Notes/Commercial Description:
”Do you know what dwells in a glass?” asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen's The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy amber with tall, creamy, long-lasting, off-white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of funky yeast, grassy hops, caramel malt and dark fruit. Body is full, creamy and crisp. Taste is of herbal hops, caramel malt, sherry, brown sugar and dark fruit. Complexity of flavor is increasing as beer warms up. Finish is long and dry. Outstanding brew.

Picked this up recently at Joe Canal's in Parsippany, excited that I could finally have a Boulevard beer without having to travel out to heartland. I was a bit skeptical as to whether they could brew a Quad that matched up to the benchmarks from across the pond and while this didn't quite match up to those, there's no shame in falling just a bit short to some of the best offerings in the world. I really enjoyed this to the point where I didn't mind having the alcohol knock me on my ass when I finally got through this!

The pour to this was outstanding - with a silently radiant light plum hue, voluminous head that didn't quit, and lacing that ranked nearly second-to none as it left a net around the side of my pint glass. The carbonation was a tsunami as it rose in wave after wave once I poured all of this out of the bottle and scrubbed my palate clean after each sip. Additionally, it lent itself to making this beer look like dark amber, as the bubbles were able to suspend themselves in the head that comprised the surface of this beer. Then came the taste - yeast, plum, fig, booze, candied sugar, and a bit of bubble gum that seamlessly coalesced together wonderfully. Dark this was not but it was a Quad through and through without the spice and gravitas that would characterize an Abbey. No matter - this got better and better as it warmed up while warming me up at the same time. A bit of medicinal band-aid flavors came out in the aftertaste as the sweetness subsided but the hops never really made themselves know, with the exception of a faint reminder in the back as a herbal, grassy bitterness quietly took hold once everything else faded into the background.

Don't be fooled - this was every bit as strong as a Quad should be and this beer made no bones about it. Coming up short in this category is like saying that you shot the moon and missed. This beer still made it to the stars and we're all the better for it . Boulevard should be commended for crafting this as I was nearly fooled into thinking this came from overseas and anyone who loves Belgian beers or something that elevates the American art of craft brewing owes it to him or herself to give this a go. It's strong in the sense that all the components to this beer fit in harmoniously together, with results worthy of it's world-class rating on here.
