Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Initial pour is basic brown with a touch of red or amber mixed in. The brew is not clear, but it's hard to tell if it's hazy or just really dark. The foam that rises to the top is pretty light; sort of a a stack of off-white bubbles as opposed to a foamy head. Lacing is extremely light.
Big time roasty malts on the nose and not much else. It's a pleasant sort of aroma, not overbearing but certainly not very diverse.
Taste very much mirrors the smell. Fairly sweet and malty, mostly characteristic of the style, but there isn't much of that 'peat' flavor on the back side. Nothing in the way of smoke either. The malt is typical and seems to go well with rest of the brew but it is definitely the star of the brew.
Overall I did enjoy the brew. I might have had my standards set a bit high because of the quality that I have come to expect from Ommegang. The obvious Belgian yeast in this brew was interesting but almost served as a distraction from the style. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I think I prefer the traditional Scottish ale to this one.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/2/2010. Pours lightly hazy dark brick red color with a nice 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big molasses, raisin, toffee, toast, caramel, chocolate, pepper, earth, clove, floral, and yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity. Taste of raisin, pear, molasses, toffee, toast, chocolate, biscuit, caramel, nuttiness, pepper, earth, floral, and yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of raisin, molasses, toffee, toast, chocolate, nuttiness, pepper, and earth on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity and balance of flavors that are nicely robust; zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with almost zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent scotch ale with a Belgian twist. Very well balanced, robust, and complex; very smooth to sip on. Really enjoyed this one. Glad I was finally able to try it.
