Enjoyed by me on tap at Chef Paul’s Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, Illinois July 26th, 2012 in the presence of my brother in law Mat. I believe the place had been renamed simply “Bavarian Lodge” but I still refer to it as “Chef Paul’s.” By any name this is a world class BeerAdvocate place. Anyone reading this should seek it out.
Review from notes taken while I enjoyed the beer.
A No light comes through the body of this beer. Medium brown head with excellent curtain lacing on the inside of the glass upon repeated sips. 4.5
S Campfire smoke. Medium malt noted on repeated sniffs. I really like the smell of this beer. To some it is off putting but not to me. 4.5
T Dates, raisins, dark fruits, smoke with medium roast malt sweetness. A LOT is going on in the taste. I have to say I did not pick all of that up in the smell but I guess it was the smoke that eclipsed all of the other aspects of the beer. Anyway, this is a fine tasting beer. 4.0
M As suggested, a lot going on in this beer makes the mouthfeel really big. I like that. 4.0
D/O Drinkability is alright. Overall this is a well crafted beer. I still like that smoke smell. 4.0
