Saison-Brett, based on our very popular Tank 7, is assertively dry hopped, then bottle conditioned with various yeasts, including Brettanomyces, a wild strain that imparts a distinctive earthy quality. Though this farmhouse ale was given three months of bottle age prior to release, further cellaring will continue to enhance the “Brett” character, if that's what you're after.

A big thanks to jtrockchalk for this one. I've tried this beer once before, but draft, not bottled, and am really excited to pop my own bottle of this midwest treasure.

A: Starts with a sharp pop of the cork. Poured a bright golden yellow color, and my glass is topped immediately with a ever expanding cloud-like head layer.
S: Sweet banana and citrus, nice "funk", and aromas similar to lemon grass. A very clean and distinct smell profile.
T: Wow! Great smooth farmhouse flavors with an unimaginably palatable complexity. Sweet and clean flavors and dry at the back end. Noticable lemon and earthy hay/dust.
M: Smooth and rich. Compared to other saisons, I find this one much more midline in the style. Deliciously clean body.
D: Outstanding beer. I would love to have a few of these to age over time and compare. Looks like I'll have to look for a few more.

Straight pour from a 25.4oz/750ml cork-and-cage bottle to an oversized wineglass (Jester King stemware); it looks like this was bottled on January 30, 2015, and the marking indicates it’ll be plenty good through January, 2017 (“BATCH NUMBER/BEST BY DATE: L013015-2 01-2017”). This was purchased two days ago and promptly went into the fridge, so it’s had a chance to rest at a cool temperature.

Appearance (4.75): Four solid fingers of tight, custard-colored foam rise off of the pour immediately, capping a cloudy golden-orange body. As the head recedes—slowly—it leaves fat splotches of foam and thick legs all around the glass, along with a good centimeter of lumpy, fluffy foam at the surface.

Smell (4.25): A mixture of light, sweet fruit and floral tones (d’anjou pear, white grapes, honeysuckle, and a little lavender), along with light, honeyed biscuits and fresh-cracked wheat flesh out the confluence of malt and yeasty esters. The brett is still pretty young, clearly, but it’s there, adding a little minerally, vinous character that plays well with the base beer’s structure.

Taste (4.25): . . . and while it’s still young, for sure, there’s definitely more brett on the palate than in the nose. The dry-hopping is also clear, here, with the pithy, citrusy, little bitter tang of orange zest, which melds nicely with the vinous, mineral tones supplied by the brett. There’s a mild, tangy, phenolic funk that floats behind the vinous and zesty flavors. Some malt structure props up the hops and yeast, offering floury biscuits, and more raw wheat kernels. A little warming alcohol creeps up toward the end, along with a moderately bitter, citrus zest flavor—which isn’t all that surprising, considering this is a saison clocking in at 8.5% ABV. The brett definitely lightens up the base beer, tamping down the strongly fruity esters of Tank 7 and turning them into drier floral and lightly funky tones. The brett’s young, but this is still a damn good saison.

Mouthfeel (4.5): The body comes in at a medium, velvety weight that immediately lightens up with an expansive, fluffy foaming action, which persists until it washes out. The hops and phenols, boosted by the alcohol, dry out the body significantly before the wash. In spite of its size and all of its different pieces, this is incredibly easy and satisfying to drink.

Overall (4.25): Right now, this is a lovely saison and a nice riff on the original beer—but the brett is clearly still pretty young and it has amazing potential. From here on out, though, the brett will transform the beer into something far different from the original Tank 7. When it’s young, you get a nice glimpse of both sides, and it presents a very nice balance of New and Old World renditions of the style without jumping the shark. Nicely done, Boulevard. (Yes, I’ll be buying more.)

It seems Brett is making a home in nearly every adventurous brewery in the US. Look back a decade ago and most brewers would not even think of letting this tasty little nasty near their tanks.

This beer must get daily calls from Brussels wanting its lace back, perhaps the best lacing and head retention we've seen from an American-brewed beer. Slightly hazy, pale yellow-orange color. Smells of apple skin, musty basement, wild herbs and animal feed grain. Heavenly smoothness from a light, fluffy body. Flavors range from lemongrass to apple cider, hop oil to medicinal herbs, cracker graininess to faint black pepper. Needless to say, very complex. Alcohol drops in with that black pepper spice and some pear-like fruitiness, yet shows little warmth from its size, just more of a clean breath of alcohol. Finishes bone dry with some tart remnants.

