In Greek mythology, Aphrodite rises from the foam of the waves of the sea, enchanting all who see her, and inciting thoughts of love and lust wherever she goes.

We could hardly say it more eloquently. Our Limited Edition Aphrodite Ale is ethereal, intriguing and mysterious – as the Goddess Aphrodite must have been. Aphrodite has champagne-like carbonation, much as the foam of the waves of the sea. Plus enchanting flavors with whispers of raspberry and pear, and hints of funk and tartness created by the Brett yeast. The refreshing dryness comes from the unusual combination of Ommegang and Brett yeasts, and incites feelings of love, though we don't know about lust. Grains of paradise are infused into the nectar, and when poured Aphrodite is crowned with a luxuriously shimmering rose-pink head.

Aphrodite pours an unusual reddish/pink color with a huge frothy, white head (2-3inches) that leaves some good lace. Raspberry notes intermingle with strong whiffs of Brettacomyces, all the while hints of citrus and grains of paradise linger in the back. Raspberry, citrus and pear fruit flavors are strong and tart out front, with some malty sweetness balanced in there. Lighter in body for the style, this crispy brew is also high in carbonation. Complex, tart and surprisingly refreshing, another GREAT brew from the folks at Brewery Ommegang, and an amazing finish to a great run! (584 characters)

On tap at the Blue Monk Tuesday night.Came to the table n a tulip glass a somewhat murky pink with a very thin light pink head that was gone in a flash.Sweet and tart raspberries really jump out ya to go along with a very slight sour/yeasty funk,a trace of iron as well.Flavors start out with ripe tart raspberries with a more noticable funky spicy element coming into play as you drink more,it can a little sweet after awhile as well.A well made beer, its not all fruit but has some complexity and kick to it. (509 characters)

Very pretty beer. Rose colored, pink head that was fairly sticky.

Very sweet, fruity aroma. Definitely raspberry.

Funky taste to begin, a little tart. Then the sweet raspberries and other fruit take over. Again, it is very sweet. Also, the alcohol is noticeable.

Sweet and sharp. I would be happier with less sweet and more tart.

Interesting beer. (351 characters)

Poured into a pint glass. Had at New World Tavern--Plymouth

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, high carbonation, reddish brown in color, clear

Smell: brett, yeast, and dark fruit--not the best of smells

Taste: very juicy, cherry, grape, and pear--especially at the start, hay in the middle, and slight hops at the end. It has some characteristics of a dry rose wine.

Mouthfeel: sweet and slightly funky, dry aftertaste, high carbonation, light bodied

Overall: Very different. Kinda like a cross between a rose wine and a saison..it also has elements of a less sweet Leinie's berry. I would say this is a great beer for wine drinkers, but I have had way better from Ommegang. Not a bad beer, but several of their latest releases have blown me away. This sadly is not one of them. (775 characters)

L: Pours ruby tinted brown with a thin tan film on top. S: Smells like cherries with a little funk to back them up.
T: Cherry, spice, dark moist cake, over ripe fruit funk, lemony tartness, bitter hop accent on the finish.
F: Medium body with above average carbonation. Faint warming.
O: A big beer with a complex mix of flavors. (332 characters)

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Light ruby and red with a quickly forming, persistent off-white, light pink head.

Fresh, authentic raspberry aroma and a mild, unappealing plastic smell.

Sweet, juicy, authentic raspberry flavor and little else--very nice.

Medium mouthfeel with high carbonation. Appropriate and a pleasure to drink.

A delicious raspberry ale that truly allows the authentic, fresh, and vibrant flavor of the fruit to shine through. Quite nice! (480 characters)

Pours a cloudy prune color with a huge bubbly thick pink head that dies down to light lacing.

The aroma escapes me for the most part. Peppercorn and a dried chili peppers of all things. There is an underlying fruit juice smell with some funk rearing it's head every once in a while. Noticeable raspberry smell.

Tastes very fruity and only lightly tart. Funky backend that doesn't show up all too often.

Mouthfeel is light woth lots of carbonation.

