APPEARANCE: A hard pour into a Left Hand Spiegelau Stout glass provided the prettiest stout I've ever seen. A double cascading action took place in both the upper and lower parts of the glass. A full finger of rough, but creamy head finally rested on top of a black beer. Some light brown light was able to sneak through at the bottom of the glass. The lacing is very pretty and "nitro-like", but more amazingly, while the head faded a little bit, it never fully went away and even got somewhat rejuvenated towards the end of the glass.

SMELL: A wonderful chocolate aroma wafts to the nose right off the bat and with a few more sniffs a little roasty malt/coffee comes through.

TASTE: Chocolate is once again the dominant force here and that hint of coffee from the nose comes through as well. In addition a little caramel and vanilla help to round it out as the subtle cherry and dark fruits accentuate it.

MOUTHFEEL: This is a very rich and creamy beer. There is a little sparkle that cleanses the palate a bit with each sip, but it still all goes down very smooth. For an RIS this is not as big bodied...it almost borders on medium. Mostly sweet, but with a nice, dryer bitterness on the back end.

OVERALL: I'm sure that the glassware added quite a bit to this beer, particularly in the appearance and aroma departments, but hey, it's Left Hand's glass and this is the perfect beer for it. I've always enjoyed WUD, but the nitro experience works wonderfully with it and the glassware only accentuates this beer's beauty. (1,529 characters)

12oz bottle poured hard into pint glass.

Appearance: like with the BA Old Rasputin, this has that really cool effect with the tan head, with small bubbles near the black beer and big ones near the top. As the head dies down, there is some lacing along the side. Plenty of bubbles just hanging out on the side of the glass.

Smell: A little bit of chocolate, a little bit of sweetness. Not close to overpowering.

Taste: sweet, more like a milk stout. Some chocolate notes. For something that's over 10%, there's no alcohol taste to note.

Mouthfeel: a little sticky, thicker, full bodied.

Overall: pretty good for sure. Wasn't sure what to expect from this given the wide ranging reviews here. Glad I tried it. (712 characters)

Serving glass: Poured forcefully from nitro bottle into Nonic Pint.

Appearance: Jet black with lovely, tan, nitro head.

Smell: Dark fruits, molasses, chocolate and light coffee. Good aroma for a nitro beer.

Taste: Nice mix of dark fruits (such as figs), molasses, licorice, chocolate and coffee. The hops are kept to a minimum, but there is a slight bite on the finish from the roasted malts.

Feel: Silky and smooth without the standard carbonated feel. Lighter than most Imperial Stouts, but still some heft. Basically, it feels like a nitro beer.

Overall: Extremely impressive that Left Hand is able to make a Nitro Imperial Stout in a bottle. Really good stuff. I would love it if other brewers did this. Nitro Yeti? Nitro Ten Fidy? Nitro Expedition? Yes, please. (772 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours jet black with a lot of rising carbonation. About one finger of tan head that settles into a thinner creamy layer.

Smell: A roasty and sweet dark malt forward aroma with big hints of chocolate and subtle dark fruit. Dark roasted barley malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, biscuit, smoke, and yeast. Sweet hints of molasses and cream. Dark fruit hints of plum, cherry, raisin, fig, and prune. Also some hints of black licorice. A pretty solid aroma that is on the sweeter side for the style.

Taste: Like the aroma hints at, a sweet and roasty dark malt driven taste with creamy notes of chocolate and dark fruit. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, smoke, and yeast. Sweet notes of molasses, vanilla, and cream. Big dark fruit presence with notes of plum, raisin, prune, cherry, and fig. Anise notes of black licorice. A very solid sweet taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a pretty high level of carbonation from the nitro. Very creamy, silky, and smooth with minimal alcohol heat.

Overall: A very good twist on an Imperial Stout. Nice sweet chocolate and fruit flavors. The nitro adds some nice creaminess without taking too much bite away from the taste. On the sweeter side of Imperial Stouts but it works nice here. (1,350 characters)

Poured into snifter; black with a slowly rising head of classic nitro bubbles that create a minimal half-finger head the color of irish cream that sticks around.
Smells of dark roasted malt, chocolate and coffee, with slight hints of dark fruit and sweetness.
Taste is so smooth thanks to the nitro...it's like dark chocolate espresso, with hints of dark fruit and vanilla. Glorious.
Mouthfeel is wet, full and smooth thanks to the nitro. Works really well with the flavors.
Overall, I really enjoy the nitro version of this beer. I don't remember much about the regular version, or if I've even had it, but this one is awesome. It's an imperial stout that drinks like a milk stout, but isn't cloying. (705 characters)
