This is a great way to start your Belgian beer tour. Why start with Stella? In fact, don't. This NY beer is probably closer to the real Belgian beer taste than Stella has ever tried to be.

To start, Ommegang Rare VOS has a beautiful amber color, setting the stage for the full flavor that will follow. The nose is typical Belgian, which is a good thing, as you know you want to drink this. So to the taste... I love a full flavored beer, and as this is a pale ale, my expectations weren't too high. But forget expectations. This is not some great IPA (my favorite), but this IS a great beer. Will I get it again? Yes! Full flavor, great nose, lots of color and can you believe it is made in the USA?

Yeah, this is a good one.

Appearance: Poured into 12 oz tall Belgian chalice. Brilliant, bright amber. Medium-high carbonation. Luxurious, 3 finger whipped egg-white like head.

Smell: Bubble gum, clementine, honey

Taste: Complex soft citrus notes, bubble gum, orange, yellow and clear gummi bears, grains of paradise mixed in with a late, high AA hop edition

Mouthfeel: Low to medium body, a little sweet - not ultra crisp, not ultra silky - just "in the middle" - light spritz feeling without being as carbed as a Saison

Overall: My favorite Ommegang brew. I followed their pairing directions and have had it with pub food - pizza, wings, side of fries or onion rings - it really is a easy drinking, medium alcohol beer that is great at home or out at your favorite bar or restaurant. A nice introductory Belgian for newcomers to the various Belgian styles. The women in my family love this as well - a beer for everyone really and ranks in my top 10 favorite, ever.

Appearance: A beautiful amber that somehow reminds me of a hazy gold. I'm not sure how else to explain it, and im sure not many other people would see it like that.

smell: the ever delightful belgian funk, sweet florals, and a bit of orange.

taste: a surprising bitterness runs through right after the top is popped and you take the first sip at fridge temperature, but when let sit and warmed a pleasant sweetness takes hold of the bitterness and blends nicely together. More belgian funk (in a fantastic way), and even a slight wheat flavor comes through.

Mouthfeel: light and fluffy. light bodied with good carbonation and no lingering feeling on the tongue.

overall: another treat from ommegang

Golden-hued, with an orange cast. The frothy head fades fairly quickly. The nose, concentrated in a 12-oz. tulip, is of toffee, citrus, and pepper, satisfyingly affirmed by the taste. The beer is refreshingly prickly on the palate. This sophisticated blend of flavors, combined with a relatively modest ABV, makes for a noteworthy thirst-quencher, and an able accompaniment to a piquant meal.

Hazy golden colour with a small white head. Fair at best head retention.

Clove and banana dominates. The Belgian/German yeast aroma is what you get here. I quite like the overall picture.

A moderate body and medium fizziness. Intense but not well regarded

This is a good beer. The Belgian note are prominent and the flavours work. A really sid beer.