Overall is really good and pretty interesting. Well worth picking one of these up just to try something a little different (574 characters)

A: I popped the cork and the smoke pours out. The color is a surprising bright pinkish red hue with a foam head filled with whole lot of effervescent bubbles that cools down kind of quickly, but with some lacing. This beer has some real color and body to it.

S: This smells like beer, Belgian beer with a fruity sweet hints.

T: The taste is tangy and very tasty. It has a fruity flavor that is wine like and slight sourness. I have had some "Lambric" Belgian beers that really slam you with a hard tart fruit flavor that is overwhelming that almost seems like it should be mixed. This is gentle, smooth, tasty and palate cleansing. Real nice.

M: This is a smooth brew that is a nice drink. I normally prefer low carb, but this works as a high carbonation beverage. It's like sherbert and cleanses your palate. "Sure Herbert take a bite." Robert Creeley poet

O: Overall this is a really good beer.

This beer is meant to be drank with Latin Jazz. I recommend Chico O'Farrill or William Cepada!

Purchased at the source at Brewery Ommegang.

A-Pours a slighly veiled bright crimson with a thick and ample pink head. Unusual, and cool

S-Overwhelming pungent raspberry and pear. Mouthwatering.

T-Dry, slightly sour raspberry is at the fore, giving way to green pear and a building sensation of dry sourness. Brett is definately present. Impossible to believe this is almost 9% abv.

M-Medium astringent mouth with well balanced carbonation.

O-I am not a huge fruit beer fan, and I am not big on sours, but this is a nice little changeup brew that I enjoyed alot and would buy again. (588 characters)

On tap at Comet Coffee Shop. Pink bodied with a thin head. A slightly malty beginning followed by a raspberry tartness. Other fruit mellows the raspberry bite.Fruity aroma. Medium modied. Not that wild, refreshing with a decent bitterness.Appropriate carbonation.
Felt the same with the bottled version, except that I liked the more purple colour better. Funky musty aroma. (374 characters)

On-tap @ Blue Palms Brewhouse in Hollywood; served in a 10oz goblet.

Hazy ruby body glows like a lantern while supporting a thin layer of cherry-blossom-tinged suds. Average retention, feeble lacing.

Fresh fruit aromatics are a unique hard-to-identify blend, reminds me of a well crafted cocktail. Raspberry and pear are present in equal measure in the nose, and play off one another marvelously.

Raspberries are tart and bracing up-front. A touch of acohol arrives mid-palate and pears show up at the beginning of the finish. Tart yet well balanced. Any other ingredients are pure but restrained.

Medium-light bodied with sufficient carbonation and free of astringency.

Bright, fresh, clean, and expertly blended, while perhaps lacking in complexity, this is one of the most approachable sours I've had. (814 characters)

On tap at Wold of Beer at North Hills 2/16/12.

Pours a faint reddish pink with a thick mountain of soft, pink head that has decent retention. The nose is sweet and fruity. The taste is sweet and fruity, tart with a little bit of raspberry coming through. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and crisp.

This is a smooth beer. For the ABV you would have no idea. The flavor is a little one dimensional but it's still enjoyable and tasty. In my opinion it's worth checking out. (471 characters)

Pinkish amber body, finger of white head that recedes into surface memory.

Smell is serious funk. Serious. A trace of raspberry.

Taste is much mellower and subdued. Tart raspberry swings in on the finish, sweetness and Brett dominate the main body. Tastes better than it smells.

Smooth, textured body. Nice.

Raspberry Brett stuff is so hit-or-miss. This is a hit. (367 characters)

Bottle bought back in Feb '12, drank in Aug '12.

A: Pours ruby red with minimal red and no retention; like carbonated cranberry juice. Slight haze.

S: I can't help but think V8 Splash. Extremely sweet berry. Really no hint of brett.

T: Bready malt supplemented with strong, sweet fruits - sweet raspberry/strawberry. Slight tartness, unsure whether it's fruit or brett. Slight bitterness, finishes dry.

M: light body, dry finish, good carbonation

I'm not sure whether I dislike this style of beer (whatever you would call this), but I feel like the juices are overdone. More emphasis on the brett/yeast with the raspberry/pear juice as a supplement may have worked better. I seriously feel like I'm drinking a V8 Splash, not a beer. (737 characters)
