Notes/Commercial Description:
Witte is our version of the classic Belgian wit or "white" ale. Witte, which is actually Flemish for white, is brewed with malted and unmalted wheat, orange peel, and coriander - offering a refreshing style that showcases the Belgian talent for brewing full-flavored ales that are also light and balanced. It is pale straw in color, slightly hazy from the yeast, and topped with a huge white, fluffy head.

Witte is pleasantly light on the tongue, balanced between malt and wheat sweetness. Hops and spice with a subtle clove note backed by flavors of lemon and sweet orange give way to a dry, crisp, refreshing finish.

Appearance: Yellowish Gold. Hazy banana colored. Very good retention on a super white head.

Aroma: Nice aroma. Clove and spice first, banana second with hints of citrus fruit. Nicely sweet. Not quite sickly sweet, but the sweetness is predominant.

Taste: A bit sour upfront. Finish is smooth, the sourness lingers slightly in the finish. Banana and spicing balances the sweetness. Citrus bitterness is present as well. Mouthfeel is not quite as full as other wits that I've had. The finish is slightly dryer than others in the category too. The dryness is actually very pleasant.

Notes: Nice wit from a solid brewery. Good example of how beers in this style can differ slightly.

Served on-tap in a Shaker pint glass at Hotel Indigo (Albany, NY).

A: Slightly hazy yellow with soft 1/2-finer white big-bubbled head with decent retention and a collar of lacing.

S: Very lemony citrus enhanced with a moderately strong clove note and some orange peel, although it is overshadowed by the lemon. The coriander and esters are kind of lost with all the citrus.

T: The flavor is fine but doesn't have the esters of some of the finest examples of this style. The lemon citrus again takes over most of the flavor profile, punctuated by clove and a bit of peppery spiciness, and finished with a fairly severe tartness. There is some herbal and citrus, grassy hopping. None of the more interesting fruity esters are in there, so it comes off as a very lemony wheat ale.

M: The over-light body doesn't help and accentuates the tart character of the finish. While it isn't astringent, it is far from smooth, although it does have reasonably low carbonation.

O: Not a terrible beer, but it is not the type of witbier I enjoy -- more along the lines of Allagash White with a less citrus-enhanced, traditional wheat and spiced flavor with prominent but controlled esters. This brings a little bit of tanginess from the wheat but none of those other components in a too light body.

A- Very pale yellow body with a hint of haze to it. Lots of carbonation bubbles rising through the body. Huge, foamy white head.

S- Wheat, lemon, banana, bubble gum, some fresh grass.

T- Similar to the aroma. Wheat comes through along with the lemon presence, some banana and bubble gum. Some tartness on the finish.

M- Light, crisp, quenching, medium-high carbonation with that little bit of tartness that lingers behind.

O- A well crafted wheat beer that is light and refreshing.

Appearance - Pours a clear pale straw with two fingers of bubbly white head.

Smell - Orange peel, coriander, Belgian yeast, clove, wheat, fruity esters, bready malts.

Taste - Very similar to what the aromas suggest. All the flavours are fairly in balance and there's a tiny amount of tartness.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate-to-high carbonation. Dry finish.

Overall - An easy-to-drink wit with all the traditional flavours in place. Hits the mark on the style, but doesn't really do anything to set itself apart.
