This beer was poured out of a 12 ounce bottle into a Sam's glass served cool

Thick off Whitehead and the hazy topaz colored body

Smells like cloves and sweet grain

Has a nice front of marmalade with the strong thick middle of Belgian yeast which is slightly Tannic

Will carbonated with a very dry finish

This is an okay beer but very very yeasty the yeast seems to overpower the grain profile but it seems like the Brewers were trying to achieve

A: The beer is relatively clear yellowish amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a two finger high off white head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a finger high frothy layer of bubbles covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are light aromas of Belgian yeast, grainy malts and spices in the nose.
T: The overall taste is quite malty and also has some hints of yeast and spicy rye in the finish along with a very slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and relatively dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an enjoyable beer if you like something malty with Belgian yeast and some spicy rye. It’s not that difficult to drink and packs in a lot of flavors.

Best by 8/2014.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy orange-white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy patches of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, and some earthy, grassy, and herbal aromas. Taste is much the same with a slight herbal bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Cool new lables and cool new brews from Ommegang.Poured into my Ommegang chalice a brilliant a deep orange infused lighter amber with a spot on one finger white crown that left multiple chunks of lace behind as it settles into a soapy-like mass atop.Toasted grain notes in the nose along with light phenols and a hint of pepper,light aromas but decnet enough.The toasted grain comes out again on the palate with a little phenolic yeastiness and a faint shot of spice from the rye.I think this is a good alternative to the pumpkin and Oktoberfest fall beers out there,it's not in your face with big flavors but a smooth easy drinking table beer.I could drink alot of this.

This was a very pretty beer. In a pint glass it was a hazy amber color that was beautifully carbonated. There was a thick fluffy white head with a good deal of lace.

Kind of a fresh, outdoors aroma. Grainy and sweet.

The grainy aroma turned out to be rye and oatmeal. Spicy. A bit of grassy hops.

Very smooth and drinkable.

I hope this stays on tap for a while at Pigs Fly.

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy orange amber with a monstrous rocky white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is subdued - grainy malts and a little fruit with some floral perfumey hops.

The flavor is sweet grainy malts, a little fruit and a little rye with a medium bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, it's a decent amber but a bit uninteresting and pricey at $11 per 4 pack.

Growler filled at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY ($6.99 for a 32 ounce pour)

Pours lightly hazed, Starts with a large off white head, going to a thicker film and leaves better the ample high fine webs of lacing.

Sniff sniff sniff reveals just a whiff of mild sweet malts.

Flavorful and smooth amber, nice layers of malts. caramel, bread, slight rye presence. Easy drinking and enjoyable.

Fine beer to add to a marinade. Some went right into my jerk pork tenderloin bath.

Not the most sexy style of brew but this is a well crafted and quality new offering from Omme.

Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass

Appearance: two inch head, high carbonation, gold in color, clear

Smell: apricot, hay, and funk

Taste: big apricot, some tropical fruit, honey, and funkiness

Mouthfeel: moderate body, funky and slightly sweet, high carbonation

Overall: This to me tastes like an above average to average slightly sweet biere de garde. Not much stands out to me about this. Yes it is good and I would not turn it down, however I will not rush out to get another either.

On tap at the Common Table.

The beer pours a golden color with a white head. I get a lot of grain notes in the aroma, with a hint of yeast and some grass. The flavor is fairly dry with a lot of the husky grain notes. I also get some grass and earth from the hops as well as some spices and some yeast. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Tulip.

Appearance: Dense orange with huge, sticky off-white head.

Smell: Banana, sweet fruits, clove, some spice. Extremely Belgian.

Taste: Malt and yeast dominated, with banana, ripe dark fruits, caramel, and clove. There is some nice, light spice notes on the finish from the rye and the hops.

Feel: Seems full bodied yet light, creamy yet effervescent, sweet yet dry. This is the type of mouthfeel that only great Belgian beers can pull off.

Overall: This an exceptionally well crafted beer that is very suitable for the Fall season. I really should give this an even higher score, but it doesn't do enough to truly grab my attention.

