Saison / Farmhouse Ale |  8.50% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
Saison-Brett, based on our very popular Tank 7, is assertively dry hopped, then bottle conditioned with various yeasts, including Brettanomyces, a wild strain that imparts a distinctive earthy quality. Though this farmhouse ale was given three months of bottle age prior to release, further cellaring will continue to enhance the “Brett” character, if that's what you're after.

750ml corked & caged bottle into a Corsendonk tulip. The first bottle of beer over 16oz I've legally purchased in the state of Alabama. Free the Hops!

A: Hazy lemon yellow in color, with huge white soapy head. Sticks around to a thin finger top, with very nice lacing down the glass. Beautiful beer with all the carbonation bubbles rolling up.

S: Funky all over. Lemon, pepper, yeasty, odd spices, a light bready sweetness. Not overly potent, but definitely complex.

T: Super spicey. Pepper, lemony zest, tangy orange peel, and a big burst of brett on the finish. Even some light fruitier notes throughout. Complexity here is deep, but it doesn't get sweet with honey like some efforts at the style.

M: Carbonated. Really refreshing and dry on the palette. The pepperiness of it really hits you in the gums and on the top of the mouth throughout.

D: It's a fantastic Saison above all else. This bottle is fresh, so the Brett isn't overpowering but more of a strong accent note on the finish. Really impressive. Boulevard's smokestack series is one of the most underrated and continuously impressive groups of brews in the country.

I left a 2012 a couple of years ago with my father, who returned it to me today. I had forgotten buying it, and it was such a treat to have a well-aged Saison Brett unexpectedly show up at my doorstep.

As others have commented, the head is huge. It takes patience to let it settle enough to indulge without getting a foam mustache. But that gives you time to take in the floral scent of this brew, which is surprisingly delicate.

Saison-Brett is a yeast-worshiping beer, to the extent that it reminded me of a hefeweissbier. But the alcohol comes through to sharpen its edges, and there's none of the unpleasant belch-provoking fizz of that German hangover remedy.

Though the flavor profile is different, what stands out is the artisanal quality of this brew, worthy of the greatest Belgian examples.

A: Giant pile of uncontrollable soapy mile high pile of head atop a straight up orange beer. Three step pour process because of the massive foam. Head is rising about two inches, like a for over the glass.

S: Smell is awesome. Extremely flowery, but not overwhelmingly so. Not overwhelmingly anything.... Fermented mixed fruity berries including cherry, tantalizing citrus, and other warm summer aromas. Soft soapy bananas work their way through with creamy meringue but not necessarily of the lemon variety.

T: Taste, also very nice, brings many of the aromatic qualities with added bitterness and noticeable alcohol strength. Floral hops, brisk fruit, bready malts, spice and funky fruity Bret. Very enticing. A lighter version would be fantastic for outdoor summer drinking.

M: Semi-syrupy, slick, smooth and soft.

O: Great!

From about a year earlier ('13 bottle)
Gargantuan white frothy head, slightly hazy golden body, ample carbonation.
Smells perfumy, barnyard funk is there, some herb/ basil, light spice. Very nice, refreshing scent and yet complex to the nose. I'm hoping this tastes as phenomenal as it now smells, as well as how I recall it tasting the first and only time I tried this a couple of years ago..
It certainly does. First sip recalls how flavorful this is, with the spice notes just right, hop very well-balanced in the mix. There's the unusual bubble-gum-like flavor (to some may be like apple) and finish that must be credited to the use of the brettanomyces. Bready malts, juicy, and then a drier end with some prickly feel upon the finish. Much going on here, and it's all right.
Creamy smooth mouth, medium carbonation, refreshing, complex. For me this is the best saison I've ever had. 5's across the board when I get this impression. Extra bottle to cellar a bit (not for much longer).
...Update: Just popped the other cellared '13. Still fantastic. Much of the same impressions, although a bit more prickly, spicy and dry-finishing than I recall upon having this when purchased like last time.
Still the best of the style I've tasted, although if aging I'd recommend no more than 6-8 months. I like this better "fresh."
