750ml bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.
A: Golden in color, displays great clarity. A towering three fingers of white head retains wonderfully. A blanket of sticky lacing is left behind as the beer is consumed.
S: Very yeasty and complex. Musty and chalky. Soft white pepper, clove, spice. Pleasant malt base is bready and biscuity- undoubtedly pilsner malt, among others. Hops are herbal and spicy with a hint of lemon zest. Alcohol is stealthily hidden. Faint whiffs of pineapple and tropical esters. Great balance and awesome depth on the nose.
T: Yeasty, as in the nose. Chalk and spice. Has a bit of that musty cellar taste. White pepper and just a faint hint of clove. A touch starchy. Slightly medicinal, but in a good way. Bready and biscuity malt base. Hops fit in nicely too with a slight balancing bitterness and some spicy/herbal tastes and a faint spritz of lemon. Pineapple, apricot, orange, and other tropical esters come toward the back end, and the alcohol knocks gently to announce its presence without alarming anyone. The finish is bready and yeasty, caressing the palate gently as if rocking it to sleep.
M: Medium bodied, though it feels even lighter. Luscious and delectably creamy. Slight prickling carbonation. Far too drinkable for its own good at 9.5% abv. A warmth in the swallow is the only clue to its strength. Defines what it is for a beer to be smooth.
O: This is one of the best and most memorable Belgian golden ales I've ever had. Supremely balanced, with the malt, hops, and yeast contributing equally. A melt-in-your-mouth creamy and smooth feel propels drinkability through the roof. It has that great dichotomy of being simply pleasing yet still complex and contemplative. If there's a heaven, this is the type of beer I imagine they'd be drinking up there.

Always been a fan of Ommegang, and quite interested in what their collaboration with Chouffe will yield. I made short work of the previous 3 in the pack, but was careful to save one to review on a clean slate this warm summer evening.
Pours to a lovely first appearance: golden and opaque with a generously heady crown. After several minutes and sips, a solid layer of white remains. Not vigorously bubbly, but I did open this promptly after removing from the fridge so those bubbles might just be too cold to be excited at the moment. Impressively, this coating of head is retained right to the end.
Crisp citrus and surprisingly delicate yeast on the nose. I initially gave the smell a lower rating because I was expecting something more intense, but bumped it up a tad to show my appreciation for balance. But still, given the players involved I thought the yeast would be more upfront.
Yum. While first impressions were too subtle to fully appreciate, this blonde is winning me over. It's actually so lively that it would be an injustice to separate mouthfeel and taste in different paragraphs. Gnomegang coats my mouth with a full body of sweetness, which quickly and distinctly gives way to a gentle bitterness on the back and sides of my tongue. It finishes with a mild slight (and pleasant) metallic taste, that I attribute to the deceptively high abv (9.5).
Overall we have ourselves a winner. I am curious to see if the larger 750mL would have any effect on the bottle conditioning.

On tap at Hops and Pie. Golden yellow color, minimal head. Aroma of strong Belgian yeast, fruity, spicy. Flavor was yeasty, very fruity, very Belgian. Not quite my cup of tea but a well made Belgian strong golden for sure. Would I order this again? No but I'd buy abotyle for my girlfriend, she liked it a lot.
