Hard pour into a Samuel Smith pub glass. Tight bubbles merge into an off-white head. Beautiful nitro pour. Pitch black in appearance. Deep roast aroma.
Rich and powerful, yet smooth enough to sip away, this is a really flavorful imperial stout. Deep roasted malts, dark chocolate and intense caramel notes dominate. The nitro gives the mouthfeel elegance and the mouthfeel, in part, is what makes this a winner. Chewy and creamy with a bit of toffee stickiness that stays around on the palate. A touch of earth in the finish. Full-bodied. No joke.
One of my all-time favorite styles and this is definitely a good one. It's a bit cool out, and this tastes really good as my night cap.

Poured into a nonic pint from a 12 ounce nitro bottle.
A- Beautiful cascading results from the aggressive pour. A thick, milkshake-like head forms and retains itself well. The body is pitch black. 4.5
S- There's lots of booze on the nose, but also a strong aroma of oatmeal, vanilla and toffee and hints of chocolate. There's some barrel aroma there too. 4.25
T- Barrel flavor continues, as does the booze, but the vanilla and toffee do too. Dark chocolate adds another layer of flavor. 3.75
M- Smooth and creamy for the most part, the booze level undoes some of this beer's greatness. 3.75
O- Many great qualities shine here, but the booziness is a bit hard to ignore. This is a good beer, really good, but only could get to excellent with age that apparently won't work due to the nitrogen. 4

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Note that it's called "Nitro" but there's no nitro widget in the bottle.
Appearance: totally black, permitting no light through; head is a thin finger of creamy tan foam. I like it.
Smell: a big, creamy, toffee aroma which I really like. There's an astringent quality as well, but I am OK with the sweeter elements this big bad candy brew.
Taste: sweet, with a toffee and caramel character mixed with a bit of ashy roastiness. The astringency of the aroma is stronger in the flavor, which for me is a misstep, but overall it's not bad. Hops are green and vegetal and bitterness is moderate for the sweetness.
Mouthfeel: big body with a silky-smooth creaminess.
Overall: not a bad Russian imperial stout, but it lacks some of the flavor complexity that I favor in the style.
