Poured into a brandy snifter from a bomber.

A: Deep ruby red-brown. dark. Medium haze. Deep and intruiging. Nice head and some lacing that falls off slowly. Has a tiny hint of legs if swirled after carbonation disappears (which takes quite some time).

S: This is where I get lost. There's nothing overpowering, nor empowering. It's got a tiny bit of sweet malt, tiny bit of yeast, hint o' dark cherry, sour apple and fleeting, minor booziness. There's just nothing strongly standing out whatsoever except some unripened fruit smells. When it warms, it releases some additional fruit notes, but that's it.

T: actually, it's rather carbonated at first, so it hides how really sweet-malty and medium bodied the bulk of the rest of it is. It really is a chameleon. At first it seems light and lively, then it gets heavier and more balanced as it warms and releases the carbonation.

M: as mentioned, it's fizzy at first. Settles into coating, sweet and unripened fruit. Creamy, satisfying and very warming at the end of a snifter full.

D: For a dubbel, it's certainly smooth enough to have too many, not regarding the ABV "warning" :)

Overall, a very impressive beer that I would never turn down. The only drawback is the lack of nose, but the rest of it makes up for that for sure.

750ml bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pouring according to the elaborate instructions printed on the label yields a 3/4 inch dark off-white, pillowy/fizzy head that dissipates slowly leaving walls of lacing. Color is semi-translucent ruby red. Beer itself leaves a few streaks of lacing.

Smell: Belgian yeast, cherry, plum, with some grassiness. Relatively sweet aroma, eventually turning a little pungent.

Taste: First sip: Belgian yeast, huge carbonation, some musty funk, and a sour finish. Not too inviting, but not bad. Rich and sweet up front, gradually giving way to mustiness, cherry, some plum/prune, and a sourness/tartness at the end that doesn't recede much until the alcohol gets overwhelmingly hot (which happens pretty quickly). Distinctive Belgian yeast characteristics kind of drop out early on, but there's a constant rich, sugary flavor present. Tastes quite different than it smells, despite the cherry/dark fruit presence. Has some red wine characteristics.

The taste is predominantly tart and musty, but some interesting things do come out as the beer warms (along with a giant alcohol presence). Some apple cider type flavor comes out, and the cherry, various esters, and rich malt provide some diversity. All told, it's mainly huge alcohol, more funk and tartness than one would expect from a dubbel, and some nice fruity and sugary notes.

Mouthfeel: Juicy and cidery. Medium bodied. Ultimately moderately carbonated.

Drinkability: I liked it more and more as I got through the bottle, but given the alternatives (Chimay, St. Bernardus, Maredsous, Allagash, etc) it's not a very good dubbel, and it's way too hot. If I were in the same situation as I was when I bought it (at a store with small, relatively bad selection, and in the mood for some Belgian beer with Ommegang Abbey Ale the only choice), I would buy it again without any qualms really.

This is a very imperfect, not particularly well-done beer. Overall it tastes good, but it has some glaring flaws and an occasionally unpleasant flavor. For $6 it's not bad, but even on a budget I'd usually go for Unibroue or the lower end Allagash beers over this (or just drop a couple dollars more for a far superior import).

Presents a deep, rich mahogany, slightly red around the edges with big, brown foamy head. Head has excellent retention, with seemingly endless bubbles supplying it. Nose seems very complex, hard to describe. One note that sticks out is the alcohol. Very prominent in the nose. The alcohol is also
dominant in the taste, with a nice, rich earthy flavor following up. Feel on this one is pleasant. Lively carbonation and a slick mouthfeel score this one above average on the drinkablity scale.

I don't drink enough Ommegang and it's nobody's fault but mine.

Mahogany color with a huge fountainous foamy head: really, this bottle is a foam factory. Thick foamy retention, thick sea foam lacing, foam, foam, foam.

It's been said that truly good Belgian ales have flavors and aromas that mesh together indistinguishably into a single entity where the sum is better than all the parts. Abbey ale does a great job of doing just that. I can pick out some things but it's hard to pick out where each flavor end scent ends and the next begins. I like that.

Dark fruity aroma with an underlying molasses-like dark sugar. Annis and pumpernickel in there as well. Taste similarly hints and suggests without ever really exposing or displaying anything. I get some anise, dark, bitter chocolate covered raisins but with more of an earthy tone, like some one threw in some vineyard and farm dirt in the beer along with the raisin and cocoa. Steely caramel. The alcohol flexes it's muscles a little bit in back accompanied by black pepper and a course, grainy and highly effervescent carbonation.

