Appearance: Pours a clear reddish brown, with a lively one-finger head that sticks around and leaves nice lacing.
Smell: Toasted malt on the nose, together with biscuit and just the faintest hint of heather notes. In other words, it tastes Scottish.
Taste: This is where it gets more interesting. Most of the elements of a traditional wee heavy are present in one way or another - malt sweetness shoulders most of the load, with the hops lurking mostly in the background. However, the spiciness of what I assume must be one of Ommegang's Belgian yeasts adds an entirely new dimension, and in fact comes close to dominating the taste. This effect intensifies as the beer warms; it seems to move from being primarily a Scottish brew to primarily a Belgian brew.
Mouthfeel: Slightly lighter on the tongue than a traditional wee heavy.
Drinkability: This is a complex beer and, even at a relatively modest ABV, should be a sipper.