Funk, spice and grain aromas greet the nose. The beer pours slightly hazy copper amber, producing a huge 3” rocky, very persistent off white foam cap. Very fine and soft carbonation in combination with the rye, oats and wheat produces very big, clingy, clumpy lace. Big grain flavors dominate the palate with biscuit supporting rye spice, some rye/wheat tang, slight funk and some faint banana. Earthy hops come in at the end to complete this light, well rounded and well composed beer. The grains in this medium body beer provide a rich rye, wheat and oat texture with a little oat slickness.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy copper golden orange with lots of bubbles. Huge six finger off white head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A fairly complex spicy and malty aroma. Spicy and funky yeast up front with some clove and pepper. Big hints of rye along with fruity esters including orange, lemon, and pear. Bready wheat grains and malts with hints of biscuit, caramel, and toffee. Also some hints of oats and banana. Some moderate earthy and grassy hops. A pretty funky and nice smell.

Taste: Like it smells, a nice and complex mix of malts and spices. Lots of yeast upfront with a funky Belgian like kick. Some white pepper and clove. Bready malts and wheat with notes of biscuit, caramel, toffee, and oat. Taste of fruits including orange, lemon, banana, and pear. Also a solid hop presence with some earthy hops and grass. A complex and well balanced taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Creamy and somewhat chewy. Very smooth.

Overall: A pretty interesting and solid tasting beer. A nice mix of malts, spices, and hops. Has some bite to it while still being very smooth.

A: Hazy amber brown with a huge white head and lots of lacing.

S: Malt, rye, spicy, dark fruit.

T: Good malty beer with a slightly spicy backbone from the rye, somewhat nutty.

M: Soft mouth, delicate.

O: A very enjoyable offering that screams fall, as was the point.

A- The clear deep orange body has a thick creamy light tan head and a relaxed microcarbonation to it.

S- The fresh malt has some lightly toasted oat notes and some earthy malt hints followed by some dubbel or dark sherry notes in the finish.

T- The earthy grain has some lightly toasted malt notes followed by the classic Ommegang yeast profile. There is a nice cola note in the finish with a herbal green dry hop finish. The dubble yeast flavor and dark candy notes come thru as the beer opens up.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a gentle carbonation and no alcohol heat noticed.

O- This beer has a nice toasted malt and earthy grain flavor with great “cellar” character. Making is a bit mysterious, yet complex and sessionable at the same time.

A bit of haze lingers in this gold-amber beer. The head, almost perfectly white, sits between one and two fingers tall and shows good form, retaining itself well. Lacing is left in patches and in good quality down the glass.
This beer's showing some depth and complexity in the nose, but it really comes out in the flavor. There's a very light spiciness, toasty grains, soft fruits flesh and just a touch of light earthiness.
The taste has a lot of complexity; with or without having had many of this style (some reviews I haven't gotten to, but I'd say about 10 at this point), there's a mastery evident here. I realize some people don't get or particularly like subtlety, but it's all over this brew. Layers open up beneath one another, then all come together. The yeast offers up light earthy notes as well as spiciness, a wheat element mingling with the bready and toasty malts base. Rye offers a peppery note and chooses to complement rather than overwhelm. Soft flavors of pear and ghostly hints of banana as well as tangy apple flesh almost complete it, a gentle honey-like sweetness holding it together as just enough of a floral hops presence balances it out.
Flaked oats account for this beer's smoothness, which plays with the natural crispness to make for a very nicely balanced feel. The crisp nip is gentle, and this beers flows very, very nicely as the smoothness never fades and the light-medium body never thins or loses depth.
Say what you will about this beer. I love Ommegang, but I wasn't gunning for this to be a superb beer before I tried it. What really sells me is the attention to detail, complexity, and ability to be simultaneously soft but remarkably flavorful and deep.

A: Pours a clear amber orange with a puffy 3 finger slightly yellowed head. Tons of visible carbonation visible in the body. Head doesnt want to fizzle away and leaves lacing all down the sides of the glass.

S: One of the most authentic belgian smelling ommegang beers I've had. A real nice yeasty aroma, backbone of spicy rye and a hint of hop. Almost a light fruit in there as well.

