Champagne bottled, corked, and wire cage. Sediment at bottom.
Served in pint glasses
This beer pours a tawny brown color with copious sediment at the end. Fairly clear otherwise. Carbonation is high. Head is a loose big bubbled off white foam that settles to a nice layer atop the brew. Warm bready malty aroma, along with noble hops in the nose. After the strong carbonation, there is a slightly sugary, toffee and caramel maltiness, touched with spicy rye. Also a slightly metallic flavor, maybe from German hops? Bitterness is mild to moderate with good balance. No fruitiness. Full bodied, smooth. Clean and round. Slightly dry. Fairly quaffable despite the high abv, which seems less than advertised.

An outdated beer from a retired beerline (tabernash) but a must have for me a lover of all things bock,pours a very nice deep reddish brown with a big fluffy slightly off white head that settles into a creamy mass.Complexities in the aroma abound some vanilla and slight rye sour notes with a big pizza dough malt and nutty backbone I noticed the alcohol beginning to creep up a little the more I drank.Very smooth goes down very easily for the alc% its deceiiving in its smoothness but it will kick u in the arss.A nice finale from Tabernash as it has been dissolved into just LeftHand,and a damn good finale it is.

The corks on these bottles have a big head on them but are fairly diffficult to work out of the thin bottle neck. Deep and slightly murky almost garnet color with a tan head that sits on top with good staying power. Laces well, nice vertical strings in a complete encircling crown. Piquant aroma, nutty and spicy and featuring a lush malt backdrop. Mouthfeel is a tad thin, carbonation pans out as about average. Interesting flavor, bitter and with asphalt and cigarette smoke notes, steeped in smokey leaves and black pepper. At the same time, there's a staunch and unchanging malty sweet background that gives the beer a very different complexity. A slightly stuffy bread-like finish rounds things out. Unique in many aspects and nicely done, I can't give it great drinkability but it makes a reviewer think a bit.

I'm actually very lucky that this beer didn't hurt me any worse than it did. I figured the cork would be similar to their Oak-Aged Impy Stout and Widdershims B'wine in it's difficulty to remove. I fiddled with it for a couple moments, then resigned to grab a corkscrew. But I had loosened it enough, and it must have been bloodthirsty, because it departed at escape velocity as soon as it had a clean shot at my face.
My lip is only starting to swell now, but I'm counting my blessings that I didn't shoot my eye out, red-rider style.
Let that be a lesson. And I'm fucking serious. It drew blood.
A muddied amber-stained dark brown below the steep wall of buttercreme foam.
Wafts of smoked plums, suede, wet tobacco, dank rye bread, and toffee.
Begins with a malted rush that brings the scent to fruition with burnt black grapes, charred plums, dates, mocha, and raw tobacco leaf. Rye adds a background smoky spice, with illusions of seared cloves and black pepper. The bundles of malt dovetail into a carpet of caramel. It rides out with notions of brown sugar coated herbs.
Full bodied, with stunted carbonation given the explosivity of the head.
The rye hues are belittled. This presents as a robust doppelbock equal on the roasted and fruited caramel tones, a la a Celebrator/Optimator cross.
One of the finest US examples. This one has it's homework done. And the extra credit too.

Poured from a big C&C'd bottle to a beer glass the liquid is a cloudy brown with ok carbonation. The head is 2 fingers, medium tan, fluffy and leaves little lace.
The smell is good lots of rye malt, mild hops and a tang on a good mai boch.
The taste is good, lots of rye and caramel, but an aftertaste of plastic takes away a bit.
The mouthfeel is good very smooth and creamy, lighter but still nice body, and good carbonation.
The drinkability is good. Not a bat brew tastes nice, but might not be worth the price tag. MK

Pours hazy, glowing amber with an enormous tan soap dish head.
Aroma has definitive rye bread notes with some wheat notes, biscuity hints and a light caramel hint with some faint dark, citrus hints. Very complex.
Flavor is chewy, caramel and toffee tastes with a heavy biscuit note and a slighty diacteyl note on the finish.
Mouthfeel is very full-bodied and alive. Semi-sweet front and a moderately spiced finish.
Drinkability is highly drinkable lager. Malty lagers are a special favorite of mine and this is special.

