Bottle 02088 of 13400
Poured medium orange/light tan, medium hazy, with a large head that subsided fairly slowly.
Definitely a funky, grassy smell, with spicy notes and clear hops. A touch of fruity aroma as well. You can smell the alcohol in the brew.
Taste is medium bitter with definite hops and yeast. Spices and fruit linger in a long aftertaste that ends in sweetness on the tip of your tongue. The complexity of the flavors is certainly tantalizing. Taste is this beer's strong point.
Mouthfeel is medium carbonation with a bit of a foamy feeling. The high alcohol is somewhat noticeable, but not too overpowering.
Drinkability was good but with a caveat: I certainly couldn't drink more than one of these, and would prefer to split the bottle with someone else rather than finish the whole thing.
This beer has grown on me over time, and I thus raised my rating of it just a touch in the drink and mouthfeel categories.
Re-reviewed on 13may2010, 2009 batch, bottle 1997. This beer has grown on me since I've decided that I like funky beers, wild ales, and beer brewed with brett. This batch is still quite tasty, nicely funky, and downright delicious. Ratings adjusted slightly higher.
