This is an interesting brew - described by the brewer as their pale with both red onion and basil added for flavor.
The color is a cloudy golden amber with average white head. The smell is very nice with a lot of basil herbal smell. The feel is bitter hard to say if it is onion or hops with slight sweetness in the finish.

The taste has a spiciness that I would not necessarily say is really onion-y - but combined with the other flavors of the base it works and does not overdo that taste. The basil is more aromatic that flavor and the malt sweetness sort of mellows the impact. This is an interesting beer not like many out there since I have not tasted a 'red onion' ale before.

This next horizontal as part of the eradication of The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody is going to be fun, if nothing else. I first met co-owner & brewer Greg Schertzer at the Annual Capital City Invitational Beer Festival, held at Appalachian B.C. in Harrisburg several years ago & continuing. He seemed to be a passionate sort, but I wondered as to his sustainability. I no longer doubt in his longevity & he even came to The FGBS recently for a tasting of his wares. Howling Henry is his beagle, who sits in on every brew day & howls. Ha!

From the bottle: "Crafting Beer Without Rules".

Poor Henry has been howling every time that I Pop! off another cap. Well, the good news for him is that this the last of my Howling Henry's beers left to review. I had this when it was first released & Greg says that he has tweaked the recipe as some people's feedback said that the flavors were too intense/strong for their liking. Hmm. Read the label, folks.

As I Pop!ped the cap, I could hear Henry start up with his mournful howls, but I had beer to drink, so I gave it a gentle pour into the awaiting glass. A vigorous in-glass swirl raised just under three fingers of foamy, fizzy, light-tan head with moderate retention. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was redolent with basil! OMFG. I love fresh basil when cooking & this smelled like a pre-baked pizza! Bready with tons of basil. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very earthy and reminiscent of freshly picked herbs & vegetables from the garden. My late Pops used to make his own pizzas with (especially) herbs from his backyard garden & I was reminded of those days with this beer. The basil was both a blessing and a curse in that it added a lightly minty, very herbal aspect to the beer, but on the other hand, it was close to overwhelming. Finish was dry, herbal, slightly minty, very refreshing & on the extreme finish, I could taste onion. If the recipe is game for tweaking, I would suggest toning down the basil & amping up the onion. JMHO.
