Notes/Commercial Description:
Scythe & Sickle is an-amber ale brewed with a variety of malts, including pils, rye flakes and oat flakes, for incredible depth of flavor and a hint of natural sweetness. Scythe & Sickle brings a new life and flavor to autumn beer lists traditionally filled with Oktoberfests and pumpkin ales. The flavors of the hard work of summer and the celebration of autumn harvest are captured in Scythe & Sickle, creating a unique but traditional Ommegang farmhouse harvest ale.

“Scythe & Sickle is our foray into honoring the harvest season, taking the finest malts and blending them seamlessly into a rich amber ale,” says Brew Master Phil Leinhart. “Farming is about precision, timing and care, and this gently sweet ale is our testament to the craft and care of farming.”

Best by 8/2014.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy orange-white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy patches of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, and some earthy, grassy, and herbal aromas. Taste is much the same with a slight herbal bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

A: The beer is relatively clear yellowish amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a two finger high off white head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a finger high frothy layer of bubbles covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are light aromas of Belgian yeast, grainy malts and spices in the nose.
T: The overall taste is quite malty and also has some hints of yeast and spicy rye in the finish along with a very slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and relatively dry on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an enjoyable beer if you like something malty with Belgian yeast and some spicy rye. It’s not that difficult to drink and packs in a lot of flavors.

Pours a nice dark amber with a voluminous head that lasted the whole session.
Aromas of wheat, malt, grains and spices.
Taste followed the nose closely. The spices were more pronounced however.
Very crisp and bubbly mouth feel. It's obvious that this beer is highly carbonated. I felt this beer displayed more of the buttery characteristics of a lager as opposed to the clean taste of an ale. Refreshing and welcomed change from all the ho hum Oktoberfest beers saturating the market today, although this is not a Marzen bier. This will probably be my go to fall beer henceforth.

This brew pours an opaque copper color with a foamy white three finger head and heavy lacing. The head also leaves a nice collar.

The smell is mostly sweet malts, lemongrass and grain, musty and earthy.

The taste follows the nose with sweet and some roasted malts, gritty lemongrass taste combined with a musty earthy dank taste, some fruit, maybe pear and a little gritty. Sweet malts dominate. No real hop presence is detectable. Overall a very good malty beer.

12oz bottle, packaged on 07/11/14, best by 07/2016. Slow pour into a tulip glass and stopping right as the sediment tried to come out.

Appearance: Hazy golden to coppery amber with a dense rocky light tan head. Lots of thick strands of lacing all over the glass.

Smell: Leafy, lightly herbal and floral. A hint of yeast.

Taste: Clean and crisp up front, lightly toasted malt in the middle, and then a mild noble hop finish. I'm not detecting any Belgian-like fruity esters, but I do get some toffee-like buttery flavors from time to time. Rather mild in flavor for a beer of this style. More flavorful as the beer warms up to room temperature, but still not as flavorful as I thought it would be.

Mouthfeel: Lively carbonation, a bit thicker than water underneath. Cleans the palate with each sip.

Overall / Drinkability: I wonder if this beer would get better if it sat a bit longer. A great looking beer, but not as flavorful as I had hoped. It does make me think of a beer good to have after working in autumn out in the fields, but not something particularly flavorful as advertised on the bottle. One is enough and I don't feel a need for another.

Light cloudy copper. The nose is yeasty. Light bodied with a classic funky flavor.
