DATE TASTED: November 29, 2013... GLASSWARE: Duvel snifter...OCCASION: Game of Thrones book one finished--a beer hopefully worthy of its namesake... APPEARANCE: absolutely louse-like three-finger head; chunky and creamy, gray/brown; jet black (could it be any other?) body--ultimately intimidating... AROMA: caramel and wintry fair (nutmeg? cinnamon? allspice?) stir up hauntingly chocolaty flavors--alluring... PALATE: whoa--full-bodied and arresting at the throat--like a corpsed Othar--with effervescence at the teeth--a complete, Wall-worthy presence that sits long after the sip is taken; each breath releases an alcoholic sigh...TASTE: a wooded funk, not quite plasticine--but a somewhat appropriate description--as well as bold, complex spices--BIG, NASTY...OVERALL: a beer to occupy a night, jarring and aggressive with more than adequate complexity to demand a drinker's attention--like the land north of the Wall...at $10.99, just about priced correctly...

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, char, and slight anise aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, char, and earth flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a higher level of carbonation with a crisp and prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid earth and char qualities, but the mouthfeel on this one is a bit too carbonated for the style in my opinion.
