750 ml bottle, with bottled on date of 12/04/2013 printed on the bottleneck. Best by 12/2015 also printed there. This will be my third beer from Brewery Ommegang, and the second of their Game Of Thrones themed beers. I've never seen the show, and don't care, I'm just here for the beer.
Poured into a Duvel tulip.
A - Pours a nice coppery ruby reddish colored body with four plus fingers of frothy tan head. Very excellent head retention, and it leaves nice fat sheets of bubbly lace. Looks very nice.
S - The smell is interesting, but not as pronounced as I had hoped. Belgian yeast is apparent, some citrusy / wine-like notes - grapes, cherries, lemon. This must be the "dark fruit" the label describes, but it's not as much as I'd like. Earthy caramel / red malt.
T - The taste follows the aroma - it's nice, but it's lacking something. Grainy / earthy red malts, Belgian yeast, carbonation, bubblegum, and maybe some bitter hop presence, but I wouldn't say there is really any ancho chile noticeable on the aroma or taste.
M - The feel is very crisp and spritzy. Very carbonated, but it mellows as the beer sits. Very bready, dry, and sticky on the finish. Medium-full bodied with high carb. Very drinkable stuff, either way.
Overall, it's a nice red ale, and a poor chile beer, but I suppose it's right where I wanted it to be. Interesting enough, but simple and not overly unique or complex. Worth a try, but not something I would go out of my way for to have again.

This beer is just awe-inspiring. I had heard good tales told of Ommegang and its Belgian roots, but had never had the opportunity to try any of their offerings until I saw this at my local Total Wine. I was immediately intrigued at least by the novelty of a Game of Thrones inspired beer, but when I read that it was a Belgian style red ale with a good BA score and heard that it came highly recommended by the employee doing tastings of various other beers that day I knew I had to try it. This beer looks incredible. It pours an amazing dark ruby color and formed three or four fingers of fluffy white head that passed the rim of a large glass and did not even hint at disappearing until I myself drank the beer, which left gorgeous lacing all the way down. The taste was also something truly unique as it combined the malty profile of a very flavorful red ale with the unique taste of Belgian yeast, one of my favorite things about Belgian style beers. Altogether this is a truly unique beer which looks, feels, smells, and tastes incredible. Utterly beyond comparison.
