Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Chimay chalice.

Nice cherry brown color with a huge, foaming head that has great retention. Decent lacing.

Big, bold, and beautiful nose: malts galore, spicy notes with some pepper aroma, cloves, tons of Belgian yeasts which give it a fresh bread feel, candied fruits/citrus, and even some mild aged cheddar. Awesome. Who doesn't want fresh bread, fruits, and cheese?

See above: malts with caramel, mulled apple cider, and peppery cloves. There is some kick to this beer (spicy!) - not for the faint of heart.

Big carbonation in this dubbel - not everyone's taste, but it fits the style nicely. The bubbles also help keep the finish bone dry. For a 8.5% dubbel, you couldn't ask for a much cleaner finish.

This Abbey is banging - certainly among my favorite beers around. (I also said that about Rare Vos - coincidence?)

12 oz. bottle poured into a goblet.

Appearance - Great fluffy off-white head that lasts and lasts. Declines to an ever-changing layer of foam atop a murky reddish brown body. No lacing, but it still looks pretty nice.

Smell - Fruity and estery. Brighter fruits, like a cherry character, come through as much as the darker ones. Solid breadiness to it as well. Smells nice, although there's not much caramel to it.

Taste - The fruits and esters are amplified tremendously in the flavor followed by a very grainy malt flavor. It has a vinous characteristic to the finish that isn't all that pleasant. Finishes quite dry.

Mouthfeel - Really highly carbonated. Prevents me from tasting all of it as it's so tingly on the tongue. Extremely dry finish leaves a tannic flavor on the mouth.

Overall - I enjoyed the Pere Jacques a surprising amount and decided to revisit the Dubbel. I was once again somewhat disappointed by the style. It's still tasty, but never seems to be what I'm looking for out of a beer. Am I not drinking good dubbels or are they just not that good?

Poured from a brown 12 ounce bottle into an Ommegang glass. Produces a light brown and very fluffy head even from a very gentle pour which slowly fades to a very light foam covering.

Smells of bread and yeast, with a hint of dark ripe fruits. The smell of alcohol is also quite apparent.

Has a lighter than expected mouthfeel with a very fine, light and perfect carbonation. Tastes similar to how it smells (of course). The presence of belgian yeast is obvious. Also , the dark fruits are still showing through as well as a nice warming alcohol finish.

I alllowed this beer to warm before pouring, but not enough. As it warmed I enjoyed it more. In fact, initially I was going to score this beer a point lower for taste. Reminds me of Trois Pistoles from Unibroue with much more mild fruit flavors.

Highly recommended, just make sure to allow this beer to warm properly before enjoying.