Brett & Boulevard, job well done. The massive complexities hide its strength, yet it stays dangerously quaffable.

I have had this bottled and on tap and it is better bottled. The cork releases with a pop which gets louder as the beer ages releasing herbal and spicy hop aromas mingling with cidery, yeasty fruit aromas with a little barnyard funk that gets more pronounced as the beer ages. It pours a lively, hazy straw with a fizzy quickly dissipating, fluffy head. In older versions the head is more pillowy and persistent. Bread and biscuit malt flavors support and mellow the tart, citrusy funky, earthy saison yeast flavors. Mid-palate reveals some peach. The palate finishes dry and tart with a moderate hop accent. The Brettanomyces really shows up with a very finely bubbled, soft, moussey texture that becomes more luscious and alluring as the beer ages.

2014 Release Poured into a tulip glass.

A- I had heard you should pour this beer slowly and I'm glad I did as, even with a slow pour, the glass was mostly foam. A high pillowy white 4 finger head that sticks around. The beer is a bright yellow, good degree of clarity on the initial pour.

S- Big brett presence, with that earthy funk, nice lemon and grassy notes, getting even some spice and maybe just a touch of banana.

T- Again lots of brett here, big basement cellar funk, maybe a slight taste of band-aid, lots of lemon notes, grassy hops, slight pepper, spice, and banana.

M- Medium, not over carbed feeling despite the appearance.

O- At first I found the brett aspect of this beer to be too much but as it warmed it the flavors really came together.

No. 1420 of 11950; Batch number 2008-1

Appearance: Pours a cloudy lemon color with a blizzard of a head that retains like packed powder with clumps of foam sticking the the sides of the tulip glass

Smell: Grapefruit perfume, with undertones of green apple, lilacs, pear and hay, but the Brett, at this stage of the game, is underwhelming (re-visiting this beer, in May of 2010, shows that the grapefruit has faded and the Brett is becoming more prominent)

Taste: Sweet and floral, up front, with a biscuity base and a developing green apple sourness that is complemented by grapefruit tartness; after the swallow, the tart and sour flavors combine in a complex interweaving, but the sweetness up front never really dissipates; leathery undertones throughout (the tasting 15 months later displays far less sweetness, but a lovely dry, tart character)

Mouthfeel: Medium body with high carbonation

Drinkability: A terrific Saison that will be interesting to follow as it ages and the Brett does its work; for my palate, it is drinking beautifully right now (as it is after some age, though in a very different way)

Picked up a 2014 caged and corked 750 ml bottle from the Alpine , CA Frontier Liquor Store in early September for $14.99. Best by 2-2016.

Beer poured golden with a huge saison yeast strain inspired head that is leaving lacing in a big way.

Nose is musty and funky, with lemon and apple.

Taste is lemon, apple, sweet tarts, with a funky dry finish.

Mouthfeel is light and wonderfully refreshing for a big brew.

Overall this is an excellent beer. I am not a sourhead by any stretch but I do enjoy brews with a kiss of brett. Glad I had a chance to try this!

Probably the best Saison I have ever had. Funky Brett, crisp apple and dry as hell. Similar to Rayon Vert but a bit brighter in the flavor profile. Simply a beautiful beer that I need to find more of to put away for a year or two. Highly recommended. Loving Boulevard right now.

Saisons are completely baffling to me. Hard for me to describe the flavor a and smells. Nonetheless, this is by far the best one that I have had.

Cider and pineapple flavors stick out, with a bready aftertaste.

Based on my experience with Saisons, I'm not sure if I am into the style, but this beer if definitely worth drinking.

Huge thanks to Mike for splitting this with me to break up some of the monotony of a mini-BCS tasting (hah!). Been on the "wants" list for a while now. Pours a heavily cloudy, almost completely opaque golden-yellow color with little bits of sediment raging about. The head is enormous - foamy, thick, and chunky, leaving fat patches of lacing huddled around the entire circumference of the glass.