Highly carbonated. Slightly murky reddish brown body with a big, fizzy off-white head.
Misplaced apple cider notes in the nose. Some sweet notes in the nose as well. Chocolate.
The taste is thankfully more pleasant. Very smooth now given the age. Lightly sweet with lots of dried fruits and some vinous qualities. Light brown sugar. Light rye. Chocolate.
Relatively thick and coating given the style (and even given the ABV). Nothing unpleasant or overpowering in the mouthfeel though. Nice.
Overall, this seems to have peaked. The nose if off now, but the taste is still rather nice. If you have this still, open it now - it is not going to improve, in my opinion.

Well, this will be my second evaluation, the first time I sampled, the TheLongBeachBum and I were trying to see how many big bad boys we could down in the short span of 8 hours, after much consultation LBB and I figured 15 was the total, so as far as this beer goes all I put down was the name, and Good!
The beer vacates the bottle and takes up residence in the glass a cloudless deep mahogany color with the head super-sized and light tan in color, the texture spumy, with the residual lace a thick blanket to cover the glass. The nose has a touch of sour mash aroma hints of caramel, and a touch of yeast, quite crisp and pleasing to the senses, start is sweet, nice malt and rye profile, the top is middling in its feel to the palate. Finish is stinging in its acidity, the hops kind-hearted in their spiciness, quite dry aftertaste that lingers on and on, and as I sample this time, I see even Three Sheets To The Wind, I know Good beer when I taste it.

Muddy brown, fully diminishing light rown head. Very malty aroma with bold toffee, very woody. Herbal peaks come and complement the brown milk chocolate and cinnamon nose. Very chocolatey palate with notes of cloves. No acidity noticeable which Im grateful for in this context. I think what would truly make it in a class of its own would be smoke suggestions. Rye is indeed present though, like earthy dry nuts. Airy mouthfeel, bubbly, highly carbonated, medium bodied. A bit overrated I think, but this is an original beer in which the rye is admirably well integrated. Cheers CaptainCougar once again.

Looks like wildflower honey with a great and lofty froth that holds like meringue! So large and airy, yet firm and stiff!!
Smells like old apple peels, horse leathers (saddle, cinches and such) and butterscotch.
Rhubarb custard, soured apple cider, black pepper, and the unmistakeable earth flavor of rye! There's some wet granite, and more fruit juices. Rockin' bock. This totally kicks my bockside. It's so smooth, but complex and rich. This is great.

a: pours a nice copper orange color with about a half inch of head that dissapears relatively fast leaving a thick ring of lace around the edge of the glass leaves sticky lacing around the glass as the beer level drops in the glass
s: caramel malts, fruity aroma apricots? figs? nice dark malty aroma
t: much like the aroma, caramel malts, dark fruits with some added alcohol flavor
m: medium to full bodied beer good carbonation
overall, i hope i can find another of these i really liked it

Pours out of the 750 a dark amber with a high light tan head that leaves some sticky lace as it drops back into the body. Aroma is rich with sweet dark fruits and bready malts. The rye and spicy notes come out more as this warmed. The flavor is sweet with fruits and caramel but balanced well with the doughy malt. A bit spicy and nutty as well. Reminded me of several eisbocks I have had. Finishes up sweet with some rye notes. Creamy body with soft carbonation and a good thickness in the feel. Smooth drinker that goes down easy and is plenty tasty that I finished the bottle way too quickly. I definitely wish I had bought a few of these.

The body is a dark brown with some definite purple notes. The Head is sizeable and a pale khaki. The aroma is mostly brown sugar, oak and a bit of wine. The flavor is sugary dark malts, a little cocoa and the slightest hint of wine. Theres a bit of past-their-prime banana and pear that complements the malt nicely. Still, the body is thin and flavor a bit weak.

