12oz bottle into an Andechs weizen glass.

Lunar pours with a murky, iced-tea color that brightens to a hazed blood orange hue when held to the light. A few ample trails of carbonation supply a bubbling sandstone head, but the foam doesn't last too long. Pleasant, mild aroma of toasted grains and rye bread with a little sweetness from caramel malts. The hops smell light and floral with traces lavender, while the yeast adds a soft fruitiness of apple flesh and mango.

Lunar tries its best to mimic the taste of German dunkelweizen, but falls a bit short. Toasted malts and bread crust are the dominant players, here--everything else is a bit too bland for my liking. Some toffee and caramel malts balance with a sharp twang from citric hops and a prickly carbonation level, but the finish is fairly lifeless. One of Boulevard's rare misses; I'm glad I only bought a single bottle, as I probably won't be trying this again.

A light brown color, maybe more of a dark amber color is shown in the glass. A quarter inch high head forms on top, light beige in color, then dissolving away quickly. The sweet spicy fragrances of coriander, nutmeg, and cinnamon are the most noticed.
That is followed by a dark bread scent, with the addition of a yeasty twang at the end. The malt comes to the front of each taste, with the strong and hearty bread flavors, that blends to a spicy yeast flavor. It finishes with a mild earthy bitterness. The feel goes from light to a medium texture, a little watery at the front, then blending to a light creamy texture, with a touch of carbonation at the end. A fairly drinkable beer, with a dark solid look, a spicy and hearty aroma, along with malty and bread flavors, with a good texture, make this a solid beer.

Pours a translucent blacken color with a thin ring of off-beige head.
Smell is deep with apricot and other dark fruit pits-also some wheat.
Taste hits first with the wheat/grain flavor then goes to a quick dark fruit taste-ending with a light sweet.
Finish is dry-slight wheaty after-taste here.
Drinks well-the dark wheats are very refreshing-fruit smooths through this beer.

12oz. bottle received in a recent trade with thehand. Thanks again man!

Pours a dark, cloudy coppery orange/light brown color that is pretty much completely opaque with a one finger frothy off white head that slowly fades into a thin lasting ring. Not much in the way of lacing.

Slightly tart, spicy aroma with some peppery zest and clove. There's also a decent amount of caramel and chocolate malt in the nose as well as some subtle citrus and banana fruit character.

Lots of light carbonation up front followed by a very spicy medium body that lingers into a long dry finish. This beer is almost all clove and and hops and to it's demise is completely dominated by these flavor. There's also some peppery notes along with some caramel/chocolate malt and light fruit buried underneath. It's very dry and almost offensively one dimensional. I really love Boulevard but this beer is a mess.

Lunar Ale is a hazy dark copper, red when held in the light. a bubbly thin head disappears after a few seconds.

smells sweet, like wheat and fruity esters. cloves and spice become more apparent with warming.

tastes fruity most of all. light on the wheat, with a hint of caramel and dough. cloves, bananas, and indistinguishable fruit somewhere near the middle. the hops are slightly spicy. a little weak/watery overall.

mouthfeel light, heavily carbonated, taste is gone immediately.

= besides its faults, it's not such a horrible beer. good to slip into a session, but not really tasty enough to have more than one.

A - Deep brown color. Average off-white head with good retention.

S - Really bready, wheat smell. Some banana and clove also, not unlike a Hefe, but definitely not just like one either.

T - Follows the smell, with lots of grainy/wheat and bready flavors. Banana is also in the forefront. Some darker caramel flavors too. Kind of like a darker Hefe. Unfortunately the flavors are a little watered down. I didn't necessarily think that the flavors would remain for long but they disappear really fast.

M - Medium to light bodied and average carbonation. Some creaminess but fairly watery.

D - Quite drinkable, part of that may be from how watery this is, drinkability is pretty good.

Notes: This wasn't a bad beer and I liked the flavors but it was too watery for me to really enjoy. Seems to be like a lot of Boulevards regular series in that it does most things pretty well but misses in one or two areas.

Taken from notes on a previous trip. Poured from a bottle into a cheap hotel glass. It pours a lightly hazy amber/brown color. A 1/4 inch off-white head froms. No sediment and minimal visible carbonation.

The aroma is primarily that of a strong earthy/mossy component from hops and a mild caramel sweetness, with a herby/floral note as well.

The taste is similar with a hoppy/earthy notes, reasonable caramel sweetness and and early ester-ish component.

This is light/medium bodied with a refreshing carbonation. It is clean and crisp have a mildly dry finish.

Overall, this is easy to drink but could've put forward more intensity on all fronts.

Cloudy copper-brown with a light tan head that fades quickly

Light fruitiness on the nose follows through into the taste with notes of plum, bubblegum, and clove. Crackery wheat and a drying nutty quality sum up the malt. Hops give low bitterness and light spiciness. Light bodied turning to watery at the end.

Nothing too impressive here. It doesn't have any major flaws and I wouldn't turn one down, but I won't drink Lunar very often.

Bottle via trade thanks to stephens101 on BA.

Pours cloudy mud brown with a one-finger off-white head.

Aroma is pretty nice and typical with banana, clove, and malty sweetness.

Flavor starts off decent, with caramel malt, banana, and clove. Nothing special, but all right. Then a weird off-flavor hits on the finish: something fairly acrid and mildly vegetal, possibly DMS. This lingers on the aftertaste.

Palate is somewhat thin and watery for the style.

