Scythe & Sickle is an-amber ale brewed with a variety of malts, including pils, rye flakes and oat flakes, for incredible depth of flavor and a hint of natural sweetness. Scythe & Sickle brings a new life and flavor to autumn beer lists traditionally filled with Oktoberfests and pumpkin ales. The flavors of the hard work of summer and the celebration of autumn harvest are captured in Scythe & Sickle, creating a unique but traditional Ommegang farmhouse harvest ale.

“Scythe & Sickle is our foray into honoring the harvest season, taking the finest malts and blending them seamlessly into a rich amber ale,” says Brew Master Phil Leinhart. “Farming is about precision, timing and care, and this gently sweet ale is our testament to the craft and care of farming.”

Poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a deep copper/amber color and is cloudy. Poured a thick 2 finger head that lingers for a time. Sticky lacing along the side of the glass as it goes down. Lots of bubbles visible as well. Looks really nice. (4.25)

S- Spicy rye and funky Belgian yeast. Very little hop presence, but it is there and it's herbal/earthy. The rye is the most prominent malt aroma in my opinion, but there I can tell that there is a sharp wheat character as well, along some type of candi sugar/syrup seems to be here as well. The yeast is certainly complex, but the dominant character that I get is a cherry quality. A lot going on for a beer under 6% ABV. (4)

T- That spicy rye character is even more evident here, and it is a really nice compliment to what the fruity yeast brings along. There is even a very small amount of alcohol warmth, which is surprising considering the ABV, however it is really nice here and compliments the boldness of the grain bill well. Just enough hop bitterness to keep it from becoming too sweet. (4)

M- Typically highly carbonated Belgian ale. Effervescent and finishes very dry, and is light-bodied. (4)

O- A great beer for the fall/winter. A very bold and characterful beer that would stand up very well to most any hearty winter meal, and has just a touch of alcohol warmth to bring it all together. Personally, Belgian beers are not my usual pick, but this is one that I would get again. (4.01)

Malty aroma is not strong, has an earthy undertone. Pours a nice bubbly orange-amber with a thick and rather persistent cream head. Flavor has malt, wheat and rye components with an earthy undertone and just a whisper of hoppy bitterness. Texture has about average body and a decent amount of tingle. Finish is earthy with hints of rye and wheat. Overall, not great, but interesting!

12 oz bottle, nonic pint

A – Dark gold to orange and then moderately-deep amber. A couple inches of foamy, craggy, thick head, with very long retention. Beer is hazy. The colors are brilliant, beautiful to look at.

S – Deep aroma of caramel, baked brown bread, and Maillard sweetness. A slight impression of breakfast syrup. Hop aroma is floral, fairly bitter. Also getting some mild vanilla and lemon.

T – Caramel malts and browned biscuits, with an even mix of floral hop flavor and bitterness. A touch of lemon here as well. Malty sweet, but carbonation and bitterness balance it out well.

M – Again, sweet from the malt, with off-setting bitterness lasting through the finish. Moderately high carbonation, very sudsy. Somewhat heavy body, with only a touch of dryness on the swallow.

O – With the high levels of maltiness and carbonation and the heavy body, this is nearing liquid bread. Love the balance of all of that with light but flavorful hops and perfect level of bitterness. A fantastic brew.

I need to try this again. I think the bottle was a bit older than it should be. Overall, a decent beer with some nice Belgian characteristics.
