American rendition that used to come out every spring season (Anchor's Bock and New Glarus' Uff da are good examples these days), here's hoping this isn't one of them.

A -- Pours a beautifully clear, deep amber or light chestnut color with a firm, creamy, light tan head that holds up well. Reminiscent of Optimator or Salvator.

S -- Smooth, bready to yeasty, dark bread crust nose. There are some light, dark fruit esters back. Bread crust character becomes more prominent with warming.

T -- Toasty, bready malts with the lightest earthiness and dark fruit back. Finish has some mild bitterness but, sweet bready malts finish the mouthful. Dry, hop-bitter character in the aftertaste.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft to mildly syrupy with a mild dryness and the body is medium-full.

O -- Schell pretty much nails the style with this beer. No roastiness or overly-bitter hopping, just rich Munich and/or Vienna malts. The only thing that stops me from all 5s might be the bitter-dry character in the aftertaste. This keeps the beer from being as clean as it might be, and a better lager -- but if you're looking for a good example of the Traditional Bock style, this beer won't disappoint.

Pours a HUGE, dense and soapy, tan-hued head that has impressive persistence and laces readily. Sweet malt aroma with a slightly spicy hoppiness. Crystal clear burnt umber. Sweet malt, toasted malt, warming booze, and a faint hoppiness in the background. Moves into a low-medium hoppiness, gets a little spicy, even. Then the finish is toasted malt and faint biscuit.

This is pretty nice, it's very toasted-malt-forward, and I like that. Slight hop spice, and not too sweet. And, of course, it has that velvety smooth German lager mouthfeel.

Medium sized foamy light tan head settles to a nice lacing above a clear caramelized reddish brown colored beer.

Light caramel grain malts aroma that brings with it some sweetness.

A light sweetness on a roasted caramel malts taste.

Just a bit of dryness associated with a light caramel aftertaste on this lighter bodied Bock.

A decent tasting Bock, maybe just a tad on the wettish lighter feel, but definitely worth drinking.