T: Can really tell they were working toward a balanced ale. Isn't overwhelming in any one category but holds it together nicely. Good spiciness from the rye and yeast. Does have a little hop kick at the end.

M: Light body with a lot of carbonation. Really fizzles in your mouth almost like a soda. Crisp finish

Overall not sure if I would consider this an American Amber, much to belgian to be in the same category as other reds. Very balanced and easy drinking, but not sure if I would seek this out.

12 ounce bottle, poured into a goblet.

Appearance: Pours a gorgeous orange/gold amber with two and a half fingers of an off-white head, that lasted forever. Held up to the light, there’s plenty of red, orange highlights sparkling throughout. Beautiful beer to look at.

Aroma: Floral, and spicy. Black pepper, citrus, saffron, and brown sugar. Freshly baked bread.

Taste: Sweet, yet nicely balanced by the spices. Good citrus notes, finished by nice bready notes from the rye, oat and wheat used to make the beer. Oatmeal with fresh fruit, in the best possible way!

Mouthfeel: Effervescent. There’s a lot of nice carbonation that cleanses the palate and makes you want to take another drink.

Overall: Even though I had this beer out of season, it is still an excellent beer. Can’t wait for autumn to come around again and have it in season. Another excellent offering from Ommegang!

Very attractive pour... Glowey deep orange color with a bountiful foamy head. Good retention + nice clumpy lace. Aroma is crisp malt and fruit. Apples, honey-like, fresh grains, and floral notes. Very pleasant sniffing. Flavors are good as well. Refreshing, fruity, lightly phenolic, and plenty of fresh toasty cracker malts. Body is a solid medium. Good carbonation prickle combined with a dry and ever-so-slightly gritty texture make for a delightful mouthfeel. I enjoy this.

Pleasant satisfying brew. A small retained head. Above average mouthfeel. Good drinkability, a meal in itself. Moderately yeasty. Very good for the style, reminds me of some Three Floyds creations. Satisfying. Slight edgy tartness. Suitably carbonated. Dry finish.

12oz bottle served in pint glass, (substantial) yeast reserved in the bottle. The beer is mostly clear and orange amber in color. Massive off-white head; huge spicy-floral yeast aroma.

Sipping through the foamy top I find aggressive carbonation and a delicious, grainy body. Oats must provide the smoothness on the palate while rye provides a grainy bite. Lots of flavor here, but not a lot of hop bitterness. Nor excessive sweetness. But the yeast has developed some really great flavors of honey and cloves here. Would drink again.

Poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a deep copper/amber color and is cloudy. Poured a thick 2 finger head that lingers for a time. Sticky lacing along the side of the glass as it goes down. Lots of bubbles visible as well. Looks really nice. (4.25)

S- Spicy rye and funky Belgian yeast. Very little hop presence, but it is there and it's herbal/earthy. The rye is the most prominent malt aroma in my opinion, but there I can tell that there is a sharp wheat character as well, along some type of candi sugar/syrup seems to be here as well. The yeast is certainly complex, but the dominant character that I get is a cherry quality. A lot going on for a beer under 6% ABV. (4)

T- That spicy rye character is even more evident here, and it is a really nice compliment to what the fruity yeast brings along. There is even a very small amount of alcohol warmth, which is surprising considering the ABV, however it is really nice here and compliments the boldness of the grain bill well. Just enough hop bitterness to keep it from becoming too sweet. (4)

M- Typically highly carbonated Belgian ale. Effervescent and finishes very dry, and is light-bodied. (4)

O- A great beer for the fall/winter. A very bold and characterful beer that would stand up very well to most any hearty winter meal, and has just a touch of alcohol warmth to bring it all together. Personally, Belgian beers are not my usual pick, but this is one that I would get again. (4.01)

Brewery Ommegang "Scythe & Sickle Harvest Ale"
12 oz. brown bottle, "PKG ON 07/17/13 BEST BY 07/2015" - a little over a year old at the time of tasting. I would imagine that time has allowed some of the malt sweetness to recede, some of the spice to soften, and whatever alcohol that might have been there to smooth. Sampled at 48˚F.