Though not my ideal take on the style but I know a good dubbel when I get one. Farrmhouse-y and very traditional, I would have believed it came from Belgium rather than New York. At less than $6 a bomber I could see where this is popular with the follks.

Poured from a 750 into my St. Bernardus Goblet. The color is a dark rust brown with a red-brown head that is quite large. It recedes with time, although there is still some sticking around even after about 30 minutes. Lacing left behind.

The smell is quite fruity. There are many esters of dark fruit: raisins, dates and the like, along with cherries. Also lots of malt and a bit of alcohol.

The taste is very complex and delicious. Quite fruity up front, followed by malt and a lovely sweetness, followed by some caramelization and a dry, slight hop finish.

The mouthfeel is rich and creamy. Carbonation definitely contributes rather than outdoes the creamy texture. Finishes dry.

A great beer. Definitely one to age if you have the space, as it is good to drink now and will only improve with time.

I've been holding on to this for a long time, and not for any particular reason. Bottled in 2008, in my cellar since February of 2009.

Pours a semi clear reddish brown color, with a light tan head sitting on top. It has good retention but lacing is lacking a little.

The nose is malty and fruity, pretty nice actually. I get apples and raisins, as well as a nice belgian maltiness and yeast character.

The taste is just like the nose, fruity and malty, with a nice spiciness to it as well. Pretty much everything you would hope a Dubbel would be. Good tasting stuff.

The mouthfeel is about medium in body, with a rather high carbonatoin. Drinkability is pretty good, it doesn't drink like an 8.5% brew at all.

Overall, pleasantly surprised with this one. I can see how this has improved over the fresh version, as it's mellowed nicely and has a good fruitiness to it. Good stuff.

Poured a 750 mL bottle into an oversized red wine glass to capture the aroma.
A: Mahogany with grapefruit hues. It poured with a dense cream head that died to a good film and lace.
S: Prunes and raisins in a sweet, musty bread. The alcohol comes off as red wine and the hops are slightly piney.
T: Very sweet, with mixed berries, cherry, and slightly piney hops over the typical musty, earthy Belgian malts.
M: Mildly syrupy with a very frothy carbonation.
D: Great for the 8.5% ABV.

A: An opaque reddish/brown with a tan head.

S: Smells very fruity. More specifically, something like raisins or currants that mix with the yeasty smells.

T: Very rich and fruity with a spiciness at the end. Slightly sour, with the raisin and dried fruit notes coming through in the taste as well. I must still be getting my palate into Belgian brews-the tastes never quite wow me like I expect them to. I guess I'll just have to keep trying!

M: Sticky and syrupy, with prickly carbonation.

D: A very rich brew far better suited for savoring; though I easily made it through my two glasses. I may have even been game for another!

Pours a dark cloudy brown color with a nice cap of cream colored head. Held up to the light it takes on a rust colored hue.

Has a pronounced rasin/prune scent to the beer. The taste is dark malts, fruit, and an alcohol burn. Surprisingly easy to take down, goes down smoothly with no adverse after taste.

Poured from a Growler filled on 3/7.

Appearance: Deep dark reddish brown color with perfect clarity poured into my duvel glass. Nice amber sort of color with a huge 3 finger head that is slightly orange/red with huge lacing and great retention.

Smell: Smells like rich cherries, blueberries and a touch of honey on the back end. Slight esters of alcohol and cherry juice come through. Malt profile is very abundant with a big dose of honey like sweetness.

Taste: Caramalized bananas, cherry, raspberry and blueberry topped with a coffe cake like sweetness that finishes dry and crisp. Red apple peel comes through on the back end. Good crisp acidity balanced with a big sweet malt profile.

Mouthfeel: Very nice carbonation and smooth texture. Velvet on the palate with a nice crisp and dry finish. Sweet and slightly cloying but balanced by the finish.

Drinkability: Great dubbel. Alchol is evident as it warms but its contained well. Great balance and drinks like a nice full bodied cabernet. Would pair with pot roast, steak and anything that needs a big bold beer to stand up to it.

Pours out a dirty brown color with a frothy head.

Smells really nice- mostly of belgian spice and maybe banana.

The taste is of banana bread and belgian spice with a touch of sweet cherries in the back. Balanced with some hops though as it is definitely not too sweet, though flavorful. Very complex flavor. Almost too carbonated though.

Mouthfeel is nice but again too carbonated for my taste- almost soda-ish in that respect.

Totally drinkable and unbelievably so when you consider the 8.5% ABV. No hint or taste of alcohol warmth. Still it is a belgian so expect sweetness, which can tire most palletes after a few.

