Highly carbonated. Slightly murky reddish brown body with a big, fizzy off-white head.
Misplaced apple cider notes in the nose. Some sweet notes in the nose as well. Chocolate.
The taste is thankfully more pleasant. Very smooth now given the age. Lightly sweet with lots of dried fruits and some vinous qualities. Light brown sugar. Light rye. Chocolate.
Relatively thick and coating given the style (and even given the ABV). Nothing unpleasant or overpowering in the mouthfeel though. Nice.
Overall, this seems to have peaked. The nose if off now, but the taste is still rather nice. If you have this still, open it now - it is not going to improve, in my opinion.

03/06/09- Purchased at Sun Devil Liquors in Mesa, AZ.
Presentation- 750ml bottle with no freshness info. Poured into a Samuel Adams specialty glass.
Appearance- Dark chocolate brown colored pour. Thick and somewhat murky looking. Full three fingered head on pour which settles to a slight lasting rim. Lacing is light and spotty.
Smell- Aroma of chocolate malt..and lots of it. Very bready. Smells a bit burnt or at least highly roasted.
Taste- Flavors of what I know now is rye. Minor chocolate with a super large malty base. Tastes like something you could drink for breakfast.
Mouthfeel- Thick, creamy with a medium to lower carbonation level. Minor hops in the finish.
Drinkability- Very nice tasting brew. Very thick and viscous for a bock. Filling. Worth the try for sure.

Poured from a big C&C'd bottle to a beer glass the liquid is a cloudy brown with ok carbonation. The head is 2 fingers, medium tan, fluffy and leaves little lace.
The smell is good lots of rye malt, mild hops and a tang on a good mai boch.
The taste is good, lots of rye and caramel, but an aftertaste of plastic takes away a bit.
The mouthfeel is good very smooth and creamy, lighter but still nice body, and good carbonation.
The drinkability is good. Not a bat brew tastes nice, but might not be worth the price tag. MK

On tap at Taco Mac located in Kennesaw, GA on Chastain Road (Chastaino Mac).
Appearance: Clear, dark chestnut brown body with a small, white head.
Smell: Aroma of toasty caramel, chocolate, cherries, and golden raisins.
Taste: Rich medley of chocolate, burnt caramel, and fruit flavors upfront with a medium amount of sweetness. The fruitiness subsides, allowing a touch of alcohol to take its place. Hint of Slight encroaching spiciness from the rye grains and hops. Warming, long finish with all of the flavors simply not wanting to let go and say "goodbye".
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: I'd had one of the original bottles back in the day and, well, didn't like it one bit. This, however, is much better.

Appearance: Red-orange in color, a little hazy, big head.
Smell: Very malty, complex and fruity.
Taste: Sweet and bready followed by an intense caramel sweetness. It reminds me of Old Horizontal barleywine without the alcohol burn or hops.
Mouthfeel: Light for a double bock, fine for a regular bock.
Drinkability: As a one-time release, it'll be hard to have this again.
Picked this up at a deep discount. Autographed bottle. Tasty stuff that I can't detect any of the rye in the rye bock. Reminds me of a English barleywine or a lighter double bock. Good stuff.

a: pours a nice copper orange color with about a half inch of head that dissapears relatively fast leaving a thick ring of lace around the edge of the glass leaves sticky lacing around the glass as the beer level drops in the glass
s: caramel malts, fruity aroma apricots? figs? nice dark malty aroma
t: much like the aroma, caramel malts, dark fruits with some added alcohol flavor
m: medium to full bodied beer good carbonation
overall, i hope i can find another of these i really liked it

Poured a deep amber color with a decent head into a pilsener glass.
Definitely smells of a bock beer, slightly sweet and malty. Not much hop presence.
Taste was interesting, but I was a bit disappointed. A definite doppelbock flavor, but the rye highlights were more of a bitter tang than a pumpernickel, bready flavor that I've had from other rye beers. It didn't taste bad, just not up to what I was expecting.
Smooth mouthfeel, with some definite alcohol warming.
Overall I thought that this was a decent beer, but it was quite expensive at $9 for the 750ml bottle and I wouldn't buy it again at that price.

