This brew pours a deep ruby red color that also looks peat brown when not held to light. There was one finger of a grayish white head that faded quickly. The smell is malty sweet, with a kind of smoky tree like smell, but any plant smell is faint.

The flavor is complex...softly bitter edge is followed by mellow smokiness and a light herbal plantiness. The yeast gives this beer amazing body I feel. It's heavy without being too thick, full bodied and light. A flowery lightness also rides in on the palate. Pretty drinkable for its style and abv, which isn't too high but enough that you can feel it happen. A great beer.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/2/2010. Pours lightly hazy dark brick red color with a nice 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big molasses, raisin, toffee, toast, caramel, chocolate, pepper, earth, clove, floral, and yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity. Taste of raisin, pear, molasses, toffee, toast, chocolate, biscuit, caramel, nuttiness, pepper, earth, floral, and yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of raisin, molasses, toffee, toast, chocolate, nuttiness, pepper, and earth on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity and balance of flavors that are nicely robust; zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with almost zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent scotch ale with a Belgian twist. Very well balanced, robust, and complex; very smooth to sip on. Really enjoyed this one. Glad I was finally able to try it.
