Batch #2, from March '08. Pours a very hazy dark gold, with a nice amount of cream colored head that goes away pretty quickly, leaving a light residue on top and around the edges. Some lacing sticks around the sides, but not much. Looks, in a word, yeasty.
Smells... kinda like hennepin! Lots or orange and lemon zest, very citrusy, slightly sweet. A bit of tart green apple. And lots of breadyness. Yes, it does have a funk, but I don't find it displeasing. A sweet maltyness balances the funk out. The nose alone kind of makes me hungry for something bready and greasy. Every time I sniff, I get something different. Quite complex.
The taste is a lot more subtle than I anticipated, considering the complexity of the nose. There's a light hoppy bite that finally comes through, followed by delicate citrus flavors, then some sweet maltyness, and finally finishes with the more bitter side of the hops and a bit of heavyness from a bready, toasted taste. It's a pretty clean finish. And no funk at all detected. MUCH lighter than I ever would have thought.
Mouthfeel is sudsy and light, not full bodied as expected. It's not thin or watery, but it's nowhere near heavy or full. It's really nice though.
Overall this is a tasty, refreshing, complex brew. I like it quite a bit. The price is pretty steep at 12 bucks, certainly not gonna have a bunch lying around, but for a celebration, or something super tasty now and again? Yeah, pick this one up.
