I am, frankly, surprised to see Ommegang (Dubbel) Abbey Ale generally rated so highly by BA reviewers. Don't get me wrong, it is a very good beer, but it fails to hit the mark as a Belgian dubbel in many respects. The color, the head, the lace on the glass are all fine, but the aroma is hot, syrupy sweet, and full of burned sugar. And so is the flavor. The dark roast is too much, IMHO for a dubbel, and the body/mouthfeel too full and sweet by far.
I think of a dubbel as a Belgian take on a doppelbock, and this beer is just too much doppelbock and not enough Belgian. I would like this beer to be drier, crisper, spicier. Lots of sugar and caramel flavors would be okay, but not so much sweetness. The body should be medium and dry, not heavy and syrupy. The nose should scream fruits and exotic malts, not roasty-toasty-espresso aromas.
The alcohol of a dubbel should add a slight hint of warmth at most. This beer is nearly up to winter-warmer status. If you like a rich, complex, alcoholic doppelbock, I think you'll enjoy Ommegang Abbey Ale. I do. But I'd rather be drinking a good abbey dubbel!

My dad passed away a couple of years ago. He was a very enthusiastic fellow about many things, one of which was fruitcake (yeah, I know). In the fruitcake family, at least the way he made it, was pecan whiskey cake. Even people who hate fruitcake loved his pecan whiskey cake. This beer reminds me of that cake - dark, dried fruity, accompanied by the pleasant presence of alcohol, etc.. Whenever I drink this beer, I think of my dad and his enthusiasm for making unusual desserts.

Deep brown with amber highlights and a slightly frothy ivory head.
Aroma is figgy, with notes of dates. Fairly sweet and bready, with candi sugar.
Fairly raisiny flavor, with light alcohol and a hint of burnt sugar, with a finish of menthol and light dryness. Slight sharp cherry notes are evident. Yeast character is somewhat spicy.
Body is full, with modest carbonation and noted alcohol heat.
Very raisin dominant flavor, with light sweetness and more bready notes. The finish is fairly dry. Alcohol is noticeable. Honestly, I expected more complexity.