Caramel brown body and massive foamy beige head. This was a hell of a gusher. Musky, malty nose of yeast, baked bread, dark fruits, and chocolate. Burnt caramel, chocolate, and cola flavors. Medium acidity in the finish. Full malty mouthfeel with lively carbonation. This is a nice anniversary beer and a very interesting bottle-conditioned bock.

Found this on my last run to the Dilly Deli for 11.99. I haven't had a rye beer in a while but always enjoy them and always am ready to try a new one.
Appearance - pours a cloudy flat brown/orange into a glass. A sizeable head is on the brief side but maintains a thin, dense cap of lightly tanned bubbles.Short bits of lacing are strewn about the glass surface. Fairly impressive bead action inside. As the beer levels lowers, the lace takes a sheeting effect as the bubbles just keep on comin'.
Aroma - very rye, bready aroma, almost approaching a soy-like quality.
Taste - much like it smells. The rye is intense to the point of having a soy quality. A dark caramel flavor, somewhat sweet but not sugary at all. Good stuff, though a rye bock is a new and unfamiliar taste to me and not one I'm jumping through hoops over.
Mouthfeel - quite smooth. The abv is invisible, I don't have the budget to buy another one to age but would be very interested in how that turns out.
Drinkability - probably not one I'd revisit if I had the chance but it was a unique and tasty experience.

Poured a deep amber color with a decent head into a pilsener glass.
Definitely smells of a bock beer, slightly sweet and malty. Not much hop presence.
Taste was interesting, but I was a bit disappointed. A definite doppelbock flavor, but the rye highlights were more of a bitter tang than a pumpernickel, bready flavor that I've had from other rye beers. It didn't taste bad, just not up to what I was expecting.
Smooth mouthfeel, with some definite alcohol warming.
Overall I thought that this was a decent beer, but it was quite expensive at $9 for the 750ml bottle and I wouldn't buy it again at that price.

What an excellent beer. Rye beers are always a bit fickle, but not this one. Bready and yeasty the the nose. Perhaps a bit grainy, with a wheat-like aroma. Sweet malt, but balanced well not to become too sweet. Appearance is amber with a bit of a haze. Well headed and laces very well. Tastes moderately of barley malt and fruits of over-ripened oranges and grapes. Throw in some clove and curraco for spiciness. A light hop bittering and flavor remains constant, but never comes to the foreground. Flavors become a bit grainy into the body. A thicker beer to the feel than expectin in a Rye. Great creaminess and texture. The light grain flavor becomes a little astringent into the body and finish. Finish is light of hop, rye, and a bready / yeasty sweetness.

The beer pours a dark amber/brown color with a 1/2" offwhite head that fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a dry crystal and roasted malt scent along with a mild rye bite. The taste is decent also. It has a nice roasted and crystal malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes sweet and rich with with a mild rye bite. It's tastey, but not over the top. The mouthfeel is good. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good drinking beer. It's smooth and full flavored; a nice brew.

Presentation: Screen printed 750ml green dimpled based flask. Sealed with a thumbed cork and secured with a red steel cap and a cage.
Appearance: Gorgeous deep red body when backlit that exhibits a mahogany presentation when it just sits on the desk. Nice tan colored head rises slowly and lazily hangs around but then quickly decides to give up the fight and collapses to a thin broken surface covering with only a halo ring to maintain stability. Zero lacing and below average conditioning. The final top up rescued some life from this one; the head lasted longer and looked a lot better.
Nose: Sour hints mix with dry powdery Rye and bleached flour. Hoppy and tangy with some intriguing dryness. Dark fruits build as the temperature does, plums, figs and smoked prunes. It also reminds me of those Brown bars in Belgium; in so much as it has a whiff of Cigarette and Cigar smoke.
Taste: Spicy malts seem to reign in a light sweetness which could threaten to spoil this one but doesnt. Middles with a dry Rye and finishes with some talcum soft wholemeal flour. Nutty feel with a little crushed sweet chestnut. Peppery and spicy at the same time. Shockingly dry at times, but nicely balanced with a biting caramel toffee like hop-tangy finish.
Mouthfeel: Feels utterly immovable, solid, dependable and yet at the same time dry and medium in poise. Long lingering finish is hard to forget.
Drinkability: Majestic in it simplicity. I enjoyed and reveled in plundering the whole 750 by myself. This is great example.
Overall: What I totally forgot about was that I actually first sampled this one with the legendary Gusler at the Papago Brewing in Arizona way back in February 2004, many moons ago. So, like Guslers own Beer Reviews states, this is my second time with this one, but as I dont usually review in social circles, this time I get to do it justice with a proper Review.
Excellent stuff, a massive Wry Rye Thanks to BigHuge for this expensive beauty, it is much appreciated Sir Joe.