A: Autographed 750ml corktop bottle good start so far. Pours a ruddy rootbeer color with some haze to it. Head is medium sized, raw oatmeal look to it.
S: Rye, nutmeg, cinnamon, caramel and twinkies.
T: Begins calm and unassuming. First impression is that it doesnt leave an impession. Flavors are muted for the most part begins with yellow apple juice with traces of cinnamon. Bready caramel dough comes next adding a malt backbone. Little bit of tingling sweetness at the tip of the tongue from the rye, sort of like old OJ or carrot juice. As it warms, the maltiness continues with raisins, plums and brown sugar simple syrup. Only a minor hop profile can be found with a touch of bitterness, which could be contributed by the rye itself. Finishes with flashes of vanilla, apricot and long toasted grains.
M: Medium body with a soft complexity.
D: This beer took on more personality as it warmed up. Simple, straight forward beer with nice flavor.

Poured from a corked 750 ml. bottle. Leaves a one finger head that quickly recedes to a foam ring at the edges, and a slight bit of spotty lacing. Body is a hazy garnet.
Smell - Horseblanket dominates, with weak aroma of apples, figs, and apricots, and a faint hint of caramel.
Taste - much like the smell, but with more caramel to counterpoint the dominating sour horseblanket. Aftertaste is also sour horseblanket. Where is the rye ? It's not here in the taste, or even hinted at in the aroma.
Mouthfeel - medium bodied, and rather semi-dry.
Drinkability - this is decent, not great, or even above average. This is not even bock-like, but more like a weak Belgian-style ale, and no rye as promised by the name.

This ripe bottle had a large pop upon uncorking it. Color runs dark brown to plum, with a thick tan head that settles leaving a thin film. Burnt, tangy, aged, dark fruit nose with caramel notes. The taste starts out with lots of fruity tang, plums and cherries, before the finish dries out with some chocolate roast. Rye flavor seems pretty faint. The carbonation is not necessarily sharp, but it is quite foamy, making me belch more than usual. The body is light to medium.
I saw this bottle sit on the shelf for some time at a local liquor store and was hoping it had held up well. Not bad. I probably won't pick up any of the remaining few, but it was an interesting try...

Orange sun tea suffused with candy apple red when backlit. I've seen many a barleywine that was just this color. The cap is pale caramel with a splash or two of orange juice and is occupying half the glass at the moment. Thick buttery lace is beginning to adhere just beneath the upper rim and is the capper on an outstanding looking appearance.
The nose is a bit low on power, but then I'm attempting to assess it through two fingers of foam. It smells like toasted whole grain bread with an indeterminate fruitiness and a mild spiciness that doesn't really smell like rye to me. An interesting variation on the bock style.
There's much more spiciness--now identifiable as rye--on the palate and the beer is the better for it. In fact, Rye Bock tastes exactly like I would expect a bock brewed with rye malt to taste. The flavor profile consists of well-toasted cereal grains, yeasty rye bread without the caraway seeds, bitter orange, caramel, dates and cinnamon. This is quite the complex little lager. Well okay... not so little.
I'm not usually enamored with the bock style, but the addition of rye malt was an inspired choice. There's still a respectable amount of bitterness after more than two years in the bottle, as well as a corresponding amount of tangy, fruity sourness. The only thing keeping the flavor score from jumping up a notch is that the beer is broader than it is deep. There are plenty of flavors swirling about, but they lack ballast, for want of a better word.
Part of the problem may be a body/mouthfeel that is beginning to show its age. It's still enjoyable, but I'm betting that some degree of viscosity has been lost over the years. A relative dearth of carbonation contributes to the lagery smoothness while keeping mouth interest on the low side.
I had serious reservations about spending $12 for this bottle, but in the end, I couldn't pass up a chance to try a rye bock since I'm so fond of that particular grain when used in the brewing of beer. While I can't say that I regret the purchase, I wish that I had run across Tabernash Rye Bock closer to its birth rather than just short of its third birthday.

