Abbey was Ommegang's first beer and was styled after Dubbels produced by Belgian Trappist monks. A deep, rich and malty ale, Abbey uses several Belgian specialty malts and spices resulting in a very aromatic, flavorful beer.
Deep burgundy in color, topped by a dense tan head, Abbey Ale is rich on the palate but with a dry finish. Suitable for cellaring, Abbey develops wonderful caramel, fig, and currant notes with age.

No sense equivocating, this beer is excellent! I find it a pleasure to enjoy such a fine brew, not too much of anything that disagrees with me, yet bold. Unashamedly bold! I see that this Ommegang Abbey Ale has been reviewed many times, and I hesitate to review one of our fine beverages that so many others have disected and nearly unanimously enjoyed, but this beer is special, a fine dubbel. The flavors have hints of so many real and imagined fine assets, banana, caramel, molasses, alcohol even citrus. It's all in there, waiting to be released and enjoyed. On any given day, this beer can deserve a 100 score, but that would be perfect, and until you try it I'll leave perfection at 98 and I would be happy to try again, and again, and again to find perfection, but Ommegang has found a close fly by to the magical elusive perfection.

12 ounce bottle poured into a Spiegelau wheat beer glass.

Cloudy copper brown pour with an ample khaki head. Foam is creamy and leaves a bit of lace. The nose is super malty and loaded with sweet indicating aromas of dried cherry, chocolate and dark sugars. The taste is more attenuated than the nose indicates but still malty, rich and a bit sweet, with candied sugars, chocolate malts, spices, and hints of herbal orange. Light medium in weight and pretty smooth, it has a light creaminess and becomes thicker feeling as it warms. Really enjoying this one.

Tastes like a nice Belgian Dubbel to me. I was hoping for stronger aroma, but the taste makes up for it. I was surprised to actually pick out a little licorice taste at first, but very subtle and blended in nicely as you go, along with the slight orange and the requisite fig and date flavor, which is what I love about Belgian Dubbels. Overall a very nice authentic tasting Dubbel Ale at a decent price. Well Done! Sign me up!

Pours a muddy copper with just over a finger of head. The nose is mildly funky and malty with a touch of raisin essence. The flavor follows the nose with a blast of malty sweetness followed by a long dry finish.

Why did it take so long for me to try Ommegang's cherry double.
a) Cherry, mahogany pour to form.
s) Up there with Chimay, Duval and co.
t) More cherry, more sweet, heart wood, shellac, cedar, spice, woodshop.
f) Never cloying, sweet but cleans up nicely, lovely, lively tongue feel.
o) Outstanding and next to Belgians

Solid copper appearance with a large tan head and good lacing. Malty aroma serves as a backdrop for an array of dark, ripe fruit. Complex taste rolling out notes of ripe fruit, licorice, seasonal spices and caramel. Alcohol a bit more noticeable in the aftertaste. Medium-to-full bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel leading to a dry, spicy finish.
