Notes/Commercial Description:
Schell's Goosetown is our interpretation of a traditional, German-style Gose. The beer pours clear, golden orange in color, with a thick white foam head. It has a bright lemon zest and coriander aroma with a slight saltiness reminiscent of a cool ocean breeze. A refreshingly light and citrusy tartness greets your palate, backed by a bready, wheat malt character and a touch of coriander spice. Lighter bodied, yet full flavored with a lively carbonation that gives the beer a crisp, dry finish. A uniquely refreshing session beer, perfectly suited for a warm summer day from the August Schell Brewing Company.

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass.

A very dark brown bronze body color, with some clarity, and lots of pinhead rising bubbles. Head is a fluffy top, if a bit sunken like and adjunct, and a complimenting simple two finger white head. Some good staying power, but this is really dark for a gose it seems, but a solid looking beer.

Aroma seems to not be doing much. Very subtle nose, and a sense of sweet caramel. Some faint lemon a bit, not too much brine going on. Otherwise kind of neutral and small.

Palate comes fairliy easily. Lots of malt driven sweetness on this. Mild brown sugar sweetness and a nice sweet coating that isn't too thick. Some slight mix of toast and soft aromas, and a good surprising mix of toffee and caramel. Minimal tart and hint of lemon on this as well, with a good decent feel.

It's a very tasty brew, but it reminds me nothing of a gose whatsoever. It's actually a very decent sweet malted brew, with a refreshing body, but has none of the lemon, brine, or wheaty chew I look for in this style. But it is a beer I could easily drink again. Very hard to score this one, as it doesn't really fit the style, but is a decent drinkable beer.

Full disclosure: I have only read style descriptions of this style and have never been driven to try a Gose. But this was a generous gift from friends and I feel obligated to give it a try.

A -- Pours a clear, deep golden color with a sudsy white head that settles slowly and I can actually hear bubbling down at arm's length.

S -- Light bready malts up front with some mild, somewhat sour citrus back and hints of DMS.

T -- Nice breadiness up front that blends into a mild coriander flavor with wheat malt and an odd touch of bubblegum in the backbone. Finish is tart and a little astringent.

M -- The mouthfeel is soft and spritzy to dry with a light-medium body. The finish becomes astringent as the drink goes down, but doesn't stunt the palate.

O -- Not as close to its Belgian cousin, Gueuze, as I expected and a rather pleasant drinker. I can see this being a very enjoyable quencher on a hot summer day.

Final round of the sampler six pack I got for my birthday from one of my good friends. Shout out to Jamie (if you even read these things :-))

Schell is a good brewer and this is a good opportunity to find out what styles I am really into. Lets see how the Gose does on my palate.

Appearance - pours a beautiful, beautiful head that lingers around. Color is golden peach-honey and appears medium bodied.

Smell - Fresh, fruity floral hop aroma. Fresh Baked sourdough bread. Biscuity malts. Little bit of penny. Wheat.

Taste - down the hatch... Wow. Surprisingly smooth and tasty. (I'm still trying to wash the Pilsner 30th off my palate which was a total crapfest.) Coriander and salt is what it says on the bottle, which makes sense. A low hop bitterness that comes quickly and leaves politely and right on time with a watery orange blossom floral flavor replacing it. Nice character. Great flavor. Kinda like pineapple juice. Tastes like everything you dream of.

Mouthfeel - pleasantly carbonated but not overly so. Smooth and articulate. I enjoy this, very much.

Overall - a fantastic beer with lots of happy flavor and beautiful notes and appearance. The Goosetown Gose is one of the most refreshing yet tasty beers that has ever graced my tongue. A Winner, absolutely.
