I have experienced this beer several times at tastings. This is my first 750 ml bottle tasting. I was not disapointed by the experience!

Two special notes: First, allow this beer to warm to at least 55F+ before tasting. Taste, Smell and Mouthfeel improve dramatically as it warms. Second, choose your glassware carefully. I started with the standard Ommegang chalice and quickly moved to a round wine glass (Duchesse de Bourgogne). The aromas from the wine glass were intoxicating and was the glassware of choice.

Appearance: Brownish red with ruby highlights. Light tan head that stayed with the highly carbonated brew for the entire tasting. Sparkling clarity. Held up to the light, this was a beautiful beer to behold.

Smell: This is beer was all about the aromas. I could not stop sticking my nose in the glass and going for more. The fruitiness was incredibly complex and improved dramatically as the beer warmed. Alcohol notes up front, quickly replaced by juicy fruit, caramel malts and dark fruits. The smell of this beer was its crowning glory.

Taste: The beer started and finished hoppy. The treasures were in the middle. Cloves, honey, raisins and sweet plums, fig and prune. Caramel and Special B malts rounded out the juicy sweetness. Finished metallic, especially when served colder. This took a back seat as the beer warmed. Metallic notes overtook the better qualities of the beer.

Mouthfeel: Prickly carbonation start. Soft and round in the middle, but surprisingly, not cloying. Incredible balance to this beer. Finished dry and BRUTish, very much champagne-like. Hops and metallic notes in the finish contributed to the dry ending of every sip.

Drinkability: Very kingly, sophisticated and worthy of praise. I look forward to pairing this beer with a meaty dinner or cheese plate. This was a real treat at a great price. I will be back for more.

Gorgeous, deep mahogany color with cherry hues when held to light. Pours a mountainous, foamy head that never lets up. Leaves behind patchy chunks of lacing.

Wonderful dark fruit aroma of figs and dates along with some burnt sugar. Solid, clove-like yeast character.

Smooth and sweet flavors of dark fruits and candy sugar. Hint of toasted almonds. Love the fresh, live yeast quality. Touch of herbal, spicy hop, just enough to balance. I can detect a hint of nutmeg in the finish along with lingering clove.

Medium to full bodied. High carbonation works well with the style. Pleasant grainy, yeasty texture.

Overall, a fantastic dubbel style ale. Complex and well balanced. Everything I could ask for.

Bottle poured into a pilsner glass

Pours a dark copper orange brown in color . Three finger white foam settles into a white bubble layer with good lacings.

Aroma is malty, deep rich plums, spices , licorice, orange and coriander

Taste of sweet malt , plums, spices, licorice, coriander, orange peel and alcohol

Medium and you can detect the alcohol in here.

Great beer. I'll definitely repeat and recommend you give it a try.

Had this beer in a corked bottle. 7/23/14.
Appearance:
Pours a really nice dark maroon color that won't give away the way it tastes right away. Head dissipates in a nice frothy fashion.

Aroma:
The nose is spicy and malty, you can definitely trace it back to the licorice, coriander, orange peel, and yeast.

Taste:
The taste consists of sweet malt then flavors of slight licorice, coriander, orange peel, spice, and yeast. The more you sip, the better it gets as your mouth gets used to the very slight metallic plum taste. Blends together perfectly.

Mouth Feel:
Medium bodied, even though the look doesn't give that away, nice dry finish. Alcohol is hidden very well.

Overall:
This beer is a very good example of the style, first Ommegang brew I've ever had. Very refreshing mouthfeel and a lot of underlying fruit characteristics that point to fig/plum and licorice. The orange peel and coriander hints balance it quite nicely.

Believe it or not this brew pairs perfectly with French Toast flavored Goldfish. Then again, that could just be the end of the beer getting to me.