I may have been ever so slightly inebriated at the time, but the first line in my notes for the aroma simply says, "...goddamn ridiculous amounts of Brett, funk, and barnyard..." and there really is no surprise there, given the name. Lots of soft bubblegum aromas, hay, wet wood; probably one of the funkiest things I've smelled. However, one of the beautiful things about this beer is that the Brett is still contempt in all of its power, and balanced by a nice inclusion of some light lemon and citrus zest and well as an earthy and grassy hop blanket. Spicy and funky, out of this world.

Much like the aroma, the taste is funkadelic as well. Plenty of barnyard and "horseblanket" flavors about, including lots of damp cellar, cork, and wood notes. Yeast resides in every corner with lots of clove and kitchen spices to it. Earthy, grassy, and herbal hops ride in and out on a wave of lightly toasted, bready malts. The hops seem to also carry a mild, white pepper flavor to them. Splashes of citrus peel and mildly tart lemon zest work the palate a bit, keeping things fresh. Awesome combination of fruity sweetness, earthy harshness, yeasty funkness, and and saison spiciness. The finish is ultra dry, as expected - medium bodied with ample carbonation.

Wow, I was expecting good things from this one and it certainly delivered. A funk-lover's wet dream in beer form. Despite the unadulterated amounts of funk, it never seems too harsh or too out of balance thanks to the numerous other flavor contributors. All-in-all, a very nicely crafted and well put together beer. Bravo.

Pale hazy orange color with a big ivory-colored head. Good retention, chunky lacings.

The aroma is clean and refreshing with notes of lemon peel, tangerines, wheat crackers, mild brett and well integrated hop notes.

The taste is very refreshing with a gentle sweetness and a mildly tart complement. A light malty backbone is coupled with lovely fruit notes of lemon and tangerine. Clean brett aromas and well integrated hop notes. The finish is dry with a light bitterness to it and tart citric notes. No sign of the alcohol.

Moderate body, effervescent character.

A lovely beer - refreshing and easy to drink but still lots of character.

Reviewed from notes on 7/4/10. Bottle number 5558 of 13400 produced. No bottling date that I could find. I picked this up in St. Louis in March and have been cellaring it since.

A: A big, pillowy head of 3 fingers results from a medium pour into my snifter. The color of this beer is a magnificent golden wheat. Truly a beautiful hue. The head is tightly packed and thick and takes its time to recede. Said head has a sparkly look to it and it leaves dots and c-shaped curves as the lacing pattern. The volatile carbonation bubbles are racing to get to the top of the glass.

S: An amazingly fresh blast of well-balanced malt, hops, and the Brett yeast is my first impression. Soft, nearly sweet clove and coriander smells blend with a healthy dose of earthy, grassy hops and the funky, wild, sour character of the the yeast. There is some pepperiness evident, as well. The resultant cohesive aroma is reminiscent of a freshly plucked Granny Smith apple.

T: Ooh, very nice. Following from the smell, the bland of components add up to produce a very satisfying beverage. At first sip, the spicy tartness (almost pepper-tart-cherry-like) attacks the sides of my palate, while the sweetness of the malts sits heavy on my tongue. The hops finish out the taste with an earthy drying of the palate, while the cascading spicy sweetness breaks over the dryness.

M: Exciting. When just opened and decently cold, the carbonation is aggressive and enticing, spreading the goodness of the beer to all buds on my palate. I would say this is medium bodied in general, but with a heavy tart and spice presence. The tartness of the Brett pushes this MF all the way to the right of the dial for me.

D: The more I drink good Saisons, the more I fall in love with them. If available to me regularly, I would certainly drink this a lot over time. The spicy, tart fruit, hop combo in this beer really floats my boat.

Bottle #6488 of 11,950 poured into a Duvel glass.

A-First pour was very clear straw with a Duvel-esque rocky white head.

S- Bretty band aid, aromatic, earthy and somewhat hoppy, pineapple, lemongrass.

T- Similar to the aroma; hay, funk, slight banana. Spicy and herbal with a dry finish.