This is the first rye bock I've had and I'll try another if one comes my way. This lager had a pleasant orange/ light brown hue with an average head. I was a little disappointed in the large amount of sediment in the bottle. I have no problem with some sediment but it was pretty murky in the last 6 ounces. This definitiely added a yeasty flavor that was not necessary. However the first 20 ounces were very enjoyable. The aroma was of spice and a little malt sugar. The flavor had a good amount of rye with residual sugars and some fruity esters that are reminiscent of grapes. Hops were subdued. The mouthfeel was full and somewhat viscous. This was expected for a lager of this strength. Overall, I am impressed with Tabernash's quest into an undeveloped style.

Appearance: Pours a reddish brown with a nice, but small tan head.
Smell: Smells great. A roastiness to it with fruit. Little or no hop smell due to the style and it probably being over a year or two old. Rye is hard to pick out.
Taste: Rye is very apparent in the taste. I love rye beers so this a real treat. The roastiness and sweetness of a bock with that great rye flavoring. Aging on this beer has done no harm. Drank it on a cool summer night. Perfect beer for the evening. Cost me $13 which I though was particularly high. Glad I had an opportunity to drink it though, a highly enjoyable, well balanced beer.

Pours out of the 750 a dark amber with a high light tan head that leaves some sticky lace as it drops back into the body. Aroma is rich with sweet dark fruits and bready malts. The rye and spicy notes come out more as this warmed. The flavor is sweet with fruits and caramel but balanced well with the doughy malt. A bit spicy and nutty as well. Reminded me of several eisbocks I have had. Finishes up sweet with some rye notes. Creamy body with soft carbonation and a good thickness in the feel. Smooth drinker that goes down easy and is plenty tasty that I finished the bottle way too quickly. I definitely wish I had bought a few of these.

Faintly muddled brown with a touch of scarlet from within. A sizable khaki head shows no plans of leaving, eventually settling into a nice, stiff collar, leaving plenty of lace.
Aroma is cocoa-rye bread with sourdough sharpness and notes of cracked pepper, fruit, citrus, and faint floral smoke.
Flavor follows closely. A strong rye character is both nutty, sharp, and has a peppery zing. There some fruit and light citrus followed by a floral hop finish. There are hints of pickling spices and a faint nuance of peat smoke. Now where's that pastrami and provoline sandwich at?
Body is medium, but retains a watery feel due to the big bubbles of carbonation that are quick to escape, leaving a flat feel.

Boo hoo! The cage for the cork broke and it forced me to drink this before I wanted to drink it.
A cool smoking gun grey smoke vapor follows the thwip of the cork pop from the 750 mL. Released into the glass with a dim, foggy russet amber hue topped off with a settled khaki island.
Nose: Ohhh yeah, there is rye in them thar hills. Yureka! Thats rye! And some pancake malts too.
First swigs: An unavoidable bready rye characteristic that flows throughout the taste. Some secondary root beer. Some dryness initially followed by a linger of almost maple syrup. Smooth sugary flavors. Finally in the finish some dry hop character pops out!
Silky feel. Taunt crisp carbonation. Medium feel with a buttery middle. Gentle in the rye department, but quite tasty.
Last swigs: Sweet sugary rye soaked in sugary tea. A bit one dimensional, but rye beer is supposed to be like rye, but at least Hop Rod Rye mixes up the party.

Found this on my last run to the Dilly Deli for 11.99. I haven't had a rye beer in a while but always enjoy them and always am ready to try a new one.
Appearance - pours a cloudy flat brown/orange into a glass. A sizeable head is on the brief side but maintains a thin, dense cap of lightly tanned bubbles.Short bits of lacing are strewn about the glass surface. Fairly impressive bead action inside. As the beer levels lowers, the lace takes a sheeting effect as the bubbles just keep on comin'.
Aroma - very rye, bready aroma, almost approaching a soy-like quality.
Taste - much like it smells. The rye is intense to the point of having a soy quality. A dark caramel flavor, somewhat sweet but not sugary at all. Good stuff, though a rye bock is a new and unfamiliar taste to me and not one I'm jumping through hoops over.
Mouthfeel - quite smooth. The abv is invisible, I don't have the budget to buy another one to age but would be very interested in how that turns out.
Drinkability - probably not one I'd revisit if I had the chance but it was a unique and tasty experience.

