Taken from notes from 9/28/10
Poured from a 750ml corked and caged bottle into an Ommegang flute.
After opening the neat cage and cork opening, we were greeted with a nice carbonation and smell right out of the bottle. My roommate got first pour and he was greeted with half foam, half beer. I took it a bit more carefully and got a very nice head. The consistency is very heavy; as it was pouring it seemed more like melted chocolate than beer. It looked delicious though.
This beer has a nice bouquet, but is a bit similar to other chocolate stouts I've had (Young's Double Chocolate immediately comes to mind). Initial fragrances consist of light chocolate, and then a rush of coffee and malts. As a big coffee fan, this beer had my mouth watering.
The head on this baby last forever as well. My first couple sips I had about a quarter head in each gulp. Of course, this only made it taste better. The beer feels soft in the mouth, but as mentioned before a bit heavy. Taste consists highly of coffee and bitter chocolate. These two flavors mixed with a slight alcohol bite at the end makes for a great tasting beer, but one that I could only have a few of before moving on to something else. It is a delicious beer, but too heavy for my taste for only 7% alcohol. I realize it's a stout / heavy ale, but still.
This would make a beautiful dessert beer and looks great. The presentation in the pour, head retention, smell, and lacing makes it stand it in awe. The beer is still lacing from where I first built the end even after being finished with my glass.
Overall, it's a great beer, but probably my least favorite of my Ommegang samples so far. I'm not saying that's a bad beer, but for a beer of this price and reputation, I was expecting it to differentiate itself a little more.

Appearance: deep dark brown-red. Nice plush tan head on the pour.
Smell: bright Belgian characteristics are up front. Darker chocolate notes in the background. Maybe that will change as it warms.
Taste: much like the nose, though the chocolate and Belgian notes are more evenly balanced.
Overall: good beer, not great.

Stout? It is not a stout. Does not appear to be a stout. Does not smell like a stout. Feels okay enough to be a stout. Something is missing though... Oh right. The chocolate and stout part of the Chocolate Indulgence Stout. Only indulging in really okay non-stout
