Pours a darker amber color, almost copper. A huge, light tan head is produced. Chunky and thick, it has decent staying power and leaves tons of lacing. No visible carbonation in this clear brew.

Whoa baby! This one is surprisingly hoppy! I mean I should have expected it considering it's called "HOPfenmalz," but it's Schell's, not exactly known for their hoppy lagers.

It has a nice floral hop character to it, balanced nicely with a sweet malt backbone. Grassy and slightly piney hops dominate from start to finish. As it warms, the biscuity malts come out more and more.

The taste kind of takes a stop back. Maybe it was too much too quick? Very subtle hops and malts, typical lager subtleties. As it warms, a nice bitterness comes out. Very enjoyable, but not as much flavor as I was hoping.

Smooth with a nice bitter bite. Goes down easy. This is a very drinkable brew.

Overall, I'm VERY impressed with this coming out of Schell's. Who would have thought that Schell's could pull this off? Not really known for being masters of the hops, this one turned out great. I just might have to go get more, as this single surely won't appease my thirst.

Clear, amber-colored beer topped by a healthy white head. Lacing is excellent and head retention holds up very good.

Clean aromas are first of pilsner malts and sweet grains, followed then by earthy and lightly citrus hops.

Tastes fairly hoppy -- much more then I've experienced in other Schell's brews. The hops are both citrusy and earthy, as noted in the nose. The malt component is light and takes a backseat in this one. I also get a bit of unpleasant vegetable flavors.

Mouthfeel is crisp with a moderate amount of carbonation and a medium body. The finish is dry and primarily of bittering hops.

Overall a good beer; it reminds me of a hop-forward Oktoberfest lager. My preference would be for this to have more balance towards the malt end, but I understand that's not what the brewer intended.

Thanks to fLax for this one!

This one grew on me a bit. At first it seemed a bit too earthy and soil toned. But that changed into a bit of an inky thing with a mature fruit tone with an interesting sweetness. Nicely drinkable, though a bit too musty and heavy for a regular rotation beer for me.