The beer pours a dark amber/brown color with a 1/2" offwhite head that fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a dry crystal and roasted malt scent along with a mild rye bite. The taste is decent also. It has a nice roasted and crystal malt flavor that goes down easy and finishes sweet and rich with with a mild rye bite. It's tastey, but not over the top. The mouthfeel is good. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good drinking beer. It's smooth and full flavored; a nice brew.

Had no date on the bottle or cork.
Appearance- Poured a luscious fist of a head into my mug. The head retention was very good. The head went from fist to nice foamy layer that stayed with me the entire drinkage. The beer poured a cloudy, deep garnet brown with a lot of lacing. The lacing came on strong at first and then died down to a steady pace after five minutes or so.
Smell- This is were my preconceptions started to dash. The smell was a "bad" yeasty aroma. The sweetness good be best described as old or moldy malts. Maybe a hint of rye.
Taste- When the beer was pourd and sipped right out of the frig, the flavors were sub-par. An overall yeasty mold flavor was prsent only slight hopping and malting to be noticed. Once the beer went up about ten degress or so, the nastiness began to subdue to a borderline bland bock.
Mouthfeel- The best adjective my palate could come up with is OLD. This beer tasted as if it was on Binny's shelf way to long.

This beer pours a tawny brown color with copious sediment at the end. Fairly clear otherwise. Carbonation is high. Head is a loose big bubbled off white foam that settles to a nice layer atop the brew. Warm bready malty aroma, along with noble hops in the nose. After the strong carbonation, there is a slightly sugary, toffee and caramel maltiness, touched with spicy rye. Also a slightly metallic flavor, maybe from German hops? Bitterness is mild to moderate with good balance. No fruitiness. Full bodied, smooth. Clean and round. Slightly dry. Fairly quaffable despite the high abv, which seems less than advertised.

An outdated beer from a retired beerline (tabernash) but a must have for me a lover of all things bock,pours a very nice deep reddish brown with a big fluffy slightly off white head that settles into a creamy mass.Complexities in the aroma abound some vanilla and slight rye sour notes with a big pizza dough malt and nutty backbone I noticed the alcohol beginning to creep up a little the more I drank.Very smooth goes down very easily for the alc% its deceiiving in its smoothness but it will kick u in the arss.A nice finale from Tabernash as it has been dissolved into just LeftHand,and a damn good finale it is.

Presentation: Screen printed 750ml green dimpled based flask. Sealed with a thumbed cork and secured with a red steel cap and a cage.
Appearance: Gorgeous deep red body when backlit that exhibits a mahogany presentation when it just sits on the desk. Nice tan colored head rises slowly and lazily hangs around but then quickly decides to give up the fight and collapses to a thin broken surface covering with only a halo ring to maintain stability. Zero lacing and below average conditioning. The final top up rescued some life from this one; the head lasted longer and looked a lot better.
Nose: Sour hints mix with dry powdery Rye and bleached flour. Hoppy and tangy with some intriguing dryness. Dark fruits build as the temperature does, plums, figs and smoked prunes. It also reminds me of those Brown bars in Belgium; in so much as it has a whiff of Cigarette and Cigar smoke.
Taste: Spicy malts seem to reign in a light sweetness which could threaten to spoil this one but doesnt. Middles with a dry Rye and finishes with some talcum soft wholemeal flour. Nutty feel with a little crushed sweet chestnut. Peppery and spicy at the same time. Shockingly dry at times, but nicely balanced with a biting caramel toffee like hop-tangy finish.
Mouthfeel: Feels utterly immovable, solid, dependable and yet at the same time dry and medium in poise. Long lingering finish is hard to forget.
Drinkability: Majestic in it simplicity. I enjoyed and reveled in plundering the whole 750 by myself. This is great example.
Overall: What I totally forgot about was that I actually first sampled this one with the legendary Gusler at the Papago Brewing in Arizona way back in February 2004, many moons ago. So, like Guslers own Beer Reviews states, this is my second time with this one, but as I dont usually review in social circles, this time I get to do it justice with a proper Review.
Excellent stuff, a massive Wry Rye Thanks to BigHuge for this expensive beauty, it is much appreciated Sir Joe.
