Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, char, and slight anise aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, char, and earth flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a higher level of carbonation with a crisp and prickly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with solid earth and char qualities, but the mouthfeel on this one is a bit too carbonated for the style in my opinion.

Yeah yeah yeah...I know, another tool drinking this beer with the season premiere (a touch late to the party, but still...). None-the-less, a big fan of both brewery and show so I went for another one of these and saved it for the show. Enjoyed from the branded snifter.

a - brew opens with ferocity and pours a watery black with a generous Belgiany frothy foamy off tan head. Really foamy and milk shake like. Hangs out forever. Some visible carbonation can be seen in the glass but that's all as this is black as black gets.

s - nose is an unexpected burst of dark fruit flavor. BSDA anyone? Smells like other spiced up BSDAs from ommegang (think adoration but less zingy and more fruity). There is also some sweet roast and milk stout characteristics. Has that ommegang thang to it.

t/m/o - way more spiced than the nose advertised. White pepper, all spice, very ommegang...but also a bit over spiced. Really reminds me of comparing the trader joe anniversary to a standard Unibroue offering. You want it to be a bit more focused and crafted, but if it was, it would be one of the regular lineup. So it tastes like a one off should taste. Meh. The dark fruit is there and comes out more as my palate adjusted to the spiciness. At the end of the day not my cup of tea...or beer as the case may be. Nice feel if not a bit too zingy.