Overall, a somewhat boring and slightly flawed example of the style. Would be good for someone like Indian Wells, but is a disappointment coming from Boulevard. Drinkability is not bad though despite this.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Cloudy amber with a fluffy, off-white head which dissipated and left not much lacing.

S: Rich banana and some clove with a little pepper and some alcohol.

T: A lot like the smell put onto a soft malt backbone.

M: Fizzy and a little thin.

D: It's pretty sweet so I don't know that I'd want to put back a bunch of these, but it'd be nice to have around for a change of pace during a session.

A: Light brown/dark amber hue with a fast forming, bubbly head wtih just a bit of lacing

S: Subtle sweet malt presence; fair amount of yeastiness present in the aroma; banana and cloves are obvious as is a touch of caramel

T: A nice sweet yeasty quality; banana and cloves are pleasant as well; a bit watery but a subtle sweet maltiness helps

F: Too thin with not enough carbonation

D: Quite drinkable--though the watery quality diminishes it a bit

Pleasant aroma of banana bread and cloves with another spice; nutmeg, maybe. Citrus and grassy hop notes are present in the nose, as well. Pours a clear amber with a thin head but somehow manages to appear muddy. Taste is sweet and complex, but not in a good way. Theres a lot, too much, going on in this beer. The end result is garbled. Medium bodied with an oily texture and rather flat carbonation. LIngering sweet finish, not crisp and dry as advertised. I like where Boulevard was attempting to go with this but it feels as though they overreached. Worth trying once.

12oz stubby. Consumed 01/02/09. I received this from a buddy who took a trip to Nebraska.

A) Pours with a thin head then settles quickly to very little lacing at the edge of the glass. Slightly hazy body. Cedar in color.
S) Sour apple. Light banana. Wheaty. Sweet notes of malt.
T) Apple. Caramel. Nutty. Banana. Sweet up front then mellows in the middle to fruity notes. Finishes with a nutty sweetness.
M) Crisp and fizzy up front. Smooths out by the finish. Light to medium body.
D) A decent brew. Not a standout.

Big Thanks to Blue Okie for sending this one my way. Style 102 of 103 marked off the list.

A: Pours a nice copper hue with a nice tall white head with tinges of tan. Okay retention but no lace noted.

S: Banana and clove dominate.

T: Banana with notes of lemon zest. Nice blast of clove.

M: Fairly thin, and not very carbonated for the style.

D: Okay. Just an okay beer, but it was one that I was really after.

Thanks Scot.

Poured into a standard pint glass.

A: A cloudy "pale ale" color or kind of a light brown. Hit the glass with a 1 1/2 finger off white or eggshell head that dissipated in about a minute leaving a ring of foam on the edge of the glass.

S: Spicy and tart. I can't name the spice, maybe clove? No noticeable hop aroma.

T: Wheaty with a hint of roasted or smokey malt. Very sharp and dry finish.

M: A little hard to describe, some creaminess from the carbonation and typical "wheat beer" feel. I don't know what to call that but you wheat beer drinkers know what I mean.

D: Generally, Wheat beers are not my forte but I really like this one. I may just have 3 or 4 after dinner tonight.

Served in a pint glass.

A: A very nice murky amber color with a strong amount of head that dissapates at a pretty quick pace. There's a little carbonation but very little laceing.

S: Very faint but very good and very fruity: I smell hops, banana, apple, caramel and a faint hint of spice.

T: Very odd and uneven taste. At times it leaves me flat, and other times I get these intense spikes of flavor in my mouth. Very fruity again with apple really dominating. It's sweet (caramel) but also with a hoppy bitterness. I actually think it's a very interesting taste, but it seems unbalanced and the ingredients aren't really integrated together.

M: Good but nothing special. Smooth but it makes a strong presence.

D: I have trouble with the drink, because while I do enjoy it a great deal, it's very uneven and unbalanced. So I'm left feeling a little perplexed and anxious of what the next drink will taste like instead of being satisfied. But an interesting beer nonetheless.

Quick review:

Medium brown with thin khaki head. Nose has aromas of nutmeg, banana and brown sugar. Palate is medium bodied and a little thin. Flavors of medium-dark wheat beers, chocolate and spices. Finish is a little flat and thin, dropping off on an odd note.

Not a great dark wheat. More like an "amber wheat."

12oz. bottle: This one pours a slightly hazy brownish amber color. There was a bit of a tan head on it that drops away rather quickly. Milder aroma. Some banana and clove to the nose, as well as some chocolate. The taste is good. Wheat, a hint of the chocolate, a bit of the clove. Nice balance of hops and sweetness. Poured a decent head which faded quicker than Vanilla Ice. Mostly a cloudy light brown, orange to the light and around the edges of my nonic.

Nose was relatively weak. Notes of banana, chocolate, a bit of yeast and coriander pretty much rounded it out.

Flavor was good, yet still none too potent. Bright and a bit sour at the beginning with coriander, banana, and a bit of citrus. The finish was more roasted than the initial impact. Ending notes were husky, a bit of bitter chocolate and coffee.

Carbonation was sharp, and the beer made no real impression on my mouth. The body was quite light, not exactly sure what style boulevard wishes to pinpoint this at, if any. Definitely not Boulevard's best, but not bad.

I'm not sure to what I should compare this brew. I think the other lower ratings come from comparing this to others of the style, but if you look at this ale by itself, it stacks up well. What it has over others is drinkability. Like other Boulevards this is a brew that does not offend. It is civilized and well made.

It has enough character that you could not say that it was too bland for the style. They just didn't leave anything crude in there like some do.

It's yet another Boulevard that get approval from me.