03/06/09- Purchased at Sun Devil Liquors in Mesa, AZ.
Presentation- 750ml bottle with no freshness info. Poured into a Samuel Adams specialty glass.
Appearance- Dark chocolate brown colored pour. Thick and somewhat murky looking. Full three fingered head on pour which settles to a slight lasting rim. Lacing is light and spotty.
Smell- Aroma of chocolate malt..and lots of it. Very bready. Smells a bit burnt or at least highly roasted.
Taste- Flavors of what I know now is rye. Minor chocolate with a super large malty base. Tastes like something you could drink for breakfast.
Mouthfeel- Thick, creamy with a medium to lower carbonation level. Minor hops in the finish.
Drinkability- Very nice tasting brew. Very thick and viscous for a bock. Filling. Worth the try for sure.

This is the first rye bock I've had and I'll try another if one comes my way. This lager had a pleasant orange/ light brown hue with an average head. I was a little disappointed in the large amount of sediment in the bottle. I have no problem with some sediment but it was pretty murky in the last 6 ounces. This definitiely added a yeasty flavor that was not necessary. However the first 20 ounces were very enjoyable. The aroma was of spice and a little malt sugar. The flavor had a good amount of rye with residual sugars and some fruity esters that are reminiscent of grapes. Hops were subdued. The mouthfeel was full and somewhat viscous. This was expected for a lager of this strength. Overall, I am impressed with Tabernash's quest into an undeveloped style.

The beer poured into the glass clear medium to deep amber with a tan head which rose tall and fell slowly to lace the glass from top to bottom.
The aroma was fruity with a strong bready and caramel aspect. The beer was intensly malty as a bock should be with a slight spicy rye aromatic.
The flavor was malty with a definite rye presence and light spice. The malty flavor was almost too intense with caramel that was dark and strong. The flavor also contained a bit of alcohol, but it did not detract. As the beer warmed it became less enticing and complex and the bittering emerged showcasing quite a strong amount of hop presence. The beer was bready and interesting.
The finish was dry with a lasting fruitiness and rye presence into the aftertaste. The body was medium full and the carbonation was not high. The alcohol was definitely present in the warming after consumption. Drink a bit colder than normal.
750 ml bottle. What a downer to find out a beer you JUST got on the shelves in NC is retired. That means this beast was over a year old prior to it's arrival.

Very well carbonated, produces a thick light brown head. A dark amber color, that is a hazy garnet red when held up to the light. I would swear that the aroma has a hint of peanut butter in it. The aroma has elements of alcohol, dark fruit, grapes, lightly sweet, and a definite nuttiness. This beer is a little bit too carbonated, so I give it a shake and a swirl to get some of the excess out. I end up with 4 inch head that almost escapes my glass. The taste is lightly sweet, with a hint of the nutty flavor, which, must be from the rye. There is a hint of alcohol in the finish. A spicy grain flavor is here. This beer is light bodied, though rich in flavor; I like the mix between the two. Very smooth and easy drinking for a Bock. Straight forward and thoroughly enjoyable. Notes of dark fruit, mostly a caramelized raisin type thing going on here. I am still struck by the nutty flavor of this beer, it is definitely here and quite intriguing. In fact this beer score extra points for this flavor. The nuttiness is subtle, it is especially in the finish; it lasts and even grows stronger long after the beer has left my mouth.
