Notes/Commercial Description:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

The nose is overpoweringly figgy. Figs, dates, raisins, dark fruit, toffee, brown sugar, a hint of vanilla, an oaky undertone and did I mention figs? The taste is mad figgy too. Heavy dark fruit, figs, dates, brown sugar, toffee, oak, caramel, raisins, a hint of alcohol warmth, bready notes and a surprisingly light but substantial body and lively carbonation. This is a great Quad and the best of the Smokestack Series that I have had. I wish I would've gotten more than one. I'm sad now.

A: Really nice deep red color, beautiful creamy head which had great retention

S: Really Aromatic, a lot of sweet spices as you might expect, like clove and nutmeg. I also get a lot of banana and biscuits.

T: The spices and banana come through quite a bit along with some vanilla and just has a beautiful sweetness which you would expect from the style. A lot of complexity between the flavors. Nice warmth from the alcohol

M: I would say perfect carbonation, nice body and very smooth

O: Awesome beer. Highly recommend. First time trying this from Boulevard and I would definitely buy again. I am very impressed.

Poured into a Belgian ale glass from a beautiful Boulevard bottle.

A: Dark red and orange with a cloudy cider-like appearance. Beautiful dark golden head with lacing and a nice amount of carbonation. Very thick sediment in the bottom of the glass, so avoid a vigorous pour.

S: High ABV, big malt backbone. Lots of smokey character covering notes of cherry and molasses.

T: Massive malt character, rich spice, clove and cherry. Good hop kick on top. This beer had a very bold character and body, lots of deep flavors. Not much bitterness. Sweet caramel and brown sugar base. Hugely drinkable despite its rich flavor and 10.5% ABV.

M: Smooth but not silky with a good bit of CO2. Very crisp and clean, not hoppy and no detrimental after-effects or tastes.

O: A wonderful thick beer, chocked full of massive flavors and big character. Extremely malty, somewhat sweet with some interesting fruit characteristics. Big molasses, cherry and brown sugar flavors on top of its malt balance. Delicious and complex.

Sixth Glass pours a dark reddish color, with a nice large frothy lacing head. There is a sweet, wine like aroma. There is a rich taste, nice subtle dry fruit flavors, wine like flavors, and a nice warmth from the alcohol. Great body, and very good feel. Overall its a very solid and very tasty quad.

This is a really good beer! It has sharp teeth, so be wary of the bite - the ABV presents itself almost instantly. The taste is similar to many other quads but what makes this one unique is the taste of almond and overt caramel. The mouthfeel and the body are identical in many respects to other quads, but the level of smoothness that this particular one brings to the table is paralleled by few others. It's definitely worth a try. Kansas City has made big strides to match the monks' skills and pallet.