Shortcomings considered, this is a great Belgian Dubbel. Ommegang makes really good belgian style beers at typically affordable craft beer prices. This is one of my favorites of theirs.

This beer pours a dark garnet color with a good amount of haziness from the yeast and just tons of carbonation rushing to the top of the beer. The head is off white and about one and a half fingers high and resilient. It hasn't gone down at all yet, thick and fluffy. The smell is yeasty, duh, but with...lots of mellow fruit flavors, like ripe banana and a scent of orange is strong here too. The nose on this is weak or my nostrils are failing, the latter more likely.

Glug glug glug

Tastes like a mess, in a way. That's not horrible but I'm having trouble picking out new flavors. An orange taste is followed by something that's like over ripe banana and barnyard funk, and also a spice and tart layer underneath all this. Cherries seem to be pretty strong at the first hit or flavor, but subside as the profile lingers. There is also a bit of sherry red wine, but it's real slight. That being said the booze is untraceable in this which I really like. The mouth feel is full enough, I know what I'm drinking is far from watery. I want to say I also taste tea and something very like lemon as well. This is a beer that comes into focus as I continue with it; the malt contains caramel and chocolate without being overt with either of those flavors. Overall an awesome flavor experience.

Rich, and nice US dubbel.

Presentation: 750 ml corked bottle. Classic and simple, almost heraldic, label design. Brief side paragraph notes serving, Belgium servitude, and "Duvel" affiliation. Opposite side narrative notes naming inspiration, main characteristics, and cultural references. Notes date of bottling (10/07/09), Best By (10/2012), Alc. by Vol. (8.5%), and serving temp. Poured into a tulip glass.

A - Ruby brown pour, with a very rich light brown frothy head, fair retention, and nice lacing throughout.

S - Belgium yeast notes, fruity, spicy and a bit sweet.

T - Follows and expands aromas with sweet dark fruit notes, a hefty yeast character, spice, anise...

M - Medium to full body, with generous carbonation and a hefty and somewhat boozy sense to it.

D - Easy and pleasing to drink.

Notes: It had been a while since I had it and I was looking forward to the repeat. Back in my early days in the country this was among those that made me want to explore and appreciate US craft beer, the Belgium connect at that time was of great support, not so much anymore... But that is me, while I may not seek it on a regular basis it remains pretty solid and recommendable. Nice to have it around.

12oz bottle, I see best by on the label but no date.

Appearance: Poured into chalice. Crazy amount for carbonation. Thick tan head. Nice lacing.

Smell: Very subtle, but dried fruit, candy sugar, chocolate, toffee, and vanilla.

Taste: Rich bready yeast. Caramelized raisins, with a slight toffee that finishes pretty dry with a sweet alcohol to warm you up.

Mouthfeel: Very creamy up front with good amount of carbonation to tickle your tongue.

Drinkability: Great beer for the price. Great introduction into Dubbel style. It is amazing how well it hides the 8.5%ABV.

A: Pours a very deep dark amber color with a large khaki colored head that has some real staying power. Good looking brew

S: Sugary, dark fruit, cherry along with some yeasty spice and malt.

T: A little bit on the tip of the tongue followed with a rush of cherry/dark fruit and malt and finishes with a dry spiciness.

M: Body is medium and carbonation is good.

D: Pretty smooth drinker. Not my favorite style to drink but I am enjoying this one.

A - pours a creamy cloudy brown with a reddish hue. Very little head. Just a slender foam ring around the glass. Not that much lacing.

S - big complex aromas of cherries, caramel, coriander, yeast, and a little booze.

T - lots of cherries. A nice spicyness comes through in the middle and has a lingering mild boozey finish.

M - creamy smooth medium bodied and lower carbonation.

D - for a beer this strong the alcohol is well hidden and mighty tastey. I normally don't score higher abv high in this area but this one was just so good.

A: Pours a cloudy dark brown color with ruby tones. Leaves a thick off white head that leaves heavy lacing down the glass. Nice looking beer.

S: Belgian yeast, ripe dark fruit and sweet toasted malt. Brown sugar and candied figs.

T: Belgian yeast and sweet carmel malt that gives way to carmel and brown sugar. Ripe figs and dark cherries are also present. Some nutty elements as well that reminds me of toasted almonds. Light alcohol as it finishes.

M: Medium to full bodied and smooth. Carbonation tickles your mouth and finishes dry.

D: I really enjoyed this dubbel. Robust and packed with flavor, yet still highly drinkable. Another great offering from Ommegang.

