Pours a nice black color with a 2 finger dark brown head. The head retention is not the best, but not too bad either.
The nose has a nice smoke aroma. It also has hints of chocolate and vanilla.
Taste - Is a bit sweet up front, but on the backside is where the action is. I get the vanilla and chocolate notes mixed in with the smoke, which produces a great flavor.
The body is slightly watery, but only slightly. The smoke does linger in my throat, and on my palate.
Very good smoked porter, and a pleasure to drink.

A: Small but acceptable thin brown head on a very dark bodied beer. The head fades, but I must say this is one of the darkest, thickest looking porters I've come across.

S: Super strong on the smoke, almost the the point of seeming artificial. There is still a cooked malt aroma underneath though. No hops.

T: The smoke is perhaps even more dominant in the taste, but it's less artificial. More like what steak or a pie cooked over a campfire tastes like (yes I have cooked pie over a camp fire). Still, it's a pretty one dimensional beer.

M: Here the beer is lacking, there's a funny balance of texture and body. I just don't like it, and it needs some carbonation.

D: Drinkable, for sure. A beer that would be great with the foods you pair with smoked beers.

I really enjoyed this beer. I had tried the Schlenkerla series before and was really interested in what this small brewery from Southeast Minnesota would bring to the table.

Stagecoach pours a slightly thick, opaque black color with a creamy, tan head.

The aromas are dominantly smokey. Once I got past the smoked malt aroma, I picked up on rich, roasted malts, bittersweet chocolate, and hints of caramel.

The smooth body supports the smokey malt flavors that form the backbone of this porter. Roasted malts rise up in the center along with coffee and sweet flavors such as chocolate.

The mouthfeel is lighter than expected, but it makes it a very enjoyable beer to drink on a cold night or paired alongside ham or sausage.

12oz bottle into my new Blackstar Co-op tumbler. Thanks to ballz50401 for the extra!

Gorgeous body shows a jet black coffee color with a hint of cola at the edge. Not much head, even with an ambitious pour, but half a cap of dark custard foam does eventually build. Even stranger still is that halfway through the glass, I noticed that without swirling there was a full cap of creamy foam! Smoky notes in the nose complement Baker's chocolate and dark fruits. Excellent use of roasted dark grains--really enticing.

Smoked grains pull through in the flavor as well and linger long into the finish. Very earthy and musty. It's too bad the middle of this beer drops out to leave a semi-stale sourness that hints at dark fruits and chocolate. A bit chalky and grainy at times, although the medium body is nicely carbonated and smooth on the whole. All in all, a decent porter with some good smoke qualities to it. Probably not something I'd pick up on my own, but I'm glad I got the chance to try it.

Very dark black color with a very large mocha colored head that lasts a long time. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left on the glass. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. A little smokiness comes out but overall has a just a sweet aroma. The smoke really comes out in the taste. Other flavors of bittersweet chocolate and malt with a heavy roast. This beer falls just a little short of being a great beer. A little added complexity in the flavor and they would be there. Medium body and wonderfully carbonated. Has a silky smooth, soft texture that makes this a pleasure to drink. The smoke might weigh on the palate after one or two of these but otherwise is a suberb drinker.

I just visited Mantorville, MN to check out the little brewery in this charming, history rich small town. I meet with owner/brewer Tod Fyten to check out his brewery and talk beer. While I was there, I was able to get a six pack of the newly bottled Stagecoach Smoked Porter that is no longer under agreement in Black River Falls, WI. This is only the second time it's been bottled and is now bottled in Duluth, MN which stays true to its Minnesota roots. So...lets give it a try.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint. Pours a black, thick viscous liquid with a nice tight mocha head. This one is as dark as night. In the nose I get notes of chocolate, coffee, peat smoke, and tobacco. There is a good amount of sweet roasted malts that blend well around the palate and finishes with a touch of smokiness. This almost has a spongy-like mouthfeel that starts out very smooth and ends with a little carbonation bite. Overall, this is a very enjoyable porter that I would recommend giving a try.

Pours a semi-thick deep and dark shade of brown. Almost black. Thin dark brown head that recedes pretty quickly and leaves no lace.

Big roasty malt with quite a bit of sweetness and a mild smoke scent. This reminds me of Snowstorm 09 with some smoke.

Lots of roasty toasty dark malts with some sweet chocolate. Mild smokiness, but a great addition to the beer. This really has some nice depth to it. Clean finishing.

Carbonation seems to be right on. Smooth and soft. Not full bodied, but approaching it.

As drinkable a porter as I've had. This has a lot going for it. This beer could really be a hidden gem. I'll say it again, it reminds me of Schell's Snowstorm 09. I will welcome this one again.

So, I had this about a year ago or so on tap at Newt's here in Rochester, and remember this being an excellent burger-beer. However, the bottled version leaves a little to be desired. No carb fizz upon popping the cap. Pours a dark brown color and is nearly pitch black in the pint glass, small tan head and no lacing. Light smokiness and chocolate in the nose, a bit off coffee in there somewhere too. Flavor is where I wish this was more like the original kegged version I had. Flavor is nice and chocolaty, but I'm really missing the smokiness that I remember this beer having. Chocolate and roastiness are balanced nicely by a very light bitterness. Medium bodied, very, very light carbonation. If this thing had more smoke and more bubbles, I would be loving it right now. But as it is, it just tastes like a really good, standard porter. Not bad though, and I will continue to drink this if I ever see it on tap. This is the perfect beer to pair with burgers or any grilled flesh!
