On-tap at 3 Cellars in Franklin, WI:

Pours very dark brown with a lasting thin head. Tan lacing sticks.

The smell is soft - roast is ahead of the soft banana/clove.

The taste is of sweet overripe bananas with roasted coffee. Dry, roasty finish.

It has a smooth, creamy body.

It is a dark American wheat that leans towards a Munich Dunkelweiss. A bit too roasty, in that it somewhat masks the other flavors. Still, it's a pretty good dark wheat.

Revisiting one of the most classic of styles, Left Hand's Dunkelweiss does a lot in short order. It carries a range of complex flavors and does so with supreme drinkability.

Its murky brown color captures a glow of auburn from time to time and gives the beer a rather rusty appearance. As its creamy bone-white head rises to top the glass, it easily endures half the session before collapsing back into the beer. Leaving light trails of lace behind, the dark ale seems to be an ugly duckling. But aren't all German Dunkels?

Its understated complexity starts in the nose where spicy cloves are balanced with light banana, lemon and malt. Seemingly of toast, nuts, light chocolate, light coffee and dough, its malty scent easily supports the elements of fruit and spice. Hints of white pepper, vanilla and mint are all noticeable heading into taste.

Its malty-sweet side hosts all those toasty, chocolate, nutty and earthy flavors that the aromas suggested, but they dry out quickly to allow the fruit and spice to stand tall in the middle. Its banana balances against clove, its citrus acidity gives rise to its peppery nature, and its grain sweetness is softened by the vanilla tones. Finishing with an earthy and mineral taste, the slimmest of hops set in with herbal bitterness of mint and fresh grass.

Medium-light in body, the beer is creamy and fuller early. But as its racy carbonation quickly evaporates, it leaves that long grainy middle unprotected and the ale seems to fall flat and cola-like. But is late rebuttal of soft vanilla texture and drying mint leaves the taste buds on a high note.

The Dark Wheat Beer is pretty classic of what's found in Germany. Its doesn't remind me of the best examples of Munich, but I certainly had grainier versions and Left Hand's Dunkelweiss reminds me of those.
