A beautifully complex brew. Summer Ales are ostensibly 'simple' and 'light'. But this one is sublimely bitter with an enduring aftertaste without being heavy. Boasts a 6.8 ABV but still feels summery. Has that distinctive Ommegang tingly mouth-feel.

On tap at the Union Beer House in Lebanon, PA

Poured into a nice medium size goblet, faintly hazy, with bright white head. only moderate carbonation.

Getting the yeast and banana on the nose, however faintly.

No big flavor punch at all. But you know what, it's GOOD. Very mild and subtle flavors swirling around in the mouth, but somehow the flavors come through as full . Banana, yeast, light spice, even makes you think of summer. Extremely refreshing, but satisfying as a beer, not just as a quench thirster. I freely admit that belgians mostly leave me cold. Maybe this hit me on the right day, in the right mood, and the right level of tiredness, but I can see happily putting away a six pack on a warm summers day.

Sorry, got a bit offtrack there. Mouth is medium and satisfying

Overall, well, see above. I am usually excited about beers that smack you in the mouth one way or another, and, again, belgians of any style are not really my cup of tea. This was extremely enjoyable, and I'll seek it out for the rest of the summer.

Cheers.

The color is a bit cloudy, bronze with a nice iridescent brightness. The head is foam and sticky and adhered well to the glass.

The nose is quite complex, very nice but gets drowned in the finish with a phenolic tone. Wheat grain is evident at first with a yeast, bubblegum, pepper and clove. The phenomenon then hit strongly and diminish a great aroma.

The flavor is a tinge sweet with banana and bubblegum then a bit bitter with hops and pine. The finish is a bit spicy with cloves and it finishes with a tonic water taste.

The feel bubbling, effervescent, dry and watery, much like tonic water.

This seemed to be a very good example of the style but it was ruined at every turn by one deterring detail.

A: Pours a very lightly hazy golden straw yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and a light amount of pale yellow highlights. The beer has a four finger tall dense foamy light beige head that very slowly reduces to a medium sized finger tall dense cap towards the center of the glass surrounded by a thick film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of grainy and pale malts with a slightly stronger aroma of lemon citrus and a moderate amount of Belgian yeast with a hint of spiciness.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of pale and grainy malts with a slightly stronger than moderate amount of lemon citrus. There is a light amount of Belgian yeast with a touch of spiciness and light to moderate flavors of floral hops which impart a light amount of lingering bitterness in the finish.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with slightly less than moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly crisp with a touch of dryness in the finish.

O: I found this beer to be a really nicely constructed summer brew - a nice combination of a traditional Belgian Pale Ale with some heavier flavors of citrus and a touch more hops than usual. Easy to drink and refreshing with well hidden alcohol.
