Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Ommegang XV pays homage to the great Trappist ales brewed by monks in the Trappist monasteries of Belgium. Created with deep devotion to the brewing art, using the finest ingredients and made with infinite care, XV is unlike any ale we've ever brewed. Even by our exacting standards Ommegang XV stand alone.

Ommegang XV pours a deep walnut hue, with a ruby highlight, full head, and lively carbonation. The nose is malty and complex. Flavors of toffee and chocolate arise, mingling with molasses and caramel as the ale warms. Fruity esters and hints of raisin follow. The body is full and finishes with creamy smoothness.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color with plum hues and a one finger beige head that has great retention, only slowly settling into a lasting cap/ring.  Splotchy lacing left behind.

Slightly smokey, chalky aroma with dark malt sweetness and estery Belgian yeast notes.  Hints of plum, raisin and fig along with subtle oak, caramel and roasted chooclate malt.

Medium bodied with a dry, slightly chalky texture and a nice balance of peppery spice, sweet and roasted malt and estery dark fruit notes.  Subtle roast with chocolate, caramel and toffee flavor along with faint peppery spice. Lots of dark fruit sweetness on the back end with vinous grape, cherry, currant raisin and plum.  Nicely balanced with a slightly dry finish.  Complex and flavorful with a well masked ABV making it very easy to drink.  Another nice beer from Ommegang.

Pours into my Ommegang chalice a deep walnut brown with ruby hue(like the label says)an almost creamy-like beige head atop that leaves one broken ring of lace as it settles slowly.Dark fruit dominates the nose along sweet alcohol.Flavors of dark fruit and candied sugar dominate, some toffee notes and light chocolate in the finish, some alcohol heat becomes more prevalent as it warms more.A nice smooth creamy feel makes it even more decadent.A big sipper on the sweeter side but it's very lush and warming.

A - pours a deep dark nearly opaque brown with lovely ruby red highlights. Over three fingers worth of frothy light tan foam. Decent retention but does quickly recedes. Leaves a bit of lacing.

S - classic quad/bsda aroma. Intense but balanced notes of fruit and spice. At first notes of juicy plums, raisins, blackberries and even some vinous notes of strawberries and raspberries. As the beer warms the spice notes come through clear. Dusty cinnamon, black pepper, and mocha and fresh baked dark bread round out the nose.

T - flavors of doughy brown bread up front. sweet fruit flavors follow quickly. Very vinous-like notes of figs, raisins, and blackberries. The flavors of fruit skins create the idea of tannin. The center is juicy with even more fruit flavors. the backend is festively spicy with notes of cinnamon, allspice and pepper. finish is slightly sweet and fruity with a hint of spice.

M - full bodied. hovering between slick and creamy texture. High carbonation with full round bubbles.

O - great beer. Smooth, flavorful and balanced. I am really looking forward to seeing this beer change over time.

A one-inch, rocky, chestnut head turns creamy as it settles and lingers at a quarter inch. Patchy lace clings above a clear, dark brown to dark copper (SRM 23-25) beer.

Candy sugar immediately jumps off with dark fruits following. The entire pantry of dates, plums, figs, etc. forms a cacophony of malt. Warmth settles this down, presenting cantaloupe and allowing molasses to be discerned.

The flavor is very sweet with cherries up front followed by pomegranate bitterness. Spicy phenols are fruity while the finish is mild and lingering.
The palate is as expected with abundant carbonation and alcohol, while residual sugars lead to a fuller than typical body.

This is a nice sipping beer that can be enjoyed on a cool, shady, Spring day while waiting for guests to arrive.

Ommegang has made yet another fantastic beer. I bought this for myself for Christmas last year and just opened it tonight...September 20th.

Looks amazing in the glass with nice lacing. Smells and tastes of dried fruits. Nice alcohol warming and the mouth feel is perfect.

Overall a beer well worth trying. If you can find it, buy it.

750 ml caged and corked bottle from the collectors' tin, poured into a Chimay goblet.

A- 1-finger, dense brown head. Very dark brown body that is just short of black. Held to the light, it exhibits reddish hues. Killer retention at a thick film and great stick.

S- Lots of raisin at first. Some chocolate. Fortified or mulled wine? Other stewed, stone fruits and berries. Just hints of the higher ABV with warmth.

T- Much as aroma suggests. Raisin, tart cherries and dark chocolate. Complex. Sweetness is kept in check by tart qualities. Slightest alcohol in finish when it comes to room temperatures. A tiny bit of ash at warmer temps.

M- Rich, full-bodied. Viscosity tamps down the carbonation. Absolutely no alcohol burn, maybe some warmth very late.

O- Quite the treat. This bottle had a few months on it. Richness lends itself to a dessert or nightcap. Would definitely pick up for a special occasion to share amongst friends.
