Pours an effervescent mahogany with a pinky of mocha colored head. Viscious look, alright lacing & head retention

S: Near zero nose, one of the biggest draw backs of nitro. A little dark fruit& booze sneaks in

Dark chocolate, dates & a touch of licorice up front. Booze & a bit of vanilla as this warms, some caramel & some more dates & charred grain. Finishes boozey, with dark fruit & a bit of charred grain with much dryness

MF: Medium bodied, smooth carbonation

Drinks better than the unleaded version, but not one I would buy again. Too many other good ones out there

Poured into a nonic pint from a 12 ounce nitro bottle.

A- Beautiful cascading results from the aggressive pour. A thick, milkshake-like head forms and retains itself well. The body is pitch black. 4.5

S- There's lots of booze on the nose, but also a strong aroma of oatmeal, vanilla and toffee and hints of chocolate. There's some barrel aroma there too. 4.25

T- Barrel flavor continues, as does the booze, but the vanilla and toffee do too. Dark chocolate adds another layer of flavor. 3.75

M- Smooth and creamy for the most part, the booze level undoes some of this beer's greatness. 3.75

O- Many great qualities shine here, but the booziness is a bit hard to ignore. This is a good beer, really good, but only could get to excellent with age that apparently won't work due to the nitrogen. 4

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Note that it's called "Nitro" but there's no nitro widget in the bottle.

Appearance: totally black, permitting no light through; head is a thin finger of creamy tan foam. I like it.

Smell: a big, creamy, toffee aroma which I really like. There's an astringent quality as well, but I am OK with the sweeter elements this big bad candy brew.

Taste: sweet, with a toffee and caramel character mixed with a bit of ashy roastiness. The astringency of the aroma is stronger in the flavor, which for me is a misstep, but overall it's not bad. Hops are green and vegetal and bitterness is moderate for the sweetness.

Mouthfeel: big body with a silky-smooth creaminess.

Overall: not a bad Russian imperial stout, but it lacks some of the flavor complexity that I favor in the style.

A- Poured mega aggressively to create a beautiful surge and settle effect. The blackest of all possible blacks in the glass. The head is almost exactly like heavy cream floating on top. Even the trailing looks like cream mixing with coffee. Lacing is incredible as well. This gets the 5.

S- Smells really nice, especially as it warms. Coffee, caramel, dark fruits, chocolate, and a hint of earthy/spicy hop in the back. I want to say the fruits remind me mostly of plum and wild grapes, but it's hit me as cherry a couple of times as well.

T- Dark chocolate, coffee, roast, caramel, and dark fruits hit first. A big, rich dark chocolate emerges from there, fading into nice char and roasted malts on the finish. Aftertaste is roasty with a little baker's chocolate mixed in.

M- Its definitely different. Almost the texture and weight of water on the tongue. Mainly just smooth with no fizz whatsoever in the beginning. At first I was pumped, but the more I drank, the more I missed the bite of carbonation.

O- This was fun. It was a quality RIS in aroma and taste, and the nitrogen definitely threw in some nice curve balls in the appearance and feel. I don't know that I would buy this one again, simply due to the watery mouthfeel, but I'll definitely be trying the original, and carbonated, Wake Up Dead as soon as I can.
