When I was at the University of Toledo, I discovered this place my Sr. year.

I was recently in town and decided to check it out again.

There was no Alesmith ( beside Yulesmith ) there, and none of the newer Founders beers I was hoping to find. ( Backwoods and the Imperial Stout )

On the other hand I was able to pick up some of my staples ( Two Hearted, Expedition, Edmund Fitz, Bigfoot ) and was able to get some of the GL Christmas ale. Id imagine those are pretty available everywhere here though.

All and all though I was pretty sad with the selection at the time I was there.

I had purchased Speedway and some New Holland Beers there in the past.

Not worth the hour drive out of my way this time.

I was so impressed by this establishment that I had to write a review, only my third places review and first one in several years. I've been using this site to look for places to buy beer and find places to eat that serve craft brews when my wife and I travel, so last week while I was checking the listings for Toledo I checked this establishments website and figured I'd give it a try.

We were both impressed when we walked in and saw the variey of six packs available. We've been in several larger places in the past but this place seemed to have as many choices as the big chain we would visit in Florida while at Spring training.

One of the employees asked us if we needed help finding anything and we gave him our standard reply to that question, "Thanks, but we're just browsing right now." My wife and I are polar opposites when it comes to beer: she loves IPAs and I would rather drink beers that aren't as bitter. Also, she was always afraid to try an IPA that she hadn't tried before while I was willing to try just about anything as long as it was a style that I like, such as Pale Ales, Hefeweizens, Wheat beers, Scottish and Irish Ales.

I had already picked up a six pack of Bellhaven's Scottish Ale when she finally decided to try something new and asked the gentleman if he could recommend a good IPA. This is what sealed the deal: by asking her what she liked (Sierra Nevada Torpedo and Ruthless Rye are two of her favorites) he recommended Jackie O's Hop Ryot and White Rajah, both brewed in Ohio. Then he asked me what I liked and I told him, buth then remembered that I had tried a Saison once and asked him if he could recommend a good one. He hooked me up with a six pack of Monkey King Saison and when I told him that this was our first trip to Toledo and that we were planning on visiting a local brewery the next day he advised me against it, saying that it was in a bad section of the town and that they didn't really have much to offer in the way of customer service. He then recommended a place where we could try a lot of the local craft brews and have a good dinner besides.

We ended up talking about homebrewing for several minutes and I was again impressed by his knowledge when I told him that I had started brewing smaller batches (3 gallons) because I liked to try different hop varieties just to get a sense of what it tastes like but my last one hadn't turned out well (too bitter for me, too sour for my wife) and he told me about a method of brewing that would give me the aroma of the hops and just a hint of the taste.

If you are ever in this area make it a point to buy your beer in this establisment.
