Saison / Farmhouse Ale |  8.50% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
Saison-Brett, based on our very popular Tank 7, is assertively dry hopped, then bottle conditioned with various yeasts, including Brettanomyces, a wild strain that imparts a distinctive earthy quality. Though this farmhouse ale was given three months of bottle age prior to release, further cellaring will continue to enhance the “Brett” character, if that's what you're after.

Poured from a 750 ml corked bottle into a Duvel tulip glass. 2014 vintage bottle.

Appearance: Big pop from the cork. Pours a bright and fairly hazy golden orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Huge gushing white head that takes up most of the glass and slowly settles into a smaller foamy layer. Leaves a lot of clingy lacing.

Smell: A very funky, yeasty, spicy, and fruity Belgian style aroma with hints of Brett, pepper spices, and fruit esters. Belgian yeast with clove, peppers, and funky Brett yeast giving some sour cherry hints. Big mix of fruit esters with hints of lemon, orange, green apples, banana, white grapes, pear, grapefruit, mango, tangerine, and peach. Earthy and floral hop scent with hints of grass. Sweet hints of candied sugar and honey. Pale malt with hints of wheat, straw, grains, and cracker. A very complex and good aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma previews, a nicely funky, yeasty, spicy, and fruity Belgian farmhouse style taste with big notes of Brett, spice, and zesty fruit. Belgian yeast with hints of farmhouse funk, clove, peppers, and Brett yeast giving some sour notes. Big taste of fruit esters with notes of lemon zest, green apples, orange, banana, pear, white grape, grapefruit, mango, peach, and tangerine. Earthy and herbal hop scent with some subtle notes of grass. Some candied sugar notes as well. Pale malt background with some notes of wheat, straw, grains, and cracker. A really good taste.

Mouthfeel: Body is on the heavier side of medium. Lots of prickly carbonation. Fairly tart and spicy with a drying finish. Alcohol presence is mild.

Overall: A very good twist on a Belgian style Saison. Good mix of fruit esters and spices with a nice kick of Brett funk.

I left a 2012 a couple of years ago with my father, who returned it to me today. I had forgotten buying it, and it was such a treat to have a well-aged Saison Brett unexpectedly show up at my doorstep.

As others have commented, the head is huge. It takes patience to let it settle enough to indulge without getting a foam mustache. But that gives you time to take in the floral scent of this brew, which is surprisingly delicate.

Saison-Brett is a yeast-worshiping beer, to the extent that it reminded me of a hefeweissbier. But the alcohol comes through to sharpen its edges, and there's none of the unpleasant belch-provoking fizz of that German hangover remedy.

Though the flavor profile is different, what stands out is the artisanal quality of this brew, worthy of the greatest Belgian examples.

A: Giant pile of uncontrollable soapy mile high pile of head atop a straight up orange beer. Three step pour process because of the massive foam. Head is rising about two inches, like a for over the glass.

S: Smell is awesome. Extremely flowery, but not overwhelmingly so. Not overwhelmingly anything.... Fermented mixed fruity berries including cherry, tantalizing citrus, and other warm summer aromas. Soft soapy bananas work their way through with creamy meringue but not necessarily of the lemon variety.

T: Taste, also very nice, brings many of the aromatic qualities with added bitterness and noticeable alcohol strength. Floral hops, brisk fruit, bready malts, spice and funky fruity Bret. Very enticing. A lighter version would be fantastic for outdoor summer drinking.

M: Semi-syrupy, slick, smooth and soft.

O: Great!