Pours a clearish auburn brown with one-finger head that gives a slight bubbly head that sticks around. A great smell that is typical of great Belgians as it has an orange fruit smell, hints of yeasty breadiness and some caramel sugary sweetness. Taste follows as this thicker, chewier beer is full of sweet sugary malts, a lingering yeast note that keeps it balance and even lends itself to a slightly dry backbite. Has some fruity citric notes in there along with some spicy clove to furthur enhance the beer (the fruit tastes even have a little juicy grape/apple note and a tad tart edge). Classic dubbel.

A - has an opaque dark brown color that is a little off. Its like the color of brown sugar.

S - mildly boozy, sugary like sugar cane, candy, dried fig, dried dates, raisin, and minor notes of melon and strawberry in the background.

T - those dried figs and dates, and raisin but refreshing and crisp. minor notes of Peach? Turbinado sugar and subtle maple syrup. That refreshing quality must come from a fruitiness in this ale.

M - medium bodied with prickly carbonation.

D - gulping and hearty!

Second week in a row that I've bought this beer. Its in my top three of Belgian ales.

Haven't had this in a while -- actually surprised I haven't reviewed this already. Pours amber with a decent off-white head and crazy carbonation. Good spotted lacing on the sides of the pint.

Fruity aromas, with some hop leaf notes (you have to dig them out). There's plenty there.

Terrific flavor in this one. Some toasted malt, but big sweet/tart fruit with some yeast and light bitter bite fighting through. A bit boozy, but well hiden by other flavor elements. Cleaner finish than I expected. Really really drinkable beer here. Right amount of flavor and body (medium with solid carbonation), with no off flavors. Fantastic and so accessible. A must to try.

A-poured into a Ommegang goblet. About an inch or so of head, a very dark cloudy amber brown.

S-malty and sweet

T+M-Mild carbonation, a rich malty taste is most present, aftertaste is somewhat sweet

This was a beer that was on a friends "To Drink" list:

Color: This beer was a deep copper bordering on garnet. Thick head that dissipated very slowly, leaving a thin layer of lace on glass.

Smell: Very malty, almost syrupy, with fig overtones. Slight spice but mostly fruity. Pretty aromatic.

Taste: Tart at first, malty. Then notes of the fruityness, a bit of spice to round out and enhance. Aftertaste was a bit sour but delicious syrup( excuse me for mentioning but the afterburp was true to fruit form, figs and I love them).

Mouthful: Was a bit carbonated, but quickly gave way to sweetness.

Drinkablility: Was okay on its own, not something I would pick up. I did pair this with a pork dish (website to follow) and salad and was very much to my liking. That is how I would recommend this beer with a meal.

Ommegang Brewery recommended a hearty meat dish with this beer, preferably French, so I found a "Pork Chops with Mustard and Cream Recipe" (thanks to foodnetwork.com), very tasty. I modified a little, email me for my substitutions, happy to respond.

A- Murky copper with a light tan head. Head is pretty big and dissipates slowly.

S- Yeast, lots of malt, syrupy smelling (for lack of a better term), very slight hops presence in the nose.

T- Slight hops taste up front with a big malt backbone. Sweet, but not overly so.

M- Very low on carbonation to the point the it almost makes it a little watery. The low point on an otherwise very good beer.

D- Overall very good. For the price it's hard to beat.

A: Thin and very dark. I can barely see through it. Guess I would describe it as copper. Nothing really stands out here.

S: Sweet bready malty with some grape. If I sniff real deep I almost get grape juice. Fig and plum is also present.

T: I get quite a bit of tanginess up front. The grape juice quality carries over. Wish I hadn't chilled it so much. If it warms before I am done I will edit a bit. Has a sweet biscuity quality. I do remember last time I had it. It was bursting with flavor. The fig is still quite prevalent.

M: Maybe a little too over carbonated and there seems to be a lot of alcohol warmth. That is something you usually get in the Quads but not the Dubbels. Not bad but not great either.

D: Drinkability is on par with others of it's kind. But Dubbels just don't seem to have that overly drinkable quality and the alcohol warmth takes away from this one.

Ommegang Abbey Ale pours a burgundy hue with a thick layer of tan head that leaves a thin lace down the glass. The aroma is a combination of caramel/brown sugar sweetness, notes of alcohol, and dark fruits.

Taste is fruity with bits of spice and caramel sweetness. The alcohol is not as prevalent as I expected, and there is a dry bitterness in the finish.

Medium-heavy mouthfeel with an ample amount of carbonation. Good drinkability.
