Pours out a clear mahogany color with two fingers of frothy latte-colored head that lasts for several minutes, but only leaves minimal lacing behind. Light yet rich and flavorful body. Higher side of medium carbonation levels.

Smells a bit like a cross between pumpernickel, challah, and banana bread with a touch of chocolate and saaz spicing sting. They weren't kidding when they advertised it as bready. Dark rustic yeasty bread is also dominant on the palate. Basically, it plays out exactly like how you'd expect an imaginary cross between a czech pils and a dunkel to be. Bread, yeast, saaz spice, in a solid clean crisp combo.

Very good beer, worth trying.

The beer's flavor profiles seems complex to me. Tastes include banana at first sip, Noble hops in the mid range and smoke at the end, yet a crisp finish. There's not much left on the palate.

The head was one inch thick in a pilsner glass and the lacing lasted for as long as it took me to drink the full beer, which wan't very long.

Color is a beautiful dark ruby red in the light.

The smell is very malty, yet the hops deceptively balance this beer.

Overall, a very fine brew. I didn't think the Stag series would be OK after the Burton Ale, but this is a worthy follow-up.

Good for Schell's!

August Schell Stag Series Czech-style Dark Lager does indeed pour a dark dark brew (actually a very nice clear dark rose color up to the light) with a big pillowy head. Carbonation is quite active though not spritzy, and all those bubbles bring up a clean nose- chiefly toasty barley malt and a note of lager yeast funk. Up front, the flavor is similarly straightforward- clean roastey-toasty malt with notes of bakers chocolate, followed up with a bright and crackling (though not overpowering) herbal hop off the back. Mouthfeel is light and dry- though the brew is dark, there's nothing oppressive or weighty about it- just about perfect now that it's summer again.

Dark brown with a one finger beige head with good retention and lacing. The aroma has sweet caramel malt, dark bread, and Saaz hops.

The flavor has caramel malt, dark bread, Saaz hops, and a little bit of smoke. There is some sweetness which is balanced by the hops.

Medium bodied with average carbonation. Has a slightly sweet light smoke aftertaste. Another nice beer from the Stag Series.

August Schell Stag Series Limited Release Batch#5: Czech-style Dark Lager.

"Modelled after the famous dark lagers of Bohemia, our version features dark bread and caramel notes that are accentuated by a decoction mash and balanced by the spicy Saaz hops."

Largely opaque, dark brown coloration, nearly tan/light brown, dotted, lace-leaving head. Looks nice.

Aromatics: sweet caramel malt hits the nose first. Next up, notes of vanilla, cocoa, and dark fruit.

Taste: all that comes together at the tip of the tongue, and floods to the back, before a generous brace of bitterness hits. Hops and malt in equal play in the mouth. Medium-bodied, yet fully-flavored. Sweet malt continues to met and matched by a fine layer of hop bitterness.

Very toasty and a little spicy, like a reuben on rye. I like this more and more as I drink it. Another successful stag entry.

A: Dark reddish brown with a 2-inch and steady light brown head; okay lacing

S: A bit subdued but a pleasant grainy, musty, grassy quality does peak through as well as some faint citrus and herbal hops

T: More roasty chocolate malts on the flavors--the chocolate plays well off the grassy grains; this is bready and pretty true to style

F: Decent medium body, especially for a lager--crisp and yet creamy

O: This is a nice beer and like I said true to style; I could drink a few of these in the late spring/early summer--quite refreshing

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown that is near black. Lots of rising bubbles. Big five finger creamy off white head with good retention. Leaves lots of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A malt driven aroma that is very toasty and roasty. Dark roasted malts with hints of caramel, toffee, and chocolate. Wheat grains and a dry biscuit smell. Some subtle hints of dark fruit plum and cherry. Also some moderately spicy European hops.

Taste: A dark and roasty taste that is more dry than sweet. Roasted malts with notes of caramel, chocolate, and toffee. Wheat grains, bready biscuit, and cracker. Midway come some subtle hints of dark fruit including cherry, raisin, and plum. Finishes with some Czech Saaz hops. Pretty nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very creamy, smooth and slick. Finishes pretty dry.

Overall: A very good version of a Czech lager. Nice and toasty with some dark fruit and a good balancing dryness.

Asuming tis a freshness dating

A= Pours a nice dark black color with an off white thick finger and a half head that falls somewhat fast but leaves great lacing.

S= Smells typical Schells. Sort of poopy and a bit of unfermented malt. Really sort of one dimensional with a poopy sweet smell.

T= The taste luckily goes beyond poop and sweet malt. It has a nice roast character to it with a crisp clean finish. I actually am a bit refreshed by the clean finish. There is still a bit of the poop in the flavor but it's not over the top. A sweet caramel flavor follows and leaves a great finish.

M= Nicely carbonated and keeps you coming back for more.

O= Schells did a pretty nice job with this. Not everything needs to be a lager however. This is good but I feel like a little ale yeast would make a difference and make this brewery go far. They do what they do however and you can't deny a fishing trip with schells is great.
