"Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

--Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Haystack gold with fine showers of yeast and multiple streams of unhurried bubbles that are plinking into the underside of a three finger chunk of alabaster colored whipped cream. The entire package isn't quite Belgianesque, but it'll do.

The aroma is solid and is pretty much indistinguishable from a true Belgian tripel. Ripe pears and apples with an intriguing peppery spiciness is the Cliff's Notes version. This should be damn good beer.

If the Belgians aren't sticklers with respect to adding all sorts of things to their ales, why should we be? That said, the best tripels, in my humble opinion, are those that rely on yeast esters for their flavor profiles rather than on added spices. This offering uses spices, although Ommegang won't tell us what they are.

Okay, okay, but how does the beer taste? Good. Maybe even very good. But not great. What the hell, good-to-very-good is good enough for me. One slight negative before we get to the positives: the alcohol could be masked a wee bit better.

Tripel Perfection tastes like a high-powered version of an especially estery tripel. Flavor intensity is definitely not an issue. Specifics include golden orchard fruit (mostly pears) soaked in Poire Williams and sprinkled with clove, coriander and white pepper. As in American IPAs, aggressiveness in beer of this style is almost always a positive.

It's getting harder and harder to deny this brew the 4.5 as I get further and further into the bottle. Keep in mind that tripels are my favorite Belgian and Belgian-style beers. The mouthfeel is another highlight and can stand toe-to-toe with most of the world's best. Lush and creamy and perfectly bubbled and... what more is there?

Tripel Perfection, while far from perfect, is delicious beer that is well worth the purchase price for Belgianophiles (like me). This is one time in which my long-held belief that Brewery Ommegang is a poor man's Allagash doesn't necessarily hold true.

Appearance: cloudy, pale orange body with a good sized, off-white frothy head; long lasting and good lacing; very effervescent

Smell: pale malts; citrus; belgian yeasts; coriander

Taste: very nice! Big hit of citrus right off the bat with spices and yeast; juicy malts lead quickly into a good hop bite; finishes semi-sweet with a slight bit of hops lingering

Mouthfeel: slightly creamy, but with a good amount of carbonation

Remarks: Delicious. Bought in a big bottle 3 pack with Ommegang glass for under $10 at Sam's Club. What a deal!

On tap poured into a snifter

Hazy yellow with a generous white foam cap and nice lacings.

Aroma of orange, coriander, herbs and sweet malt.

Full mouthfeel with plenty of active carbonation. Hint of alcohol

Good tripel worth repeating, two or three more times..

Solid gold in color and a bit hazy. A prodigious head forms and lasts for ages. Very nice lacing. Yeast and spice notes are dominant on the nose. Clove, coriander, and, more subtly, some dried orange peel. Nice, bright aroma with just a subtle hint of alcohol

Malty sweet flavor with just enough hop bitterness for balance. Kind of a dull finish. Fruity and malty with some candi sugar I think. Golden raisin, white grapes, and herbal hops are what I'm getting. Full in body with alcohol warmth but no solvent-like fusel notes. Very well carbonated but soft and sudsy.

This is a really good traditional tripel that does nothing wrong. Highly recommended.

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: Nice golden color, fluffy white head, leaves good lacing

Smell: Sweet fruity malts, Ommegang yeast character, a little bit of spice

Taste: Again, sweet fruity malts up front with the signature Ommegang yeast character. Some spice, coriander, clove

Mouthfeel: Medium body, full champagne-like carbonation, semi-dry finish

Overall: A fantastic take on the classic Tripel style from a favorite brewer of mine. The shift up in price for Ommegang means I'm not buying as much, but I'm glad I picked up the holiday 3 pack for a price I'm used to.
