Smooth pour produces a rather impressive 2-finger head that has solid retention. Impressively dark with a sexy, brow head, this beer has a decent overall look. It leaves a small amount of lacing on the glass which is pretty impressive all things considered.
Dark-malt bomb when you get up close to it, this is one of those beers that you have to re-visit every once in a while to make sure you catch everything. Hints of chocolate and roasted malts dominate the front. A small trace of Belgian yeast can be found if one gets adventurous enough (performing the “Belgian dip” if you will). There’s also a thin trail of dark fruits to be found, but it’s so faint that I would hardly even call it there. Not that incredible, to be honest.
Velvety body with very mellow carbonation carries a bittersweet flavor straight to the tongue. Hints of chocolate with a coffee-like undertone hit initially but then things start to change. It really morphs into a very heavy smokiness, probably the result of the roasting process. It also has a bit of a wooden character which is something different. I don’t know if it’s necessarily good, but I like the variety. This is multi-faceted and interesting overall, but the combination of flavors isn’t the greatest I’ve ever had. One word to describe it would be robust. The picture of the heart tree on the label is incredibly appropriate what with the woody undertones and the fact that this would make a great winter brew.
I enjoyed this beer for the most part. While the flavors weren’t all there for me, it kept me interested. It’s one of those types of brews that grows on you as you go on. Hey, it’s perfect for the ‘theme’ of the project. A stranger becoming a friend. Recommended to all but the most up-tight of Northern bastards.
And now my drink has ended.

Pours black as a White Walkers soul with a very huge head...I had to slow down my pour to make sure i didnt over do it.Slight lacing and retention...so far so good.Smell is licorice and malt.First taste is not what I was expecting but maybe because of the Ommegang style I expected the siginiture taste of the Belgian style. This is NOT a chocolate bomb stout for sure.It does seem to melt in the mouth a bit but not a thick aftertaste.Do not let the name fool you. This is not a Russian Imperial Stout. This is much lighter and at first I was let down but after my first glass I get what they were trying to pull off here. Not bad at all. 3.5 out of 5 stars.
