Notes/Commercial Description:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Best before 07/13

Pours murky amber/orange with a light tan head that recedes quickly. Decent lacing.

Aroma consists of dates and raisins. Brown sugar and some spices as well. Cinnamon, clove, and vanilla mainly. Maybe subtle spicy hops. Very nice.

Sweet caramel malts. Lots of dark fruit and molasses. Hop bitterness is low. Lots of alcohol as well, slightly fusel. Though it finishes relatively dry for the style, the amount of alcohol detracts from the drinkability. This might have been stored at too hot of temperatures for too long after bottling. However, there's enough going on that it's still a solid beer.

Medium carbonation with a silky mouthfeel. Warm alcohol. Higher carbonation might be more to style, but I might also enjoy it a bit chewier.

Solid quad with some minor issues that may be related to storage rather than the brewing.

Like what? Trappist-style ales seem simplified to me, but the tangy yeasts and bready mouthfuls of flavor in this bronson are smooth despite the 10.5% alcohol. Really impressed with this number, even considering the enormous amount of decent trappist ales out there. Fantastic beer that I look to make a staple of my summer Tour de France viewing libation menu.
