i do not feel qualified to go all the way in the overall here -- this is as good a Belgian Dubbel as i have had -- i think Chimay might be a tad smoother... but i am not doing a side by side test.

pours a deep rich amber with mild carbonation. the aroma is tart -- part sour part sweet, with an underpinning of alcohol. some malt aroma comes through, but more the sweet character that you might associate with fruit.

the taste follows the smell exactly here -- the drink is sour but complex, as deeper malt tones come out and more nuance to the sweet and sour flavor.

i prefer a slightly sturdier Ale feel, so would normally lean towards a straight ahead Dark Ale.... but this beer makes a fine autumn seasonal for me. this is what a harvest ale should be imho.

A: medium red-brown beer, frothy tan head

S: sweet, malt, fig/fruit, caramel

T: rich, malty, some dark fruit and vanilla notes

M: thin to medium bodied, lightly carbonated, no bad aftertaste

O: no wonder it's so well-liked - a truly delicious beer

pours a deep amber light brown color, with a two finger rocky head that retains for a long time. smells of candied fruit, licorice, alcohol and toffee and caramel on the back end. This beers been sitting on the shelf at my job for about a year now so i'm hoping that doesnt effect the taste too much. The biggest flavor I notice is toffee and caramel in the middle. Theres a semi bittersweet after taste lingering of dates, raisins and caramel. It's not as bad of an after taste as I assumed there would be judging it solely on smell. Very little biscuity sweetness up front with some raisins, and dark malts in the middle.

Pretty big bodied beer with a good amount of carbonation. A lot of flavors within this beer but oddly none are too overpowering (but that could just be the age of the beer toning them down a bit) The nose is a bit much and has some phenolic scents but the beer itself is calm and represents the style very well.

Definitely on the sweeter side but unlike most of the bigger maltier beers doesnt have that terrible sweet aftertaste that lingers for too long. Good beer.

a: beautiful beer. Dark brown. Thick head. Small bubbles floating to the top

s: fruit bouquet.

t: complex flavor. bready malts. molasses. caramel. bit of banana. some alcohol comes through too.

m: medium-full body. Initially well carbonated but seems to lessen as it warms

o: So much occurring within the aroma and taste. Alcohol is fairly present but it doesn't take away from the beer at all. Solid beer.

Poured into Leffe tulip from 750ml bottle.

A: Generous head appears right upon pouring which stays for several minutes. Lacing is luscious and inviting.

S: Strong Belgian yeast character, esters and phenols. Toffee and Belgian candi syrup.

T: Soft, dominated by the smooth yeast by-products, soft Belgian candi syrup and subtle background of sweet malts. Very pleasant dark sugar flavor. Hops only give a background level of bitterness. Very nicely balanced.

M: Velvety, low attenuation and low carbonation make this a slow but very pleasant sipping beer.

O: This might be pretty close to an ideal somewhat sweet and yeasty Dubbel. Hard to go wrong with this unless you like life sour and bitter.

a - very good looking. dark brown with a touch of red and translucent. the color almost matches the color on the BACK label of the bottle. a rough pour will make this beer fill the glass entirely with a cream colored head that lingers for a long time and leaves a TON of big-bubbled lacing. a beautiful beer for sure

s - dark bread and very sweet molasses aromas

t - matches smell with bit more of an alcohol bite. some nice toasted flavors going on. a bit of a bitter finish. a touch of metallic taste?

m - bubbly at first, and almost undercarbonated as it warms for a half hour. pretty thick, smooth feel. somewhere above medium, though not quite heavy feel

o - very tasty. it is not overly complex, heavy, alcoholic, sweet or bitter. overall a well balanced dubbel! i like some dubbels better than this, but i do like this one more than a lot of others
