Poured on-tap in a flight at Haven Gastropub in Orange, Calif. Reviewed from notes.
A- Little white head with nice lacing. Walnut brown color. Nice clarity.
S- Brown sugar, caramel, some booze. Medium malts.
T- Vinous, brown sugar and booziness.
M- Vinous and light fizzy carbonation. Medium bodied and fairly wet.
O- Strange but very tasty.
Re-reviewing June 1, 2013. Poured from a standard pressure-cap 12 oz bottle into a New Belgium tulip glass at my apartment in high elevation Kalispell, Mont. Reviewed live.
A- Two-finger fluffy white head. Thick and long-lasting. Ruby-colored body that looks very attractive. Nice looking brew.
S- Slightly boozy, candi sugar, brown sugar. Caramel malts and a complex aroma.
T- Slight bit of oakenness, with a boozy backbone that fades into caramel and ruby malts. Weak here compared to the smell.
M- Medium-bodied and a wet, loose finish.
O- Much of my original review stands, although I have expanded upon it a bit. The look has improved by a point, the bottle just made the nice head. Smell is bumped up, possibly a nod to the tulip glass.

My dad passed away a couple of years ago. He was a very enthusiastic fellow about many things, one of which was fruitcake (yeah, I know). In the fruitcake family, at least the way he made it, was pecan whiskey cake. Even people who hate fruitcake loved his pecan whiskey cake. This beer reminds me of that cake - dark, dried fruity, accompanied by the pleasant presence of alcohol, etc.. Whenever I drink this beer, I think of my dad and his enthusiasm for making unusual desserts.

Deep brown with amber highlights and a slightly frothy ivory head.
Aroma is figgy, with notes of dates. Fairly sweet and bready, with candi sugar.
Fairly raisiny flavor, with light alcohol and a hint of burnt sugar, with a finish of menthol and light dryness. Slight sharp cherry notes are evident. Yeast character is somewhat spicy.
Body is full, with modest carbonation and noted alcohol heat.
Very raisin dominant flavor, with light sweetness and more bready notes. The finish is fairly dry. Alcohol is noticeable. Honestly, I expected more complexity.