M- Carbonation is a bit too high. As it opened up over about a half hour both the mouthfeel and the flavor improved.

D- Very delicious, alcohol hidden well.

20012 vintage sampled January 2014

Aroma- lemon, apricot, melon, hey, lightly phenolic, - all very pleasant and mild

Appearance- very pretty crystal clear deep gold with thick cap of rocky merangue head and sheets of lace. Would look awesome if not for the tons of floaters. Its like drinking a snow globe.

Taste- Frankly rather unpleasant. Dry and grainy phantom of what was once pils malt I'm sure. light notes of hey,citrus, and vanilla but man you really gotta get past the mouthfeel problems to notice. Not very bitter. Bone dry.

Mouthfeel- Hugely problematic. Medium-light bodied with palate-ripping astringency followed by searing alcohol heat. Effervescence not helping. When I try to hold this beer in my mouth to evaluate it, I feel like I am taking the Listorene challenge.

Overall- had big expectations of this beer but this is some angry angry brett. I have no idea why this needed to be an 8.5 percent beer but the alcohol is way over the top, solvent, and ruinous. Wouldn't even say it is sharp or acidic or really even very sour. It has none of the classic brett characters except a few notes I picked up in aroma. Undrinkable. I love Bouevard, Tank 7, and sour saisons but this is not good. Maybe I kept it too long, but it is vintage-dated and says "best by 2-2014". If others are having positive experiences with this beer than I suppose it is intended to be enjoyed fresh.

As the cage was being taken off the cork explodes out like a shotgun flying and bouncing off the ceiling while beer begins to go everywhere. Thanks to quick reaction time not much was lost but there was no real warning! Pours a hazy goldenrod with a billowing 4 fingers of foam. Carbonation city here and it needs to sit awhile to calm down. Aromas are super spicy and peppery with fresh farmhouse character and smooth malts. Hops are well placed with a great Brett kick in the nose. Citrus accents work in as well. Damn good aroma that completely entices.

First sip brings earthy, spicy crisp malts upfront with lemon zest accents. The brew gets peppery in the middle with lightly funky farmhouse and Brett yeast that are vibrant and tasty. Citrus melds in and the whole flavor sticks with you after each sip. This is a quality saison here and the addition of Brett kicks it up a notch while not becoming overpowering at any stage. Just an awesome brew here.

Lots of carbonation in the mouthfeel that could have been taken down a few notches. Otherwise it is smooth and warming. Really glad I had a chance to sample this one thanks to Dave and glad no one got hit by the cork :-)

An amazing beer!
I poured this into a teku glass. The beer was a gold color with a huge fluffy white head. There was a good deal of lace.

Nice citrus aroma. Some perfume. A lot of barnyard aroma.

Lemon, spice, and funky taste. They combined really well together, and made the taste outstanding.

A crisp, refreshing, thoroughly enjoyable beer. I should have bought more than one.

750 ml bottle - batch 2009-1 bottle 05590/11925. Pours a hazy deep dark yellow with a huge pillowy white head that retains well and laces the glass

The aroma is some sweet fruity malts, funky yeast and brett.

The flavor is some sweet fruitiness and a big yeasty funk with some subdued brett. As it warms more fruits and brett come out. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with tons of sharp carbonation that mellows as it sits.

Overall, a nice funky saison with good brett and sweet fruits to complement it. It definitely improves a lot as it warms.

Caged & corked bottle #6762 of 11950. Poured into the good ole' 20oz. wine glass from Walter-Mart (I'd break any nice beer goblet, but the cheap glasses will last forever).

A - pours cloudy yellow-orange. Giant fluffy off-white marshmallow creme head. Lots of carbonation rising through the glass early.

S - Fruity grapefruit rind and... yellow mustard? Must be either my ongoing battle with a sinus infection, or the brett. Or maybe both.

T - The brightness of the dry hopping is evident upfront. Passes into a giant wave of fruit & spice. Bit of banana, grapefruit, orange, strawberry, clove. Basically, if its a fruit, you'll taste it. The sour/tartness of the brett and pepper & phenols do a little dance in your mouth. The brett wins, but it really isn't overpowering, even as the beer warms and gets towards the end. Its a good, balanced funk. Lots and lots going on here, and all of it very tasty.