Beautiful packaging. Great name. The bottle opens with a crack and a hiss. The longstanding bottle delivered a crystal-clear dark amber body before the yeast was roused, giving it a bit of haze and a seemingly lighter color. Had I been more careful I could have maintained the clarity but I wanted some of the yeast flavor as well. The frothy yellowed off-white head holds remarkably well and leaves sheets of broken lace behind it.

I feel as if I can smell the rye in the nose, delivering a bit of spiciness atop a delicate sweetness of wheaty malt. Regardless, there's a bright spiciness that's at least partially due to the yeast as well, and I'm assuming added spices. It's bold, almost like a whiff of cinnamon powder.

The flavor is spicy as well, and again I can't tell how much of that's coming from the yeast, but it's clear that at least some of it is coming from the rye. It's refreshing to get the distinct flavor of the rye without it being hidden behind notes of darker malts or spicy hops! There's just enough sweet, golden and delicately caramelish malt to balance that; and some wheat character balances it out - it's richly malty without being overdone in body. Quite pleasant with some apple-like fruitiness mixed in. As might be expected, the bitterness is kept in check as the spiciness does quite a bit to dry it. It lingers on the palate well into, and even through, the finish... a bit of spice hangs on even at the last moment as I'm raising the glass to my lips for another sip.

In the mouth it's medium bodied, and it delicately bristles across the tongue.

Overall it's quite an impressive ale, delivering a brilliant combination of a Belgian-style ale with a maltier "harvest" ale, essentially creating a bit of a new style. But forget that, it's the richness of its character, and the balance that make it worth seeking out.

Scythe & Sickle is amber in color. It looks a tad hazy. There are a few loose yeast particles swimming about. Backlighting reveals some nice orange highlights and gives it more of a copper look. It’s topped with an enormous off-white head that easily stands over three fingers tall. It’s very slow to recede, leaving a very thick, stick web of lace trailing down the glass. Very impressive.

The nose is a little on the weak side, but is pretty good. It kicks off with a biscuity malt scent. Given that and the rye, it definitely has a strong “bread” vibe going for it. The rye also adds just a hint of a spicy note. Smells a bit toasty, grainy, and earthy. There are some additional spices that emerge late. Perhaps a bit of pepper and clove. Alcohol doesn’t seem to be much of a factor at all. Not much of a surprise given its modest abv. Not bad at all.

The flavor is just a notch better than the nose. It’s good stuff. It definitely has a strong biscuity, bread-like flavor that resonates throughout. Makes for a nice malt base. In addition to bolstering the biscuity, bready flavor, rye adds a spicy twist. Tastes good. Spicy notes of clove and pepper are also apparent. It is very earthy, grainy, and toasty throughout. The flavor is definitely reminiscent of a “harvest.” Alcohol is virtually buried. Finishes earthy, bready, and spicy. It might seem simple and straight forward, but it is tasty.

The body is on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation looks active, but the bubbles feel very light and soft. This stuff goes down nice and easy. I could handle another bottle or two.

Scythe & Sickle is a nice fall beer. I like it. Its strong earthy, grainy, and bread-like flavors combine to make a really nice flavor and are very reminiscent of the fall season. It’s good stuff. If it lacks anything, it’s flash. I happen to like that about it. Definitely worth grabbing if you see it.

Picked up a single from EuroMarket for about $3. It's poured orange-amber with little floaties and a long-lasting white head. The beer is surprisingly dry and bitter, but I guess that's appropriate. There's a big spicy, peppery finish with orange peel and light caramel up front. The aroma is fruitier with a little pear and apricot over doughy grain and toast. It is an earthy, herbal Belgian, and it really needs to warm to cellar temp for the edgier notes to balance out. It's certainly interesting, but I might not want to go through an entire 6-pack. Still, glad I tried it.

Pours two fingers of head on a cloudy straw colored body.
The aroma is honey, grain and spice. Pretty nice.
The taste has a complex and balanced profile. Moderate doses of grapefruit bitter and honey sweet.
The texture is crisp.
Enjoyable.
