This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Our first new year-round beer since 1996, Lunar Ale is in a category all its own. Brewed using a unique aromatic yeast, this refreshing variety is best described as a cloudy brown ale with a complex, malty aroma and flavor, and a crisp, dry finish.

Amber with a hazy Orange hue. Active, three-finger head that is light khaki in color. Kind of a muddy, dirty look to it.

Distinct scent is dominated by cloves and spices.

Tastes pretty much like it smells, which is not good. Cloves dominate. Get some malt in there, but no hops or spices to speak of.

I wouldn't recommend this one.

look: 3.25 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.25

Appearance: Deep mahogany, before a strong light, there are ruby highlights and crystal clarity. The head is small, off-white and retains moderately well. Thin, glass-coating lace adorns the glass walls.

Aroma: Strong, fresh baked bread aroma dominates the aroma. Dark caramel notes are also present., as well as a subtle cocoa note.

Taste: Wheat malt is fairly strong at the open, I was hopeful of finding fruity esters, particularly banana, but these seem to be absent. Pleasant dark bread notes carry the taste from start to finish, although there is little else. There is a faint blush of herbal hops at the close.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft, rather pleasant.

Drinkability/notes: Pleasant and drinkable, not outstanding, but not bad, either.

Presentation: Packaged in a short twelve ounce brown glass bottle with a twist-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.