Had the regular Saison the other night, the brett version is a bit less peppery & dry. Fruitier hops, too. I suppose the aging and wild yeast must have toned that down a bit, or at least buried it in the fruit salad.

M - Sweet, sticky, tart, pungent, its all there. Lots of carbonation, really fluffs up the mouthfeel. Not as dry as you'd expect from a saison, but very nice.

D - Way, way high. Very complex, but just as easy to drink. Didn't even notice the alcohol until I finished the bottle & stood up. If you have access, or know someone who has access to this, it is a definite must-get. Should age really nicely, if you have the patience to wait to drink another.

Man, Blvd. is on a bit of a roll. The Smokestack beers were a bit of a revelation of their talents, and this beer is another step up. They should be proud of themselves... but not so proud that they don't keep putting out great beers like this one!

Sampled at the Power Plant Strong Ale Fest and many bottles there after. Hazy straw color with a white head. Lots of citrus and hay aromas, with subtle brett. Fruity. Lemony. The brett character is a perfect compliment for this style. Medium body with pleasant carbonation.

Available in several places in KC, seemed to be priced a few bucks more then the other Smokestack series offerings. Large bottle, caged and corked with batch and which bottle of the batch info. Pours cloudy and dull peach, the head initially is HUGE, overflowing if not poured with care. then turning to loose merainge, then thick film and leaving gobs of thick lace. Nice looking beer. The nose also is outstanding with pungent notes of lime, pepper, tropical fruits and Belgian style intrigue that even my challanged sniffer can fully appreciate. The good stuff continues onto the tongue, more lemon and lime, pepper, ripe fruit and also a moderate ssour note adding to the complexity and interest. Real nice stuff. Saison of the highest order. I Should have bought a few more bottles of this elixir. If you can get this on a regular basis, you have been blessed by the beer gods.

Pours a hazy straw colored body with a fluffy white head. Lots of clingy fairly tight bubbles.

Smells quite a bit of lemony, tropical fruit, wet hay and a touch of funk.
Some sweetness and yeast esters.

Tastes like a dry, lemony, funky, tropical fruity Belgian saison. A bit of typical metallic notes on the finish, not exactly a flaw but you get this in quite a few belgians styled beers.

Medium dry, highly carbonated and sprity feeling.

Overall this is a great beer. I feel this is made in the old part of the factory. The massive large factory section may have made the non-bretted saison and my take on that beer was that it is quite different in taste and overall flavors. This bretted version is very good. I recommend this to anyone into saisons in general.

Poured into a Boulevard tulip

Appearance: one inch head, high carbonation, bright gold in color, clear, sediment

Smell: earth, hay, and straw

Taste: earth, hay, straw. some tropical juice--maybe pineapple, and faint apple

Mouthfeel: light body, funky and slightly bitter, high carbonation

Overall: Another Smokestack winner, and maybe one of my favorites. Amazing complex saison that I will pick up again.

The beer pours a hazy orange color with large white head. The beer was a mini-gusher. The aroma is strong brett with some citrus. The flavor is yeast, brett, citrus hops and a medium hop bitterness. High carbonation and medium, soft mouthfeel. A very nice beer that is a great example of what brettanomyces tastes like in a beer.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Tulip. 2011 release.

Appearance: Hazy honey-gold with towering foamy head and some lacing.

Smell: Wet horse blanket Brett, lemon, orange, bread, clove and pepper.

Taste: Massive musty, funky Brett onslaught (and that's a good thing). The underlying Saison has nice citrus (lemon and orange), crackers & bread, clove, pepper and light banana.

Feel: High carbonation, very effervescent, medium-light body, bone dry finish.

Overall: This is a complex, fantastic creation, although I prefer the base Tank 7 Saison from Boulevard.

Pours a golden straw color with a big fluffy head. Nose is all brett with some wheaty, farmhouse and apple notes to it.

Taste is very sharp, brett is strong but it's really good. There saison/barnyard flavors really start to come through. Great mouthfeel and carbonation gives it a solid finish.
