Notes/Commercial Description:
Schell's Goosetown is our interpretation of a traditional, German-style Gose. The beer pours clear, golden orange in color, with a thick white foam head. It has a bright lemon zest and coriander aroma with a slight saltiness reminiscent of a cool ocean breeze. A refreshingly light and citrusy tartness greets your palate, backed by a bready, wheat malt character and a touch of coriander spice. Lighter bodied, yet full flavored with a lively carbonation that gives the beer a crisp, dry finish. A uniquely refreshing session beer, perfectly suited for a warm summer day from the August Schell Brewing Company.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

A: Light golden, appeared just slightly less carbonated than a typical AAL.

S: Saltwater, faint wheat and fruitiness

T: To me, this mostly just tastes of a lager (albeit a decent one) with a dash of salt. There is a slight, subtle fruitiness if I really search for it but I'm not getting any coriander.

M: Light bodied, some carbonation. The salt is drying.

This is my first gose, so I don't really have anything to compare it to. The predominant characteristic about this beer is it's saltiness. Very drinkable, nothing unpleasant or offensive about this one, but nothing particularly interesting, either. Goes down very refreshing, but left my mouth really dry--I had to drink a full glass of water afterwards.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Weizen glass.

Appearance: Light, surprisingly clear gold with thin white head.

Smell: Lemon, wheat, salt and coriander.

Taste: Nice mix of citrus (mostly lemon) and wheat forms the core of this beer. The finish has salt and coriander, with a heavier emphasis on salt.

Feel: Light to medium body with moderately high carbonation. Crisp, semi-dry finish.

Overall: Refreshing as hell. Not as much complexity as hoped for, but better than the typical American Wheat style. This would be easy to consume all day with no complaints.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass. Bottle code of 082413.

Appearance: Pours a bright and crisp looking golden orange with a lot of fast rising bubbles. Huge five finger white head with good retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing.

Smell: A wheat and malt driven aroma with nice scents of citrus and spice. Wheat grains and pale malts with hints of biscuit, cracker, straw, caramel, and yeast. Solid hints of coriander spice. Citrus fruit hints of orange and lemon zest. Subtle mineral like hints from the salt. Light hint of earthy and grassy hops in the background. A solid wheat driven aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints, a wheat grain driven aroma with some citrus and spices. Bready pale malts with notes of wheat, cereal grains, biscuit, straw, cracker, yeast, and a slight caramel note. Zesty taste of coriander spice. Citrus fruit notes of orange, lemon zest, and some peach. Notes of the salt come through in the back end. Also some light notes of earthy grassy hops. A pretty nice light wheat taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Very crisp and clean. Very smooth and finishes dry.

Overall:A pretty nice warm weather wheat driven beer. Nice notes of coriander and citrus.

Poured from a brown longneck 12 oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color with a foamy white head that fades quickly but leaves a little sticky lacing behind. Nothing to special about the appearance.

Smell: Malt, spices and some light hops. Very minimal aroma.

Taste: An interesting flavor of lemony citrus with a slight salty finish. Tastes better when it is very cold, as the salt gets more prominent as the beer warms. Otherwise just a malty amber style beer with a lot of malt. The lemony citrus flavor is a nice touch. Not a fan of the saltiness.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Not a style I like very much, but I appreciate the effort to bring a style like this to the masses. I would like to try it on tap or from a cask to see if it changes the flavor profile a little.

Light golden color with two fingers of head that had good retention before settling to a thin cap. Some lacing is left down the glass.

I smell mostly wheat malt. A little grass and citrus but overall a rather timid aroma.

If I did not know better, I would say this is a plain pale wheat ale. Not getting much coriander, tartness, or esters. There is some salt in the finish which is pleasant and gives this beer a unique, refreshing element.

A light beer body. Nice carbonation that makes this beer really easy to consume.

Sure was not as special as I was hoping. Offers clean wheat flavor but I wanted more uniqueness of a gose.

Bright gold with plentiful trails of carbonation visible. Fluffy dollop of white foam on top that forms a convex dome above the rim of the glass, and slowly settles, leaving behind a halo of intricate lacing around the rim. Lasting coverage on the surface with a floating mass of larger bubbles in the center.

Aroma is pleasant but vague, light yeast and coriander essence that is barely there, but overall it conveys a general sense of freshness.

Taste is crisp and clean, not especially tart, only slightly astringent, with some lingering notes of lemon zest, coriander, and wheat. Finishes dry and clean. Body is light, there's a supple feel from the salt addition, but it's not present in the taste. This is a refreshing and simple beer, restrained but still uniquely flavorful.

Not a bad Gose, for me it comes in behind Leipziger, Moonlight, and Off Color Troublesome, but it's a solid intro to the style.
